Ys 1 Chronicles + Deserves Your Attention | Retrospective | Review |

The Ys series is one of the most criminally overlooked RPG series in gaming. It has its fans, sure, but it isn't even close to being as well known as similar series in the genre, such as Zelda.
Join me as I take a look at the first game in the Ys series. Well, a remake of the first game based on several ports and remakes since its release in 1987 (it's complicated, don't worry, I get into it).
I'll be honest I have no idea what that video is. Part gameplay, part review, part retrospective, it kinda turned into its own beast. But by the end of it hopefully, I'll have done a good job explaining why Ys 1 Chronicles + deserves your attention.

Started with this on the PSP and now playing Ys Origin and Nordics. Almost played all of mainline games now. really a great series! Great vid fellow Game Sack and HCG fan!

I played this years ago on Steam while a friend was watching over Discord. It was a fun experience, though I remember playing on Easy at the time. The game still kicked me hard in the tower, *especially* since I didn't make the connection with the silver equipment. I got weirdly addicted to the bump combat back then, as described in the video.

A 49 min video about Ys 1 in this day and age? Fantastic. The game is really impressive and I really love these games and find them to stand the test of time even today. I recently started playing Ys games and I find all of these games to be must-play for everyone that enjoys jrpgs arpgs or a most gamers for that matter. These games are jrpgs made with arcade styled game sensibilities and that’s something you’ll rarely see anywhere else. My first experience with the game was very similar to yours. Btw judging by your footage both from the centipede boss and dark fact I’m going to go on a limb and say that you played the steam version. Your game is running above 60hz which makes those 2 bosses a pain in the ass. You can set the refresh rate with something like rovio tuner or from your gpu settings for this game in particular. I had the exact same issue. Loved this video, subbed.

Got the Ys 1 + 2 game on the Wii's Virtual Console back in 2007 or 2008. I also got it physically on the PSP. So I already know how awesome this series first started and why it was so important on Japanese PC games.

Yes it was a pack in with the Turbo duo, alongside Bonk 1-2 and Bomberman (hidden) Easily the best packins of any system ever.

Do you have proof of this? Not saying I don't belive you, I totally do, but I'm thinking about making a supercut video in the future combining this video and the one I'm making for Ys 2, and I'd love to be able to make corrections for things I got wrong in this one. So if you can point me to something like a photo of the box with the pack in or something like that it'd be a huge help as I wasn't able to find anything like this when I made this one. If not, no worries, your confirmation is enough for me to make an edit as is, so thank you.

@@TheGameCupboard There may have been multiple pack ins, and I'll do my best to verify my memories (or at least provide a link showing there was a 3+1 disc which had Bonk 1 + 2 + gate of thunder with a bonus Bomberman of some year.) While I search for a page with pictures, the wikipedia entry for the Duo, for the North America section, you can find cursory information for the disc and its contents. Edit: And old memory I am sorta proud of from back in the day about the disc... I recall finding the details on segasages* about the hidden bomberman game, and telling my friend about it. He later told me that it was a good thing, because his parents turned out to love Bomberman, and would let him use the upstairs television to play (and for themselves to play) *Possibly gamesages

Finally watched this video. Worth the wait. The Anime mixes things up in comparison but all the key elements are there. When can we expect the 'Ys II Chronicles+' video?

I remember swapping my PS1 for my buddy's Turbo Duo to get my fill of Books 1 and 2. When I returned to Ys later on, it was Oath in Felghana, one of the Ys 3 games, but redone (I've since played the SNES Ys 3, and not knowing that it was the basis of Oath, I felt simultaneously disappointed and elated learning the fact.) Since then I've gone through Origins with one character, and need to get back to finishing with the other, and I need to get back to my playthrough of pt. 8.

Oath is probably the hardest Ys game I've played. Origins is worth going back to. I hope this isn't a spoiler, but there's actually a third character that unlocks after you finish with the first two, and that's the Canon story, and it's absolutely fantastic

I just started playing the Steam version of Ys I yesterday, after having been aware of and interested in this series for over two decades. It had always been in the back of my mind to try it, but for whatever reason it continually kept getting pushed back by the many other games and series I missed in the late 80s and early 90s due to not having the systems or the money to buy them, or because they weren't translated into English. Over the weekend I bought Ys I & II Chronicles and Origins, and on a side not Romancing SaGa 2 and 3. Curiously enough, SaGa as a series was my introduction to JRPGs, having played Final Fantasy Legends on the original Gameboy back in the day, but because the three Super Famicom Romancing games weren't brought out in the West I missed them and continued with SaGa Frontier without even realizing at the time it was part of the same series! Anyway I'm very much looking forward to exploring the Ys series, I only put about 2 hours into the first one and mostly was just exploring each area thoroughly, making sure to exhaust the NPCs dialogues, practicing the combat, etc. Thank you for your video!

Great video. I tried /some/ Ys game that limited run games put out like 7 years ago or so and for whatever reason, I couldn't get into it. Either I've changed, or this Ys series sounds better than it actually is (doubtful), so I might need to revisit the series. There was a Sega Saturn version of the game on a compilation of early games from Falcom. A version of Ys II is also available on another compilation. Also, Ys Eternal (but not Ys II Eternal), has worse graphics than the revised Complete (and Chronicles) version.
