Till's expressive baritone and theatrical instincts always evoke for me the fiercely giddy excesses of 1920s Berlin. Chilling!

The location for this video was the Beelitz sanatorium near Berlin (built 1905-1907). This was a neurological clinic for tuberculosis patients in Eastern Germany, which was later used by the Russians as a military base. Today the large site and its buildings are empty and are often used as a filming location for TV and music productions! There were many sanitary facilities in the buildings, including clinical bathrooms that were used by patients. This explains the depression in the ground that can be seen in the video. Greetings from Hamburg!

I helieve that scary smile is how the sandman feels good to help the children go to sleep but he has to fend off all the demons and darkness. I feel a sadness when insee that smile like someone who will never be appreciated but still does his job. Makes me cry every time

Actually he is the evil version of the sandman (a german tale about a fairy bringing good dreams to children). He is bringing nightmares. But the real sad part is, that he is feeling all the pain the kids feel in their dreams. It hurts a lot, so his "heart burns"

"The Sandman" is also a short story of German writer Enst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann, which is one of the first examples to feature a robot in modern literature. Hoffmann's version of the story of the sandman is chilling and very effective, it has a lot of elements which the atmosphere of this music video and the song's lyrics evoke. At least in my mind there are a lot of connections between these materials, a lot of shared elements and allusions. Which are really scary on one hand. The figure of the sandman is definitely haunting, in this actual version also sad and tragic. Till Lindemann's smiles are soo creepy and well acted. Just a treasure.

I believe its supposed to be a play on childhood nightmares & the idea of a sandman coming & taking sleeping children, that very old kind of folklore, scary story time we've all grown up with, and this is his theatrical & musical take on that, is he the villain or the hero. The smile without it spreading through the eyes is amazingly expressionist...my fave part. Very heartfelt, touching song.

This song shows his voice, but there are other "ballads." Frühling in Paris, Ohne Dich, Diamant & Zeit are all really good choices! As for this song, it's about nightmares & children's stories in Germany, some say a specific children's program that caused nightmares. Brothers Grimm were German. Just look at their children's stories!!

Love your react! Thank you! At this point, Rammstein already has quite a few ballads, each of which is a marvel. However, I would like to point out that Till's poetry is one of the main instruments in a symphony called Rammstein. Therefore, I wish that people making reactions would at least read the translation of the text... Unfortunately, the video on the official channel is only posted with German subtitles. However, there are two excellent channels which put Rammstein songs with English subtitles: educatedmarine and Bucksttabu. I highly recommend an absolute masterpiece - Zeit (with English subtitles at educatedmarine - kzbin.info/www/bejne/jHe2dpyVpLGfqck ) Also with English subtitles from the same channel: Amour (unofficial fan clip kzbin.info/www/bejne/bInUhJl9nrifhM0) Feuer und Wasser (unofficial fan clip kzbin.info/www/bejne/bWnEhH2Ll52hqKM) Donaukinder (unofficial fan clip kzbin.info/www/bejne/p3ebiHmLep6gptU) Ohne Dich (official music video kzbin.info/www/bejne/e6fYan-hbtOZkNk) Seemann (official music video, one of the first videos of the band and one of the very first ballads kzbin.info/www/bejne/aYTOkJ6jl9J5pKs ) English subtitled video from Bucksttabu channel: Diamant (live version: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sHPNfoGebphonc0) Mutter (the live version, in my opinion, is much more dramatic than the official clip, and here it is: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f2OZn3eKps-Sf7c ) Greetings from Germany 😊

Did you notice it? At the very end as the lights are fading the white smoke? I believe the white smoke/mist you see in the very end as the lights slowly go off was his spirit/Soul. I think that he was finally able to ascend...after making sure all the children were safe and at the same time atoning for his past sins he was finally set free. The original was released in 2001 then the piano version in 2012 so it follows the story from Till in the orphanage to protecting the kids and the emotions he shows is mainly anger followed by sadness then in the piano version his emotions are kinda bitter sweet? He realizes he had to do things he didn't want to do to save the children. So now that he's done, he is finally set free. thats of course my own interpretation of the video/song❤️‍🔥🤗

A real ballad about love and loss would be "ohne dich". Just to let you know he has those as well. :D Edit: it's still intense though, but really beautiful.
@Balleehuuu
@Balleehuuu Жыл бұрын
Real ballad? I was under the impression that ballad just means a slow piece or a narrative poem which was transfered into music ... and in the 19th century a ballade was explicit a genre of piano pieces without other instruments written in a narrative (balletic style). This for me is really an outstanding example of a ballad... "Ohne Dich" is a ballad in the way it is slow and kind of narrative, hard and energetic as well in some parts. By the way "Ohne Dich" for me is not about love and loss like a common lovesong. Topic is the way how yourself or the inner part of you can be alone/ lonely in a relationship - yeah need its own space.
@ared-ainu
@ared-ainu Жыл бұрын
@@BalleehuuuI am a bit confused by your comment, because I think it came across to me in a way you probably didn't mean it. It kind of just seems like you are taking any minute detail of my phrasing and criticising it, but I don't think that's what you meant to do. Anyway, the phrase "ballad of love and loss" was a reference to what people associate with ballads, i.e. a tender ballad about love. I agree with what you said about the content of "ohne dich", it deals with a different aspect of love, and with the loneliness described in the song, loss. Which is what I love about Rammstein; that even when they sing about common topics, they find a way to approach it in a way that is not stereotypical. All the best to you!
@Balleehuuu
@Balleehuuu Жыл бұрын
@@ared-ainu I really was a little outraged by your implication, that "mein Herz brennt" is not a real ballad. But yeah it may come across a little pedantic ... but for me this is THE real ballad - like the ones I studied for my college degree in German literature.

