I have been teaching myself German for five years. I have been using books, programs, and videos. I have learned a lot. I can communicate. Not well because I never got the basics down well. Since finding you my understanding has moved light years ahead. Your explanations are perfect! I'm an older learner so retention is a problem but you bring it home.

As a native portuguese speaker I used the verb "agradar" that in english means "to please" as a cognate to "gefallen" and the translations started to make way more sense 😄. Letting this comment here in case it helps anybody else. "Isso me agrada" "Das gefällt mir"

Perhaps a better analog in English for "gefallen" would be: "to suit". The sentence structure in English could match that in Deutsch if "to suit" is used. "Diese Musik gefaellt mir." could be translated as: "This music suits me.".

There's a line on Fassbinder's Berlin Alexanderplatz that confused me. Biberkopf says "Der Mann gefällt mir!". Shouldn't he have said "Ich mag der Mann" given your examples? He wasn't saying that he likes the guy's clothes or looks. Also, I don't understand when he says "what?". He doesn't say "Was?" or "Wie bitte?" he says something like "Watte?" I don't get it lol.

Don’t know the scene but both might be possible
@christianpipes2110Күн бұрын
The difference is that you use mögen for something close to your heart, dear to you, and gefallen for a first impression. Example: if someone asked you if you like pizza, you’d say „Ja, pizza ist mein Lieblingsessen“ since it‘s your favorite food, it’s dear to you, so you use mögen. With gefallen, let’s say you were out furniture shopping and saw a vase that you really liked, you’d say „oh, die hier (the vase) gefällt mir sehr“! Since it’s your first time seeing it, it’s made an impression, but not dear to you, you’d use gefallen. Get it?

Can you use "gern" also - for example in a restaurant - in response to "would you like something to drink?" "Ja gern ein kaffee bitte". Does that work?

It may not be terribly common, but if you see something or someone that just blows you away with beauty or artistic feel, etc....even if it's the first time you've seen it, would mögen work in that case? Like an instant emotion connection?
@yourgermanteacher3 күн бұрын
Possible yes. But probably not just because you look at her but more from her behavior in that moment.
@wingedhussar11172 күн бұрын
Many languages have the same distinction: Das gefällt mir. Ça me plaît. Esto me gusta. Questo mi piace. Podoba mi się. Eto mne nravitsja. We should not present that the verb "gefallen" only exists in German. English is probably the only European language that has no direct equivalent in which the thing that we like is the subject and the person the indirect object or dative.

Just study the sentence structure, verb conjugation, case functions, the inflection, and you’ll be good. I’ve been learning for almost a couple of years and many native speakers think I’m also a native speaker
@ΤΙΝΑΖΑΧКүн бұрын
Thank you for the advice. There are too many irregular verbs , similar verbs ( ausmachen , zumachen , aufmachen etc) with completely different meaning, verbs that split ....
@christianpipes2110Күн бұрын
I mean, you can tell when a verb is going to be split if you’re exposed to the language long enough lol. Like I pretty much know any new verb that I discover, and as far as them looking similar, you just have to memorize them. Are you exposed to the language enough outside of learning? Like do you Liste to any German music, watch German tv shows and movies, movies in English but with German subtitles, books, follow and interact with native speakers? All of the above for me. I actually had a slight head start before I started learning because I love Rammstein, and it’s a good idea to have at least one native speaker to talk to. I asked numerous Germans to help me not long after I started learning, and one was kind enough to do so, so without her, no way I’d’ve made such great progress. I chat with native speakers almost everyday.
