Henry is my favorite SH protagonist *because* he is just some rando. He didn't choose the responsibility of being a parent, he didn't kill anyone, he isn't magic or special. He's just some dude who needs to survive through the powerlessness of being thrown into someone else's nightmare. Adding to that, there is some depth in Henry's behavior. Henry behaves like he has already suffered some long term abuse prior to moving into the apartment. The quiet way he accepts a horrible situation with very little protest, but still begs for help when there's people outside his door seems more like the way someone with cPTSD readily accepts and functions horrible situations with occasional bouts of desperation/panic bleeding over. He also is extremely motivated by the need to protect someone from a situation he has endured, which is also a common characteristic of survivors of abuse. There's more, but tl;dr is it's an intriguing layer to the main character that I'm glad we don't find out more in the game so players can speculate or read the character however they like. For example, Henry having depression is a valid read as well.
@HCsailingon
@HCsailingon 2 жыл бұрын
My first Silent Hill game. To me, the haunting spirits that render the apartment no longer safe in the late game is an ingenious design. It was both refreshing and painful to find out that going back home brings about as much horror and anxiety as heading outside, that nowhere in fact is safe. That psychological pressure was unspeakable to me as a teenager. This is comparable with the mechanism in the first games (and The Room) that the map changes when the world switches, and you can no longer trust what you know. That's one concept the franchise (these 4 games at least) implemented really well - giving the player a mechanism that comforts the mind, allowing enough time for the player to grow dependent on it, and then taking it away without notice. I remember SH2 did something very similar late game too when the game forces you to temporarily drop your entire inventory to entire a new area. I'd never felt that naked in a video game.

This game always reminds me of 1408. The short story by Stephen King adapted into a movie with John Cusack and Samuel L jackson in 2007. Evil room, cant leave, weird delusions/scenarios, and even multiple endings.

An interesting note. At the very beginning of the game (Henry's Dream sequence), you're actually seeing through the eyes of Joseph Schreiber, Room 302's previous occupant who met with same fate of being locked inside, as well being able to travel through the holes to the various otherworlds, just like Henry. This is who Jasper is referring to as "the nosey guy". The red diary pages received throughout the game also belonged to Schreiber. Clearly, he never escaped the room, possibly becoming another victim of Walter Sullivan. Or most likely killed by the ghost who comes through the apartment wall at the start of the game. You can tell you're not playing as Henry in the intro by examining some of the items in the apartment, the biggest tell being a portrait of the protagonist hanging in Henry's bedroom, whom Schreiber notes he doesn't recognise. Like Walter Sullivan, Joseph Schreiber also gets a mention in a previous Silent Hill game. He's the author of a magazine article about the Cult, which Heather finds in SH3.

Fantastic retrospective. The concept and story of SH4 is remarkable but sadly I never finished it because of how frustrating and frightening I found it in the second half, Walter and the ghosts chasing more-so than having to escort Eileen. I’d forgotten about the inventory becoming more restricted too - that annoyed me so much!

And much has been censored. When moving through the locations with Eileen, we got to a spiral staircase, which symbolized the darkest thoughts of Walter and Teamsilent initially wanted us to look at the plot from the other side in this way, but due to censorship, a lot of things were removed from there and you can only see empty bloody tables(

@@Torthrodhel There's a guy on KZbin, RODOLFO NUNEZ, and he's hacking Silent Hill game files. In SH 4 he was able to find various images referring to childbirth and related operations, which should have been on a spiral staircase. If this is combined with what is in the game on the stairs, I think it can be assumed that the developers wanted to show Walter's hatred for his parents and his own birth. And also that he became obsessed with the idea of "returning to the mother's womb." Therefore, when we find his crucified corpse, we can see that he tied his body with an umbilical cord that connects to the floor. And in the final battle, his corpse turns into something similar to a huge ugly fetus or embryo, from which umbilical cords stick out. Plus, the scene in St. Jerome's hospital, when Walter cut open the dead woman's stomach and penetrated inside with his hands, becomes a more understandable allusion to his perverse desire to return to the womb. It's a shame that all these crazy ideas in terms of symbolism were cut off and therefore some things about Walter are quite difficult to understand. (Sorry for bad English)
@Torthrodhel
@Torthrodhel 2 жыл бұрын
@@Woorhies and that's not even considering what never got developed because of those ideas getting cut off - that's just what got left in the game files! That's crazy. But some of the stuff that did make it into the game was mighty disturbing too, and I'm glad some of it did. It can be the smallest moments, too - like the implications of those messages Eileen reads in the forest. Or big stuff like Jasper burning or Richard frying. They clearly were in the mood to push the envelope. Wonder how much of what got held back was down to time constraints? I know Konami was keen to push it out the door, and it did feel a bit rushed in places (only having two bosses, for instance - there's even an unused boss theme for the twin victims monster). It would be a wild stab in the dark in terms of being able to trust someone with the project, but how awesome would a "full intent" version of this game be? Like were you ever looking down through the grating in apartment world and wandering if Walter would walk by and maybe even look up if you dared move? And that one silver bullet you can go back through virtually every level for just before the end of the game even though it's completely pointless to by that point... clearly there was meant to be something more special there than a silver bullet. Maybe a channelling stone from a cut joke ending? Who knows, right? The mind conjures such possibilities. :)