Many of the things they do are rather rough, always give you something to think about and are never boring. Among their later videos "Zeit" is no doubt an audiovisual masterpiece and certainly less creepy, but therefore also less typical, because taking a closer look at the darker sides of humanity is a very typical Rammstein feature. I would recommend "Angst" because it is (i think) easy to understand and doesn't offer quite such a huge amount of possibilities for interpretation as most of their songs, also the way the colors (espacially red) are used in the video are relativaly clear. The performance (live or video) always is important, you should get versions with good captions or a good translation ready, if you intend to do more videos about Rammstein.

You noticed the German "Lied" influence ! You should look up the lyrics (I guess You understood some of it) then You see that the story is about the sandman that admits to the children he visits that he is the voice coming out of the pillow at night. The performance is much creepier when You understand the text at the same time. "The Sandman" by ETA Hoffmann (not a children story... ) was one of the most important stories of German Romanticism. As You know Your stuff (You mentioned the German Kunstlied from the Romantic era by Schubert and Schumann) You might notice that You surely met Hoffmann in Your music education several times. Probably not his compositions (though he was indeed also a composer) but as inspiring author for the opera Offenbach's "Tales of Hoffmann" and the ballet Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker and the Mouse King". But back to Schumann: He and Hoffmann were the first important music critics!

Oh, you will be scared. This is not a ballad. Frühling in Paris, Diamant, and Stirbt Nicht vor Mir are ballads. Yes you were. That was entertaining. If Till was The Joker Batman would poop himself. Oh BTW, the wounds are real. He made them himself, you can see the scars in later concerts.

@@YourOnlineSingingCoach yes. He is very much the classical "hurting poet" of German tradition. Which is a bit sad, for he seems like a good man who loves children and animals.

Hi, the problem is when you start with Sven Helbig's version, you can't understand the story that is told in the other video with the band....and the place where the action takes place hasn't no particular meaning. (Apart from the creepy aspect) In fact you have lost at least 50% of the artistic value of "Mein herz brennt"... That said, even losing 50%, the artistic value of the piano voice version remains a small masterpiece... and this proves that "Rammstein" is truly an immense artistic phenomenon!! nota bene: the understanding of the lyrics also brings enormously... and this is valid for all the songs of "Rammstein" because they are born storytellers...and their stories very often have a deep meaning

In my opinion both tell diffetent stories, so even tho in this one you dont see the background story you can focuss more on the lyrics and see it more like a tale of the sandmann (the german childrens programm to send them to bed with stories) but its about the part of the sandman that sends nightmares and not sweet dreams, thats why his heart is burning cause he causes suffering and is addicted to the tears of the kids (at least thats my interpretation)

@@MrHeiner96 Yes, I understand you... that said, this "T"-shaped pool is still a crucial element in this story !!!

@@MrHeiner96 wo ist denn die Sandmannverbindung ? Ich höre es nicht und ich habe auch Sandmann als Kind geschaut

@@huba3885 According to the countries and the legends, the sandman is either a positive character (he puts the children to sleep calmly) or a negative character (he comes to disturb the children in their sleep) this last interpretation is more valid for Germany...You know "rammstein" has the art of deceiving his little world ... so negative or not this sandman ... I would rather incline for the positive version, but that's just my interpretation!

I know I'm a little late to this game, but you might be interested to know that this song has a second, hidden meaning. Germany was divided for 40 years and a socialist regime under Russian control ruled in the East. People gradually fled to the West until the regime closed the borders and finally built a wall that was actually a military barrier. Everything Western was highly illegal. You could receive Western television, but it was forbidden to watch it. Care was taken to ensure that everyone was loyal to the government, people were spied on and monitored, potential threats were discovered and sometimes there was a car ride into the forest, a shot in the distance, and the threat was no longer there. The first sentence of the lyrics refers to: "Nun liebe Kinder, gebt fein acht, ich habe euch etwas mitgebracht (Now, dear children, pay close attention, I've brought you something)". It was the opening sentence of the "Sandmännchen (Sandman)", a western television program that helped children fall asleep with beautiful bedtime stories. Now imagine the following scene: You are a small child at school, having fun in class, everyone is laughing and making jokes and suddenly you say: "Nun liebe Kinder, gebt fein acht, ich habe euch etwas mitgebracht." You turn around. Everyone looks at you in horror, there is an oppressive silence. You realize you did something wrong, you feel a cold breath of air behind you and turn around. The teacher is standing in front of you and asks: "Where did you hear that?" A few hours later, you are sitting at the lunch table with your parents, the doorbell rings, the police storms in and takes your father away. This is now your childhood memory, and you have to live with it.
