Not my usual content, but recently KZbinr @PewDiePie has taken it upon himself to start drawing. So I brought along @theodd1sout and @Domics while on tour to talk about the difficulties of learning art. This video has become a poster child for the counter argument against techbros saying "stop gate keeping art". Lets talk about it.

I usually actually feel discouraged by stuff like this (not as much as I used to, but I do sometimes). When I see someone get so good in such a short amount of time, it makes me realise how much longer I've been doing it, and I'm still not good. Makes me feel like I'll never actually get good. I need to try to change my way of looking at it, and instead realise that if I actually put the work and effort in, and practice drawing a specific thing consistently, i probably would make progress. A lot of the time I've spent drawing, I never really tried hard.

That's impostor syndrome. It's the only thing that holds you back. Felix has bad days and even scratched his decent art yet he kept at it everyday. Best thing to do if you have a bad art day is to sleep it off and attempt to do it in next day. Felix had a week slump of art and still do it everyday for at least 15 minutes to an hour. Like everyone said, just do it. Because any drawing that you make is a progress even if you didn't think so.

I just have to say, it's great seeing PewDiePie not just take up art, but document and broadcast his journey in learning it. It's a terrifying thing, both to start something new and to share those first shaky steps, and it's so tempting to just hide away your progress until you think it's "good enough" for others to see. But by sharing that process, he's reassuring people that this is how it works. You improve, you learn, you get better, but it's a gradual process. To quote Arin Hanson, "You think I cam out the pussy drawin' Mozart?" And to his credit, nobody, not Ross, not Arin, not PewDiePie, NOBODY came out the pussy drawin' Mozart. I'm going to dust off my tablet and give learning another shot.

I do think the ref/no ref thing is a hard thing to overcome, especially if you're like me and concerned about the "copying" stigma. I've recently picked up on redesigning one of my old characters; rather than making up facial expressions like I usually do, I referenced characters from movies and TV, those specifically that I felt most relatable to my character's personality. Though not 100% original, it was 100% better than what I've done in the past. It helped me understand what made an effective expression with less exaggeration.

It's nothing to be ashamed of. A lot of artists do expression studies and its a great way to build up your visual vocabulary. Nothing is original and copying aspects of other artists is a great way to learn how they approach fundamentals and it informs you of what you want to take from it.

Felix actually has some kind of knack for handiwork and is a very intelligent person. If you follow his vlogs, it's not unusual for him to pick up on things really really quick. It's kinda cool to see shaky lines becoming more certain and a level of comfort in doing girl faces and figuring out his style in such a short time. He's for sure speedrunning at least the initial stage of figuring things out. Of course there's an endless road ahead of him now. Male figures, creating outfits from the top of your head, perspective, nature, animals, the interaction of subjects, composition, etc. I hope that this does encourage a lot of people to get into art, but I hope it doesn't disencourage them if they don't see results on the same level as he did. Everyone's brain works different and takes a lot of different things. I picked up a liking for drawing in high school and I always felt worthless with it because all my artist friends drew better than me then (some probably still do). I didn't get really better at it without private tutoring because I couldn't find a way to teach myself alone even though internet tutorials were already a thing. I'm still well into my art journey, and I've been trying to do it daily this year after long periods of not doing much because of depression. I'm happy that my mind is finally at a place where I'm thinking more "wow, if I put some more work it will be great" rather than "It's absolutely hopeless and I should give up"

I gave up on art and I still regret it, but the art school was too much for me. I am autistic and need help getting started on some things, and well, a SCHOOL should at least teach you the basics. But no, my teachers assumed everyone in art school, at the age of 14 was already able to draw realistic drawings, with shading, light, etc, and would refuse to teach me at least how to DO the shadings since I never really understood how to. And I really regret not looking up some courses, or looking for someone to teach me, because I know once they explain me something I pick it up pretty quickly. I was able to draw a perfect realistic contour on the first week of school because one nice thing about autism is it makes me focus on details, but I lost credits for it because I wasn't able to shade the drawing... I really wish art teachers were more understanding and helpful, but instead they would just refuse to help, and then say "you have so much potential and don't put it to use"...