A thing i like about this game too is that there are a lot of things you just have to piece together yourself. Like, Henry's a bit of a reclusive guy, he likes taking photos and watching things behind a wall, a camera, he might even be somewhat sociopathic (Not in a murder type of way there are types) or just extremely socially anxious, the way he moves really gives the vibes of someone not used to or uncomfortable with people but the game never really tells you directly about Henry, cause he's the camera to witness the things for the ritual right. Its like, a really interesting story, and quite experimental, it, unlike the western games after it, doesn't try to make SH2 over and over again, what made SH2 and SH4 special, at least for me, is that they aren't like the game they came after, there is a connecting tissue there small as it is, but the story they're telling isn't just rhyming the same words the previous games did for the fans to go ''Oh this is like X I'll clap to it!'', SH it's at it's worse when it plays safe which is what the next games felt like to me. Great vid as always!

I think that was right after your Aunt Rhody had her surgery. Anyway, I was looking forward to going there because I had heard from Tom, you remember Tom, right? That guy from my old office that left the foil on his burrito and almost burnt the building down? Yeah, he recommended the place, and you know how much your mother loves pizza, so I was excited to see her excited. I think we ordered some kind of broccoli and chicken pizza. I don't remember what all it had on it, but there was broccoli and it was better than you might think. Are you eating enough veggies, Son? Your wordpress is one of the most profound viewing experiences I've ever had. As an artist who grew up during the age where online presence was customizable and now lives in this 250 character limit hellscape, I Genuinely appreciate being able to get such a self-directed look into your work and the story (and artist) behind it. Garfield is incredibly important to me, mostly because it is incredibly important to my best friend. I am so excited to show him your website because we both love the sort of intimate, borderline sacred feel of a personal website; the artists own world, on their terms, separate from the limits of anything or anyone else. And he'll love your art!! You are so talented and you have made your personality shine through your site, it gives someone no choice but to Like and root for you :] Like the other person said, Please never ever give up. Seriously, I'm getting emotional over this. Sorry if it's overwhelming to have a stranger basically look you in the eye and rant to you about a comment you made a year ago, but websites like yours reinvigorate my own love for art and touch my heart.

If there's one thing I remember about Silent Hill 4 (besides Eileen being equally annoying as Ashley from RE4) is the feeling of it being too long for no reason, probably due to how tedious it was to deal with the ghosts and like you said, the inventory system. (Something funny I recall though was that if you defeat one of the ''Patient'' enemies on a staircase, they would slowly make their way to the floor and playing their ''hit'' sound effect whenever they got a step down the staircase lol)

I loved the story of this game and how everything you experienced was from the twisted perspective of the antagonist. The tone of the game was something I haven't quite seen in many other horror games. It's largest downfall is just how tedious some of its gameplay is. Either way, it was one of my favorites in the series! Also, this has been an enjoyable series to watch! It's very fair and even in its discussion of the games!

Small correction: Henry doesn't get out of bed at the very, very beginning of the game; Joseph does. You're playing as Joseph Schreiber for that tiny bit. That's why if you go around examining stuff, he doesn't recognise most of the decorations nor who Henry is in the portrait hanging on the wall. It's also why it's already haunted.

Hey nerdy fact fans, the prison is based upon the designs of the panopticon from the writings of Jeremy Bentham. It was meant to be the worlds most utilitarian prison, allowing the fewest number of guards to monitor the largest number of prisoners. The observation holes were high up so prisoners couldn’t see whether they were being watched or not, which would mean they would behave better (it’s better to be good when you know you could be spied on at any time).

