I’m a veteran and had to leave my son alone with my wife for months at a time and he always had my eyes. I’m glad I could make it back and have music like this to enjoy and get some perspective on other peoples lives and situations. I feel like this song is about parents who died from an accident or war and this is their last message to the children they loved and have to leave behind. Therefore a lot of children raised in a single parent home could relate. This song almost feels like a goodbye letter giving their loved ones hope.

A lot of people are taking the “more than a life lost in the war” bit rather literally, implying that the boy’s father may be dead, but I like to think it’s a reference to the “war on drugs” in the US. Maybe this family was poor and the dad starting using/selling drugs to get by, and eventually got caught and sent to prison for a long time. Thus leaving behind a low-income single mother who knows her son couldn’t make it in the ghetto, so she gives him up for adoption in hopes that he’ll at least have a better chance in life than his parents. :( God this song still haunts me emotionally years later... It’s so optimistic in tone but so very mournful under the surface.

@Rylee Barnes It is infact what they'll eat. Though, keep the centipedes away from them. I'm pretty sure it can impact their health. Certain spiders can't be consumed, many beetles are okay but still not any big beetles. (Small black beetles are okay) Moths? All of em can be consumed as far as I know. Mosquitoes are best not to be eaten. My cats kinda just paw at any bugs, but we rarely have bugs come in because we barrier spray every year. (Big jugs of multi-insect killer, spray it around windows, doors and any suspicious crevices) Edit: and yes. Weird cats are best cats.

My best friend and her brother lost both their parents unexpectedly. She takes care of her brother who has autism. Youth was based on "a devastating story" a woman told them about her son while they were on tour. They said she was cleary sad, but happy to reminisce and had a calm hopefulness. What I got from it was a mother that was heartbroken to be absent for her son's childhood when she gave him up for adoption. This woman might also be the lover left behind in Other Side of Paradise.
