I honestly don’t think most people associate gifted with sped, although they might be coming around. Teachers, parents, other children, society, etc. all view the two differently. It also doesn’t help that it’s literally called those two different things in school; sped is for people with disadvantages, gifted is for people with advantages. They obviously know they bother require alternative schooling, but the difference in perception is stark.