I don't know what you're talking about, man. If the game is too hard for you just play it on easy mode. Eileen can hobble along faster, so Henry can run a little bit. I don't think that takes away from the immersion or horror aspects at all. If anything, that adds to it. That's so you can't just run away from everything. And the dogs are set to attack you if you run, but not if you walk. That adds a bit of a stealth element to it. I think the only real problems with SH4 are there just weren't enough levels, or the existing levels weren't large enough. Repeating the levels is fine, but there should have been more to unlock in that case. Different areas of the same levels. Like Wish House for example. We should have been able to explore all the rooms with Jasper, until he gets into the one he shouldn't have been in. Then after it burns down, the lower levels should have revealed a downward spiraling staircase that leads to like an underground cave or bunker of sorts, which would lead to the Water Prison. That would established where Walter's concept of a downward staircase originated from, and it would show the connection between Wish House and the Water Prison. The inventory/storage system was fine. You just have to manage it properly. The only problem was holding more than one of the same type of item. If they had allowed us to group like items, then it would have been perfect. Like all handgun bullets occupy one space in the inventory. Or maybe three drinks or med kits to one space. Or five candles to one space. Or 10 medallions to one space. Also, disposing of broken weapons should have been an option. Also, granting a larger inventory when Eileen joins would have also been good. Another minor issue was the Yes/No option selection always starts out with "no" highlighted. Meaning it takes a left press then X to confirm "yes" to interact with items or read things. But overall, SH4 is a great game, and my favorite one of the series, although SH2 was the superior game.

This was the game where the franchise lost me, it was too different, it didnt have the charm of the previous games...still, considering what it came after, this is a classic!

Silent hill 4 to me was the last good Silent hill game sure it changed stuff from the last 3 but the atmosphere, the ghost encounters and the room itself made it a very unique experience imo it’s possibly my 2nd favorite Silent hill game only being beaten by 2

Silent Hill 4 is my personal favourite. It's not the best - I think SH2 takes that - but SH4 unsettles me. The idea of your sanctuary, your home, turning against you - is terrifying. Speaking as someone with mental health struggles, I rely on my flat - my Room.

I played this in High school and I was sooo lost. I didn't get far at all in it. But I felt like I was just meandering along blindly.

Oh gosh. My old gaming channel has a compilation of me getting frustrated at Eileen and yelling at her. She is so janky. She doesn't follow very well. Sometimes she gets stuck behind enemies and I have to go back and fetch her. It slows the second half of the game down so much.

I liked SH4 more than the previous. It was scarier to me. And the story unfolded in an odder uncanny way.

What’s with all the ads. I don’t really know how ads on a video work, I mean who put them on their( creator/KZbin) but in the first 20 mins I’ve had one every other minute or so.

Performances best? The dude that burned to death sounded like he recorded all his line in his bedroom at night while not trying to wake up his wife... Silently talking loudly, if that makes any sense.

Ahhh SH4...I didn't get very far into it, still to this day find the ghosts utterly terrifying lol The gameplay was frustrating too and it was almost too different was previous games for me. Then again, I felt the same way about SH3 too. 1 and 2 are classics for me, 3 felt unfinished and rushed and while I wasn't a fan of 4 when I played it, I find it the most fascinating and intriguing game in the series, both as a game and a story.

I'm one of the few who respects silent hill 1 and 2........but honestly my favorite games to play are 4 and 5. I just found both 1 and 2 had FAR too much "wondering in pitch black dark corridors" for my liking and felt the environments and visuals of the later games made the GAMEPLAY easier, to the point where I was able to finish both games.

I think that Walter, Henry, and Eileen are the same people. There is a lot to explain with that hypothesis. Whoever wrote this story had a very good understanding of psychology.

What I don't understand is if there is a hole on his wall why don't he ask the neighbour for help? I am sure the sound goes through? In the beginning he tried screaming at the door but nobody could hear him.

I love the concepts in SH4 but, the execution just doesn't live up to it. That being said; SH4 sticks with me more because of those concepts and the world it builds.

Of all the Team Silent games this one and SH1 most need a remake. 1 obviously because of the limitations of the PSX but this game's setup would be perfect for the modern horror genre. I would just change the last half of the game by having Eileen get kidnapped or vanish earlier. Maybe escort her for 2 levels after rescuing her from the hospital but she inevitably gets possessed and starts to distrust Henry. And when you do revisit the levels the map should radically change or open up since Walter is closer to his goal

I didn’t have any issues playing this game my first time, which may be while I love it. I felt like escorting Ashley in RE 4 was worse than escorting Eileen in SH 4. Honestly, when you get to the second half, you have to understand that you need to play the game differently, more slowly, but it’ll work out

This is the only game I've ever played that sends me into an anxiety ridden semi-psychosis. It seems that climbing through that hole really sets it off, coupled with the claustrophobic room; this game is a heavy wet blanket and it's only made more cumbersome by the fact you have to play each "level" twice. When I play SH (specifically SH2) I'm resolving some border-line schizo tendencies, SH4 however exacerbates it. I always wondered if anyone else experienced anything similar?
