It's not about 'demographics', it's about doing your job- it's color theory, and a badly formulated color won't be versatile. Why should I buy pigments from a company that doesn't seem to understand how pigments work?

I don’t understand why they’d formulate a blush with so much white to begin with. Even for fair skin tones (like myself), I feel like a weird white cast over your foundation is not what you want from a blush, even if it’s a nice shade. It just kind of feels like a cheap shortcut to get away with using less pigment.
@whelkpeopleofdoom2 ай бұрын
Right? Blush is supposed to mimic a flushing of the skin, and there's no white in the blood rushing to your face. Like what
@elizabethtangora43532 ай бұрын
I’m fair-medium and don’t like a super blushed look, so I tend to go for blushes that are actually low on pigment because they’re much easier for me to apply and blend. Still, like the lady said: with nine different colors you could pretty easily divide them into low, middle, and high levels of pigment for light, medium, and dark skin. Big missed opportunity.

These shades would sell in China tbh, most of their blush preferences appear to be lilac, light blue, light pink and white. They say its meant to make cheeks look “fuller” but it also means it pressures ladies to lighten their skin.
@notimportant1232 ай бұрын
I probably won't explain this very well, but the white base makes them show up brighter or more "true to color" on different skin tones. I am medium brown. If a blush is just pigmented peach, then imagine a transparent peach overlaid on brown; it looks coral/red. If it has a white base then it shows up as bright peach (I'm thinking Patrick Ta spring drop). It's almost like the white base cancels out the brown so then you get actual bright peach. THAT SAID, even if the white base serves a purpose for SOME, make other shades without the white.

Came to comment this exact sentiment: a tag for the artist is in itself a "benefit" in addition to payment, and as such it should be included in the contract if it is a deal-breaker. The influencers on the trip also had clauses in their contracts about things they were supposed to talk about or mention or touch on, so they most likely focused on those. She came across as naive at best, but more probably petty.

It feels empty. Art is too involved to just hand off and forget about, so it can hurt some when you know they got it but have no real response, no excitement, it’s just more packaged waste dumped on them and they’ll likely toss your art in a drawer and not think about it until they toss it.

Yes she is allowed to feel passionately for her art and want it to be seen, that is also true, but the way she framed it and how she posted it is extremely manipulative and calculative. A lot of brands convince (or try to convince) artists to charge less by claiming the "exposure" is a kind of payment. I wonder if the artist who painted the bottles under charged for her time/put more effort in than the payment warranted because she was expecting free advertising as a perk of the deal? A lot of seasoned artists know not to make that mistake and don't go "above and beyond" for free, but younger ones feel so much pressure to "get their name out there." (And the art world itself is very who-you-know so it's not an unfounded concern).
@lucyjane38032 ай бұрын
Yup its true. But I also wouldn't tar all influencers with the same brush - I did make the mistake of doing something for free for an influencer who never did any of the posts she claimed she would do - literally stole from me. Then I worked with another girl who did pay me, AND still tags me years later if she shows my work in a video (which I never expected or asked for). So there are def the good and the bad out there.

I don't think smaller brands with smaller budgets should be expected to cater to all skin tones, but they generally seem to be the ones putting in a lot of effort to be inclusive. Larger brands with tons of money have absolutely no excuse. If you can launch a foundation in 32 shades, you can make sure that a minimum of 10 of those shades run dark to deep. A (black) friend of mine makes fun of me (fair skinned) for buying Juvia's Place, but I love their product, their pigment load, and the fact that as a black owned brand they still include me. I hated when I worked in the industry (20 years ago) that just about the only foundations that would suit people of color were Estee Lauder and Fashion Fair. Shame on Youthforia.

On the blush issue, it's not exactly true that if they make the blushes dark skin friendly that they'll work for everyone too. I have desaturated light olive skin and I need a level of white base in my blush for the blush to not look neon and unwearable on me. I think blush, like bronzer, is just one of those things brands have to stop pretending the same shade can work on the lightest to deepest of skin tones. brands should offer something for everyone instead of pretending one thing can work for everyone.
@six23ist2 ай бұрын
I agree with you. Brands don't seem to take into account saturation. Why make fair shades of bronzer super-saturated (and thus orange) and then make deep shades of blush super-desaturated (and thus ashy)? I get the consumer not understanding the nuance, but an entire industry not knowing? Like, hire a consultant bruh dang
@folfelit2 ай бұрын
I’m an extremely fair olive, very grey-green toned. I can use high pigment blushes, so can you. You just pat them on the back of your hand and build coverage very slowly. If it’s too neon on you (they are on me too if I apply too much) you just need to control your application better. I legit only use deep-skin friendly blushes because the value is insane. If you have some disabilities that affect your application, fair enough - but don’t pretend poor application is on par with chalky, white-based blushes that deep skin can’t do ANYTHING to save. You just need to apply lighter coats, or pick colors that work for your skin. None of those non-brown blushes were mixed to be desaturated like you claim, they just had a white base to BRIGHTEN the color, not dull it.
@aluna12342 ай бұрын
@@folfelit op literally said brands need to stop pretending every shade will fit every skin tone and actually be more inclusive and you are talking down to them? Absolutely wild thing to do, you don't know what op's skin looks like, how these products look on their skin and how it reacts with their undertones, but because it works for you it must work for everyone right? Like op I can't use shades designed for dark skin because no matter how lightly I apply it it looks off and wrong on my skin because it wasn't formulated with my pigment and undertones in mind. Nothing wrong with that it just means I need to find products that actually cater to me and my needs instead of getting upset when something made for another skin tone doesn't work for me

Yes. I agree. I'm also a pale olive. Many make up brands are too pink or orange for me. I need a yellow or green undertone. Many bronzers look muddy on me.
@RebeccaGogovcev2 ай бұрын
@@aluna1234 I agree. Also, to the other person slagging them off, why should we need professional make-up artist skills to get a decent result? I do have some mobility problems, due to MS, but I also believe you should be able to get a fairly nice look without the need for 1000 products or needing to have completed a make-up artist course. I also think many shades can ve clownishly bright, muddy or orange on paler yellow and olive toned people.

With the artist issue, she should have ensured that part of her contract with the company was that they tag her and post something on social media. That was more on her than the influencers on this one, she was paid for a job, which she did. I know that sounds harsh but if you want social media content made for your business, then negotiate that as part of a contract.

Once I thought more about what I was buying and what industry I was contributing money to when I bought something, it became a lot easier to decide against spending my money just out of fleeting or superficial desires It can feel very empowering to feel like you have gained control over what you decide to spend money on, rather than me thinking "Oh Uniqlo has a sale, I need to look at everything they've got and find excuses to buy stuff!" And honestly basically all companies are trying to scam you to some extent these days. So being more conservative with your spending can feel like you are opting out of that whole process and it actually feels really nice ngl
