Anyone who has been to a British red brick university will know how true all this is… especially the labelling of the food items… one person put colour dye in her milk to stop people stealing it..😂😂😂 British humour at its best .. but only understood by the Brits who went into higher education..🙂

I remember watching this when I was a kid in the 90s. Jennifer and her future husband Adrian Edmondson were on the same show in the '80s

It's one of the best episodes. If only Amazulu had sung their masterpiece, Too Good to be Forgotten, it would be perfect.

Jennifer Saunders also played another character in the episode Interesting. She was one of the party guests (Rhiannon?) sitting on the giant sandwich.

Here's a turnaround. In the other Coltrane episode, he's the giant being, drops a chocolate eclair on them. In this he's in a radio.

I see the Dutch word for "girls" is "meiden". Schoolmates used to laugh at me for referring to myself as a maiden; one silly split-arse said "We're not living in medieval times." Mike would correct her on that score.

although the dutch, or any subtitles ruin most of the jokes, the Dutch are mostly very skilled in English, and will get most of the jokes regardless.

I wonder how the wordplay translates into Dutch...see/sea etcetera...do they just ignore the joke and wonder why the audience is laughing?

@Bosdavid Жыл бұрын
Well, at least it brought another one when the pirate says 'that it should have come to this', it translates to 'dat ik zo diep zou zinken', which again (roughly) translates to 'that I could sink this deep", which is a Dutch saying. The 'aye aye sir' is translated to 'ogenblikkelijk meneer', which means immediately sir - ogen is Dutch for eyes (1 eye is 1 oog). The sea/see joke is turned into a completely different joke, being 'horen en zien is hem vergaan', which is a kind of a saying, meaning he was beaten so hard couldn't hear or see anymore. But no correlation to being on the water, as the Dutch word for sea -zee- does not give any possibility to turn into a joke in this context (for as far as I can oversee right now). ;)
@omikronweapon Жыл бұрын
I honestly doubt that many Dutch would rely solely on the subtitles. It's probably more about filling in the gaps. I know my dad never gets half of the more subtle jokes, but laughs at the absurdity or a sense of the situation being funny.