I can relate. It feels frustrating to see people improve quickly at art because you start asking "why can't I improve, is there something wrong with me?". Different ways of learning art apply to different people. I had to start the hard way with boxes because that would allow me to go further with proportions and eventually into anatomy. But that's not a bad thing. Being able to replicate anime drawings, understand them and color them appropriately is neat, but have I learned anything from just repetition? No. Doing just repetition until I realize everything without any structure never worked for me. For 10 years I tried to find a method that worked, and only recently it started to shape up for me: if I don't know the basics first, I can't just pop into anime drawings and learn by repeatedly recreating them. You can learn to draw anything if you find the right way to learn to draw that allows you to remember and retain your skill.

As an artist I think the one thing that really helped Felix’s art journey is proabbaly his ability to perceived the designed world around him- like you can tell how attentive he is to his references when he’s drawing with the pieces he’s creating- the details and lines all put there intentionally and not just bc the reference looked or had that certain detail. It rlly is so important as a visual artist to understand the world around u and understand how u can interpret that onto a canvas Artists will know that kinda skill comes with art itself- the more u draw from the world around u the more you become more attentive of it- but you can rlly see Felix had that skill even before- most likely bc he worked in a visual field

Really, most artists don't develop that skill very well. Many quit because they don't. Usually it's only the ones who end up being professionals, have real drive to improve, or have talent, who do.

As an artist, Pewdiepie's video is even more inspiring than most drawing tutorials by professional artist. It shows that anyone can improve and it shows the reality of hating what you draw but you just have to keep going.

I think this was exactly what I needed to get back into drawing. I haven't been doing art since I graduated college at the height of covid. Its been a real struggle for me to mentally justify (as if I needed to) any reason to continue something that wasn't making me money but WAS bringing me happiness and comfort. Knowing that someone like Felix is who far from a professional can improve that much over a short 3-ish month span tells me that I can do better too, if I just put in the time.

For years now I have stached all my scketchbooks from 2001 until now, I use my sketchbooks as journals. And with the years I learned to not scratch my doodles and just apreciated them. When I do classes I always say to the kids to not rip the drawings or scratch them, you can always learn from the failed doodles, you can learn from the mistakes no matter if you wanna be a pro or just for hobbie.

After many years of wanting to draw I have finally managed to get past some of my mental blocks, that things will not be perfect/like I want immediately and what works or not with me(for some reasons my brain hate doing the head's lines for the placement and some of the others stuffs that usually help), I have also recently created ocs and adopted characters so it really helped me to get motivated at drawing for them

His rapid improvement really shows off his skill in being self critical and seeing his work for what it is and how he can improve. Maybe a little TOO critical on occasion, lol, as he was brushing off some really good work. Probably just needs a more rounded understanding to see just how good some of those pieces were.

I'm always envious (maybe not the right word, but that's the best word I can think of right now) of people who are willing to try to draw even after failing, because I've tried to draw for projects despite disliking it since I was a kid and I get way too critical. Art just isn't my thing but I'd like to have the skill for d&d characters and stuff, but there are people that start out that way and end up loving it but I can't get that way because I just don't have the mental strength to fail over and over. For any artist or aspiring artist, you are probably the most mentally strong people I can think of.

I've never done this challenge before. I have tried Inktober where I'd try to draw the prompt every day, but eventually stopped at the ash drawing prompt. Congratulations Felix on doing this 100 day drawing challenge 👏 I started drawing in 2018 and stopped in 2021 because of burnout. I made 57 drawings in 3 years, and all of them have been made using MS paint.

This video was a type of serendipity encouragement for me at this interesting point of my life, and I greatly appreciate it. I'm in my 30s and started drawing a few weeks ago because I wanted to make emotes of characters for a game that had already EoS'd and will likely never see the light of day ever again. I have zero art experience or studies but have always been on the fence on drawing since I've been told my art is horrible. Even now, I question the quality of my art. But, seeing the progress in this video, the encouragement and advice from everyone, and the fact that this is also coming from RubberRoss who've I've been watching for years now was so encouraging and heartwarming that I feel like trying again. So, even though I know this video wasn't exactly directed at me, thank you.

