Bought a brand new grand seiko as my first big watch then have since then only added vintage watches to my collection over the last few years. I’ve found collecting to be a much more enjoyable experience when buying vintage. Love that your channel focuses a lot more on vintage than other channels. Appreciate it guys!

I have to admit, by the title of this episode and by the initial setup I was getting ready to impart some choice words your way (I'm sorry, are you about to tell me that my personal collection, built upon my personal taste is WRONG?!) but you guys didn't let me down. Equipping yourself with knowledge and experience (by researching and by actually trying on the watches, if possible) is absolutely invaluable. It will save you a ton of headaches, money, and heartbreak. That's not to say that there aren't moments in all of our lives where we are just awe-struck by a timepiece that captures our hearts (and our savings) but as a whole, I couldn't agree with you more - we should give ourselves the joy of diving deep into our hobby and educating ourselves with info, and in the process figuring out what we like, what we don't like, and possibly even being surprised! It's actually what happened with me (short version) I wanted the JLC Reverso as a dress watch, but actually fell in love with the Cartier Tank Must - tried on both, and I'm currently looking at the Tank as I type this comment 😃 keep up the great work!

I bought my Cartier Santos as the dress watch in my collection. I can wear it on the bracelet and switch to the leather strap for dress events. However, I’ve found myself wearing it on the leather strap every day now.

Excellent video, insightful as always. I especially like the “have you considered” and “can you justify this choice” to yourself angle. I’ve a collection of 9 watches and growing. Mostly different brands, one mistake which I’ve since swapped out/upgraded as I’ve learnt and understood more. Funnily enough, I’m really close to going for a Reverso (Tribute duo-face blue/white with blue leather strap). I like and have a Cartier (Drive), but prefer the more intricate art-deco detail on the case, and more interesting dial (as well as variety on duo) of the Reverso. Love to see in future, a ‘have you considered’ video for different genres (dress, diver, chronograph etc) and hear your opinions on what some of the decision criteria could be for what resonates for different wrist sizes, skin tones (steel/rose gold/yellow gold), dress code/styling, occasions (statement piece, etc), and personality types etc etc.

Most important thing (for me personally), when talking about collecting is doing your research. It’s not just that you will be more confident about what you want and knowing what you will get if you buy a certain watch, it’s also just so much fun researching new watches, which you might not have on your radar, when you are just walking into a boutique!

Just wanted to mention that a great way to expand/improve a watch collection is watch straps. For example, I have a Reverso and love wearing it with The Quint, The Rover, and a JLC ostrich strap. Easily turns one watch into four (counting the black croc it comes with). Great content guys!

I love this video. When you guys talked about being realistic that totally speaks to me. When I started watch collecting I had 8 sport watches(alot of divers) with minimum 100m water resistance and 1 dress watch. I realize later that I really truly love dress watches as sartorially they work better for me. But in my head I kept fighting with the idea that I needed at least 100m water resistance in case I find myself in situation that would warrant sufficient water resistance. That idea inhibited me from wearing watches I truly love on an everyday basis. Which to me now sounds ridiculous. I had to except the fact that 99.9% of the time I am not in situation that would require a water resistant sports watch. For the times I am in said situation whether its swimming, fishing, camping or hiking I either don’t wear a watch or I wear my cheap microbrand Rolex Explorer Esque watch. Those situations are all planned anyways. Now I have 3 vintage dress watches, a 90’s two tone speedmaster and a Baltany Rolex Exploreresque watch and I use my dress watches everday. I also love the idea of a small collection like Christian said.

Everyone thinks we need to be James Bond. Go from suit at dinner to high speed chase that ends up with his car in the river. I am the same way, I enjoy dress watches more and feeling more dressed up, but I look at my watchbox and I have a lot of steel sports watches.

For watches, I’ve already planned which watches I would get for my milestones in the future. I’ve done research and compared them to other watches that are similar to them. Evaluated the reasons as why they’re my picks. Eventually, when I get them as long as my taste doesn’t change over time. I’d be happy with them.

I totally agree with the whole idea of trying out a dress watch. When I last purchased a watch I had my heart set on a fairly modern presenting dive watch. After doing some shopping around, however, I ended up purchasing a vaguely vintage inspired (but completely original) dress watch. I can wear it with anything! I swap out the straps all the time and feel just as comfortable wearing it out to a casual lunch with friends as I do wearing it in the boardroom.

In researching category when deciding the type of watch to get, taking the reverso example - probably good to, at a high level, think about why square vs round, time only vs more complications, narrow it down that way - then really ramp up research once you’ve eliminated other broad categories of dress watches and narrowed down your search

This was way more refreshing than the standard "dress, sport, daily" collection advice that you often hear, as if every collection has boxes it needs to check off to be successful. I think Christian's collecting style--focusing on a specific style that works for you and concentrating value in a small set of regularly-worn watches--is similar to how I want my collection to grow over time.

I think a lot of people are surprised by how much they like smaller watches when they try them on. The issue is that much of the time, those people don't try smaller sizes because for a long time the industry has told them that watches have to be 42mm or they're not worth buying... I picked up a "unisex" size tank recently, and I look forward to putting it on every time I get the opportunity. Thanks for the great tips, guys!
