Unfortunately Bollywood only feeds us the Uber-romantic 'soni kudi', 'mahiya ve', 'dil luteya' type of saccharinized version of that culture, that focuses only on romantic love. This would lead one to assume that all Punjabis do is woo girls and beat bad guys to a pulp, which I know for a fact is not true ( having been to Punjab). For once, it is refreshing to see the poetic, spiritual side of a wandering minstrel a la Baba Bulle Shah.

Almost been 10 years for this song and the film. This time 10 years ago I was finally speaking to girl of my dreams, whom I never told for 5 years before that I really loved her. Anyways, long story short, all the songs in this film ie. Saans, challa, heer they all contribute to mine and her love story. This song is based on a true story in Punjab (Punjabi forklore ). In which an old man was waiting for his son named challa who helped some people cross the river as he was a boatman, but never came back , no one knows what happened to him . Soon the old man gets tired of waiting and gets mentally ill , he asked people if they had seen him , he used to everyday go by the river and put his hand in the river hoping challa would come back , he used to laugh and cry recalling the memories of challa 😭 , soon the man left his home . (Watch challa by Khan Saab) Also he is saying jalla in the song which means mad , it's a reference to challa's father who went mad .