First of all this is such a delight to see. Oftentimes throughout social media I see a lot of hate throughout the community and it’s really sad to see. This is a great example of the basics of art where it’s something you can access and enjoy, whether it’s for yourself or other people. I’m glad you guys had a fun time with it too, makes it all the more better! Secondly, I haven’t seen James a lot in real life videos so him having a mustache really took me a second to see if that’s the same James were talking about.

amazing to see the impact pewds' video has had on the community i've always been super critical and highly self aware of my creations that i just let them be kek, but it's interesting to see my theory on a creators curse/blessing come true (for those wondering whenever you create something you can see the rough parts even veteran creators see it case in point pewds and ross and other artists where people tell you it's amazing but you the creator do not like it the same with voice actors or actors hating to hear their own voices or see themselves act since they see their flaws more. for the blessing part is that you slowly unlock more of what you're doing for me i never knew why artists added the colors they used in their art but hearing that's for keeping track of your creation is interesting the same as a carpenter keeping track of what tools they use) anyways simply amazing work ps: ross hates the drawing kek (joking)

Talking about self-analysis, this is exactly why I found myself finally progressing in drawing. I started practicing once again, for like the tenth time in the last few years, in September, and I already made a large progress, and I couldn't achieve that for years. What changed is that I got invested in other hobbies like programming, translating, but mostly writing, and it helped me A LOT. I could spend hours in one sitting slowly making progress, but making a lot of analysis, browsing the internet, looking into a blank screen, and all that stuff. I focused on all these hobbies throughout my teenage years, slowly getting better at analysing, and so now, being 19 years old, I could finally grasp how to analyse my drawings and make progress

What I can say is, Pewdiepie definitely has artistic aptitude and is able to focus on many things at once if he knows where to look. And that, combined with years of gaming and training his fine motor skills, leads to his incredible improvement in such a short time. Unfortunately for me, I have to learn things the hard way, because I cannot focus on too many things at once, and my hands tend to be a bit shaky. But learning things the hard way, getting the fundamentals into my head before I get into anatomy, actually made me improve and understand things. And also, I tend to not realize certain things until they're pointed out to me, which was one of the core reasons I had issues learning how to draw.

I paint miniatures as my art outlet; as well as writing. I'm also someone on the line of aphantasia because I just can't visualize anything. I don't know what colours will look good together off the top of my head; hell I can't even say I know what the characters I write actually look like. As such; Ross has been a massive inspiration to help with approaching creative situations.

It's so funny to see what he thinks is worth skipping over is what you guys talked the most about. For me personally, I drew a lot in my teenage years, but I don't think I even hit the replication stage before I became more on and off with drawing. I drew a lot of stuff then but usually not stuff from shows/games/etc I liked from reference, usually just random doodles from my head that were probably just inspired by those things instead. I've thought of picking it back up again, but I find there's so many things I want to do and lack the same kind of consistent commitment that Felix has to do it 10 minutes (or more) a day.

When im fully lucid i dont understand what lines mean anymore. i drew a lot back in school but stopped because i hated everything back then, like teenagers do. A few years ago i tried drawing again but gave up, despite having some really good results, because i just couldn’t feel inspired. I still don’t have any inspiration and motivation to draw, but felix sort of gave me another boost to try getting back into it again. But this time i want to focus on traditional drawing, learning anatomy, perspective, gesture etc. Maybe getting down the basics properly will give me some time to learn what i actually want to draw. I‘m just drawing a lot of 3d cubes, boxes and zylinders at the moment, as well as everything else i see in my room. Just as few minutes per day.. Im on day 9, not sure if i‘ll stick with it this time, maybe art just isnt for me, but it‘s worth giving it a try, as i remember to have loved it as a kid.

I started really drawing when i was like in 5th grade and it was around then i realized I wanted to pursue making things. I tried, but dropped out of going to college for arts, went and got certified and kept going. Artist dont gatekeep, we want people to grow and get better, we want to see what people make. I think you said it well when you said the gatekeeping is only from yourself when you let your ego get in the way, but i also think its drive. Some want to, but never take action cause its to much work. Support human artists!
