Ys VIII Lacrimosa of Dana Review | Nintendo Switch And PC

Ys VIII is out on the Nintendo Switch on June 26th and is currently available on the PC. Today Evan is taking a look at both versions and giving his review on the game itself as well as a look at each version and how they run.

Dunno who this dude is (quite new to this channel and I don't often check reviews either), but I have to say, great video and explanation. The editing was on point, the scenes showed covered all kinds of things, like how the maps look, how the talking looks, how the characters move, and how the fighting looks. And the times with just the camera with the borders of blurred game up and down were nicely done too. Also the explanation was great, told me everything I wanted to know about the game being a newbie to these series (only learned of it like a year or two ago and still haven't played any), including whether there's any connection to previous titles and if it was needed to play the previous ones (I'm a sucker for connections and references so I must always play the games in order of release or else I'll always think I'm missing something and won't enjoy it as much). Overall, great editing, great script, great video. Thanks!

The presentation for these reviews, Evan, is spectacular. Never played any of the Ys games, but I have heard of them starting back in the PS1 days. Seeing how much publicity this entry in the series is getting, I'm becoming very inclined to hop in.

You definitely should. Start with Ys Origin, then move on with the rest in order. Ys 1 & 2, Ys Oath in Felghana, etc.

This game was advertised last year. Was really feeling what was there so purchased on PC.... then had to cancel my order on release day due to the game being delayed indefinitely... fortunately I have a PS4 so I picked it up there.... not the platform I wanted to own it on but hey it was available. Very satisfying game! Would recommend it to anyone.

July for Australia is totally just a JRPG mega month! We have Ys VIII, Octopath Travelers and Shining Resonance Refrain Dropping all within ONE WEEK of each other. Sadly I'll have no social life for a while with these games coming out.

It's great to have this game, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Tales of Vesperia, Breath of the Wild, Skyrim, and Octopath Travelers all on Switch. Now if only Square Enix would hurry up with Dragon Quest XI.

Great review! One thing I think would interesting to see would be to compare how this on Switch and Vita runs compared to Memories of Celceta, if such a thing could accurately be done. I didn't mention in my own review, but I'm fairly certain these games are running on the same engine, so I think that'd be interesting to see!

My only experience with YS games is wanderers from YS III on the SNES. I played that game a lot when I was young. I look forward to returning to this series when this comes out.

Ark of Napishtim was the first Ys game I ever played back when it came out for the PS2 and I fell in love it with. I wasn't able to play another Ys game until VIII released on the PS4 and I was not disappointed. It's always one of my first go to recommendations to customers coming in looking for a good story based game or a JRPG and more often than not their willing to give it a try when we have it in.

Decided to hold off on the Vita version so looking forward to this on the NS as I've really enjoyed the previous Ys games on PSP/PS Vita. Shame as there's not that many games like this on the Switch as well, JRPG with action combat; why I never got Xenoblades 2.

Honestly I like the colours of the Switch version better, the PC Version looks a bit washed out whereas the Switch version looks really bright and colourful which I personally prefer. Definitely gonna consider picking this up when I can, it looks awesome! Great review :)

Why not y's? :D Great review Evan. I wasn't sure about this one. I prefer more turn-based fighting. Although I have tried the Shining Resonance Refrain demo and the combat looks identical and I did slowly warm to that style so I may look at this after all.

Caldermonkey it could have just been the review copies didn't have language options. Sometimes content is cut or altered for review copies of a game **cough** **cough** Star Wars Battlefront 2 having the in game progression be 4x faster in review copies than the day one version **cough** **cough**

I think the visuals in the game are perfect. Simple but occasionally impressive. The only thing that looked bad was some of the water. PC version at 60fps was a beaut.

I've been trying to get into the Ys series (starting with Ys: Origin). I've got Origin, 1, 2, and 3 on Steam. However, I'm not sure how to get a good copy of Ys 4. The problem is that there were two "original" versions done by different companies back in the day, and they have different stories. When the updated (definitive?) version was released, it was exclusive the the PS Vita (last I checked), so I have no way to play it. I haven't looked for more accessible versions in a couple of years. Has the situation changed?
