Hank Williams, Sr. is country music. He had tremendous influence on country music. This song has a duel meaning. He was the son of the premier country singer of all time. and also a member of the country music family. And hid Father was a rebel himself. He was an alcoholic and died from a heart attack probably brought on by prescription medicine addiction. He was born with spinel bifida, which left him with lifetime back pain. He used pain meds and alcohol to deaden the pain. Hank’s recording career only lasted 6 years and he died in 1952 at the age of 29. But in that short time he had numerous # 1 hit songs, penned hundreds of songs which have been covered by nearly every artist that ever held a Mike, not just the country singers but those from every genre. Singers like Elvis, the Beatles, and Bob Dylan have covered his music. The Pulitzer Prize Committee awarded him a citation for his songwriting and his contributions in moving Country music into the main stream of the American music scene. Pretty high praise for a poor country boy from rural Alabama. Hank was so revered and loved by his peers and his fans that over 70 years after his death they are still doing tribute songs to him. The best Hank ,Sr song for you to start on would be I’M SO LONESOME I COULD CRY. Elvis who covered the song once remarked that it was the saddest song he ever heard. Listen to it first. The best tributes are MIDNIGHT IN MONTGOMERY by Alan Jackson, and THE RIDE by David Allen Coe. Hank, Jr was 3 years old when his father died. As he grew it became obvious that he had a great voice just like his father. Problem was everyone wanted him to be his father and he was made to sing just like him, which he could do to an eerie degree. But Hank wanted to do his own kind of style and so he rebelled, breaking the family tradition, And he joined the Outlaw Country movement which broke away from the Nashville way of doing things, again breaking the f tradition. He did a lot of alcohol and drugs. And in 1975 he released an album that established him as an artist in his own right, not just a copy of his father. That same year, he went mountain climbing and slipped and fell 500 feet down a mountainside. He sustained severe head and facial injuries and nearly died. Today he wears a beard and sunglasses to hide his scars. Hank Williams, Sr. has several grandchildren who are making a name for themselves, continuing the family tradition. Oh, and if you watched Monday Night Football a few years ago, you likely heard Hank, Jr. He did the theme song, ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL.? If you really want to continue on you country music journey, you need to check out Hank Williams, Sr and the rest of the family.

A lot of reactors I see who are just learning about country music mention - frequently - that there are a lot of good stories in the songs. You will discover this in your journey. Country music is about the pains, joys, and struggles of life for working class people. Even as far back as the 70s it dealt with serious subjects like alcoholism, abuse, divorce, poverty, etc. Sometimes it tempers the pain of a serious subject with humor, but not always. Some songs are happier and celebrate everyday life. One of those is "My Front Porch Looking In" where the artist (whose name is escaping me at the moment) says that the view from his front porch is beautiful, but not as beautiful as the view looking back in the house at his wife and kids. Another is "My Town" by Montgomery Gentry. Some songs are just fun. And some songs - fair warning - will tear your heart out and serve it back to you. Be prepared if you listen to "Don't Take the Girl", "Whiskey Lullaby" or "Concrete Angel". Bring tissues. You may be surprised at what you find. Loretta Lynn released a song in the 70s called "The Pill" which is about exactly what it sounds like. Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, Reba, Martina McBride, Miranda Lambert (I love "This Ain't My Mama's Broken Heart"). Golly, I could go on for pages... Oh, "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive" is one that means a lot to me because all four of my grandparents come from Eastern Kentucky. Country music typically has a strong emphasis on vocals and lyrics. They are usually easy to hear because the message is the point of the song in most cases. And if you are interested in virtuoso instrument playing, check out Roy Clark and Ricky Scaggs.

Thank you so much Katrina for taking the time to compose all that great info 🤌🏻 Out of it all, I’m dying to listen to The Pill as you mentioned. It’s crazy to me that a song with that title…about what I assume it’s about… was created in the country genre. I appreciate it! 😀

Hank,Sr died at the age of 29 from acute alcohol poisoning. He suffered from scoliosis and lordosis. Started using pain killers and liquor and paid the ultimate price for it. His influence on the music industry, in general, was huge. Country Music HOF, Blues HOF, R n R HOF. Yeah, he was just that good. He's quoted as saying that if it took more than 20 minutes to write a song, you should just toss it in the trash. His first #1 country release was written in the lobby of Floyd Rose's office. Rose told Hank that if he could write a decent song in 15 minutes, he'd sign him to a record deal. Mansion on The Hill is one of Hank's biggest selling songs. If you want to know more about the Hank, Sr legend, listen to The Ride by David Allen Coe or Midnight in Montgomery by Alan Jackson.

To really appreciate country music you need to be way out in the boonies, and I mean as far as possible, and sit around a bonfire drinking whiskey. Then it all becomes clear. I loved nothing more than being at our country place in far west Texas where I could do any damn thing I pleased and play my music as loud as I wanted to. I hope you are having a great day. If you want another from Hank Jr., you might want to try, "A Country Boy Can Survive." Hank Sr. was a real classic country singer/guitar player too, and he pretty much drank and drugged himself to an early grave. One of the Hank Sr. songs that was most famous was probably, "Your Cheatin' Heart." among many others. Hank Jr. was considered part of the outlaw brand of country singers, like Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson and a few others back in the 70's and 80's.

To add a little context, Hank Williams, Sr. had a condition known as spinal bifida which caused extreme pain his whole life. He had a spinal fusion operation in 1952 which was partially successful but caused more pain. He drank and used drugs to self medicate. Hank Jr. was out hunting in the Idaho mountains and fell down the side of a mountain something like 1200 feet sustaining massive injuries, especially to his head and face. He wears a beard to hide horrendous scars from the injuries and from the surgeries to repair them.
