@Living_Dead_Girrl2 жыл бұрын
It's not about the modern city of Jerusalem, it's about our beautiful home that once was. Our prayers and songs reference Israel (Yisrael) in a completely different context than a straight translation can communicate. Before we were called "Jews," we were referred to as the "people of the land of Israel" in the Torah, which is >4,000 yrs old in Roman calendar years (2022 = 5782 on Hebrew calendar). There's confusion amongst non-Jews because they don't just simply ask us what our own prayers mean, and for some odd reason, churches try to give their own answer before their congregants even inquire. Hebrew from the Torah is not the same Hebrew spoken in Israel today. It's ancient Hebrew, a language only used for prayer in Judaism, until the modern state of Israel created a new spoken language - something Hebrew was never meant for since it's holy & Jewish "law" (yet another problematic translation since there's no English equivalent to provide the accurate meaning of "law" in this context, since it's not legalistic nor does it imply punishment if not followed; like the English word does) states it should never be used outside of prayer. But live and let live, I guess. And this is where the problem starts: misinterpretation of "Yisrael" & "Yerushalum" (Jerusalem) in Jewish prayer and scripture, primarily by non-Jews & politicians as Nationalistic towards the modern state of Israel - when it's literally just the name of our ancient homeland, where Judaism originated; the first monotheistic religion. Thus, until massive Jewish diaspora from Israel existed, there was no name for our people. Just the people of Israel, and our God defined as the God of the people of Israel. Songs like this one, "Jerusalem City of Gold," speak of the lost homeland which was centered in Historic Jerusalem which has very different borders than modern Jerusalem... Plus modern-day Israel has "old Jerusalem" and just "Jerusalem" due to being forced to relocate this city because of annexations, land disputes, and treaties. Also, people throw the word "Israelite" around, which ain't our word. It's phonetically Greek and was historically used disparagingly, and arguably today still is. Everytime a religious Christian, for example, argues with me, telling me I'm an "Israelite" or a "Hebrew" (another derogatory dehumanizing term for "Jew" - Hebrew's a language not a people... Or a "race"), they're not asking - they're *telling* me that is what I am. That they know more about Jews & Judaism than me, an actual Jew, and refuse to respect us by calling us words we don't identify with and find offensive. I'm always happy to explain and very patient with non-Jews. I've had to learn about Christianity to live in American society, so I don't think it's asking too much to want non-Jews to go straight to the source to understand rather complex things like what our prayers translate to and mean. Even simple things about us and our religion & beliefs are horribly wrong on all the Wikipedia pages about us. That's a whole nother story - we're essentially locked out of editing our own pages, while Evangelical Christians rewrite them and literally quote Christian Bible scripture when citing "sources." Judaism is not a scriptural religion (and our book ain't the Old Testament, it's the Torah), so if anyone is quoting scripture with, idk, "41:34 Exodus" or whatever at the end (which is what I mean by "quoting scripture"), that person is not Jewish and if they're acting like an authority on Judaism, they don't know what they're talking about. It's crazy to me how many people think they've never met a Jewish person, when they've met dozens, they just didn't know it. We don't "look" a certain way, we look like everyone else. The more small and conservative the town, the less likely any Jewish family living there is going to tell anyone they're Jewish for their own safety. They'll just travel miles out of town to the nearest Synagogue and keep it to themselves. Plus we have the internet. So I don't buy the excuse "but I don't know any Jews to ask." Everybody knows Jews, at least outside East Asia, they just don't always know it.

@love Jesus Please refrain from proselytizing to Jews under our own prayer videos. It’s extremely disrespectful and an affront on our right to religious freedom without persecution or discrimination. You’re clearly very aware of this given you use your username to send your real “message” - knowing most Jewish channels keyword filter comments. יהוה is NOT “Yahweh” - its the acronym (Y.H.V.H.) for God’s real name, which is too holy to speak or write. Adding in some arbitrary vowels doesn’t make it God’s name. And even if anyone knew God’s name, speaking it is the very definition of using God’s name in vain. And stop with the nationalism. You don’t understand the context of our prayers or music.

English Translation: Jerusalem of Gold The mountain air is clear as wine And the scent of pines around Is carried on the breeze of twilight, With bells resounding. While the trees and stones softly slumber, The city is caught in a dream So solitary lies the city, And at its heart a wall. Oh, Jerusalem of gold, and of light and of bronze, I am the violin for all your songs. We came back to the water wells to the market place and the square. On the Temple Mount within the city, The shofar rings out loud. Within the caverns in the mountains A thousand suns glow, Again, we will go down to the Dead Sea road, That runs through Jericho. Oh, Jerusalem of gold, and of light and of bronze, I am the violin for all your songs. But as I sing to you, my city, And you with crowns adorn, I am the least of all your children, Of all the poets born. Your name scorches my lips, Like a seraph’s kiss, If I forget thee, golden city, Jerusalem of gold. Oh, Jerusalem of gold, and of light and of bronze, I am the violin for all your songs.
