Ooohhh... I see what the composer is doing finally... The melody and the bassline either starts early or hangs over when he transitions to a new section, creating this syncopation that gives the music an intense quality that feels like it never stops for a breath, and just keeps going... Except when it does stop, where he punctuates either with a big chord/lead on the new part, and a drum break on the old, which comes off like a sudden kick to the head. Wataru Ishibashi really seems to have a great handle of how to create a sense of overwhelming speed in music.
@holonholon1141
@holonholon1141 Жыл бұрын
It feels like he's building a lot on Mieko Ishikawa's style because she absolutely loved the syncopated in-key jumps with extremely rapid and chaotic chromatic sweeps, but his own personal touch is the use of seconds and even microtonality in some instances. The use of wolf tones in Hidden True Form from Sora is probably the song that got me most interested in his personal catalogue. Absolutely heartbreaking we lost him, he was a real innovator in pushing VGM both compositionally and in mastery of bringing emotions out of it.

This is a top 2 or 3 ys boss theme for me. It's full of energy and hype you to fight the boss throughout the entire fight. I think I'd rank 8 at number 1 for sheer variety of good themes, then put this one at or above origin as my favorite boss theme.

Honestly, do it. I suggest you to start with Ys I & II since they are a little outdated (they use the first game mechanic of the series : the bump system), then oath in felghana (or YS IV), then this one , then origins (prequel), then ys seven, then memories of celceta (YS III, but it's a remaster so the gameplay is up to date) then YS VIII and YS IX for the final... I didn't forgot YS V but you'll have to... find it yourself, probably with a translation patch

Absolute classic. Personally I've never been much of a fan of this arrangement (The 35th Anniversary arrangement is INSANE though) but still definitely one of the most iconic tracks of the series.

Beginning guitar riff sounds like the Saban power ranger's theme. Also the synth part sounds egyptian

I'm pretty sure the part with the synth riff (and most of this tune for that matter) is in the Double harmonic scale, which is why it sounds so middle eastern.

@Bramhallthefifth

@@SpeedySPCFan the song is in the key of E minor and makes use of the harmonic minor scale in parts. The synth riff plays over a B chord, the fifth of the key, and the fifth mode of harmonic minor is Phrygian dominant which is very close to double harmonic (i recall that double harmonic is phrygian dominant with a raised seventh)

I hated that rock monster in the water cave. Its hands have "Retro Kirby" syndrome, where they can still hurt you even when disabled... why?! It was kind of strange how the boss would spawn a shadowy Adol under certain circumstances, does any other one have something like that?

This is a good example of how low dynamic range can make a great song worse. The dynamic range value here is just _three_, when ideally it should be around six at the lowest. I don't think any other non-Singa track has got that low in Falcom's history, but correct me if I'm wrong.
