I worked with her on the Grand National Tour of Hello Dolly in 1978. On every show I would chat with her briefly before pulling the cord on the little curtain at the top of the grand staircase that she would slowly descend to wild applause for her final rendition of "Hello Dolly". Great memories. Wonderful lady.

@@tonyspinnelli730 She was a total professional. I almost was fired when my assistant decided to drop a Quaalude and disappear into the bar between cues. He was supposed to have the "potato puffs" (tissues sprayed with iced tea and browned over light bulbs) ready for her dinner scene. We scrambled like crazy until we found them. She was adlibbing to kill the two minutes or so it took us to find them. The next day, as I met her behind the grand stairway I apologized and told her it would never happen again. "It better not. " she replied, cold as ice.

My late mother adored Carol Channing, and loved "Hello Dolly." My mom had some tough circumstances to overcome in her life. She was widowed very young and raised three children on her own. When she finally got us raised and began to reclaim her life, she adopted 'Hello Dolly" as her theme song. I can still hear mom singing this & adding a lot of dramatic flair. If there's a heaven, she's welcoming Carol today and they're surely singing a duet! RIP Carol. You were one in a million.

Carol's singing is so effective. It pierces through orchestra and chorus and you can understand every word she's singing. It's never going to be anyone's first choice as far as agility, clarity, accuracy, but that's not the point of her performing. She's creating life for the lyrics and setting them to the tune. I also love that she pays no mind to the tempo. Just when you think she's going to be late for the pickup, she's right there. She doesn't rush herself, but somehow comes back on time.

Growing up watching the Barbra Streisand film, I thought I understood Hello Dolly!, but I didn't actually understand Hello Dolly! until I saw it on Broadway for the first time with Donna Murphy. This is a show that seriously needs to be seen live with a top-notch production with brilliant acting, comedic timing, choreography, pacing, and direction. I think that was the magic of seeing Carol Channing live back in 1964 and in subsequent tours.
