Brother, this song is extremely hard to appropriately translate as it’s a traditional Griot song praising BIRIMA NGONE LATYR FALL, a “Damel” (a 19th century sovereign of a Senegalese Kingdom called CAYOR before colonization). Youssou sings Birima’s reputed generosity. 4:30 The chorus basically says “Birima, what a great host. Whoever spent the day with him, ate and drank to his soul content”). Beyond the chorus, the entire song simply retraces Birima’s legendary ancestors (Amary Ngone Sobel, Meissa Tenda Dior, Samba Laobe etc...) and reminds us how magnificent he and his family were. BIRIMA is the half brother of LAT DIOR NGONE LATYR DIOP, widely regarded as one of Senegal’s most fearless and greatest warrior. He was killed by the French army. If you google his name, there is plenty of info in English about that entire FALL-DIOP family, their kingdoms (Cayor/Baol) etc... Senegalese people are really fond of their pre-Islamic “ceddos” ancestors and LOVE griot songs reminding them of that era. It’s a HUGE part of our culture.

I found this online: BIRIMA He assumed the throne of Cajor And became well-known for his festive reign Where every occasion was reason for Celebration in great style Having inherited a rich oral tradition He encouraged local musicians And his patronage gave rise to the flourishing of The music known as mbaboor Ah! Birima! A day spent in your presence Was the picture of hospitality! This music was transmitted by the griots Who painted vivid portraits of the kingdom Mbaboor became inextricably linked To the history of Cajor Most importantly, it forged a new and enduring link Between royalty and the common people Where relations had been different before As the classes lived and struggled and Celebrated together Common experience allowed them to identify With one another Ah! Birima! A day spent in your presence Was the picture of hospitality

Brother, this song is extremely hard to appropriately translate as it’s a traditional Griot song praising BIRIMA NGONE LATYR FALL, a “Damel” (a 19th century sovereign of a Kingdom called Cayor before colonization). Think, Soundiata Keita sung by Salif Keita. Youssou sings Birima’s reputed generosity. The chorus basically says “Birima, what a great host. Whoever spent the day with him, ate and drank to his soul content”). Youssou also retraces his legendary genealogy (Amary Ngone Sobel, Meissa Tenda Dior, Samba Laobe etc...) and reminds us how magnificent Birima and his family were. BIRIMA is the half brother of LAT DIOR NGONE LATYR DIOP, widely regarded as Senegal’s most fearless and its greatest warrior. He was killed by the French army (the wicked bastards!!). If you google his name, there is plenty of info in English about that entire FALL-DIOP family, their kingdoms (Cayor/Baol) etc... Senegalese people are really fond of their pre-Islamic “ceddos” ancestors and LOVE griot songs and praises. It’s a HUGE part of our culture. This sh*t gets me all hyped up!! 😄 as I am a FALL and it’s about my ancestors.
