I've read the comments... seems like some have their heads up their asteroids. I've found a lot of value in this lesson...a few gems I am gonna try to give time to. 😊

Guthrie govan is one who actually knows how, why and when to play a note. He's a good teacher, I enjoy watching him all the time. 😊

What he teaches are some tools. Whether you would like to sound different is entirely up to you.

This lesson was first posted years ago. When I watched it back then I was impressed. Guthrie is a seasoned guitar player who is very knowledgeable on technique and speaks eruditely on things others can only be ambiguous about. That being said, I couldn't make it through the lesson this time. He speaks of musicality like he knows something about it but his blues licks lack emotion. They're well formed but hardly expressive. There's no pain or agony in it like there ahould be when you play the blues. Normally, I wouldn't say anything but it's ironic when he criticizes certain playing when he is subject to the exact same aberrations. People won't notice that, but I did, and I think it's important to point that out. In conclusion I become less impressed with Guthrie as time goes by. He often lacks soul and largely I find his playing unmoving. In addition, I can't look past the hypocritical pontificating. He's off my radar from here on out.

Hard agree. I used to dig him too, but as time went on (and I got older), I realized his playing is largely flash and blaze, with no romance or soul. Yeah he knows a few more modes than the average shreddy noodler, but it really comes off as vanilla blandness. I feel like he's even bored of his own Weather Channel- inspired chops. Give me Albert King or Gary moore any day of the week over GG.

I think he is only showing the licks as an example of what you can do in the video. But for example in this album i think he is more expressive and has more soul in his playing than others of his works music.kzbin.info/aero/OLAK5uy_lyFIk1AP9kOVIVM4VPtzKj8AlG2jZZNuE&si=9ZtfGo4s-KtzD9Gb

This is a lesson. He didn’t say anything wrong in his lesson. You expect him to teach you “pain and emotion” too? He obviously knows his stuff.

The emotion of a song is in its progression and harmony, not single-line licks. And its not something that real players will try to emulate outside of a setting of which it is a natural part. You act like you can just pick up a guitar and immediately delve into the depths of your soul with a single lick but that is a place that you need to build to, with great intention, which is obviously not his goal here. There is a time for passion and a time for technical instruction, and anyway, the former can't be taught, so why would it be a part of a lesson?

Came for some guitar inspiration, left after being bored by his pompous attitude. To call a classic bluesy lick “vaguely musical” is rich. Hate to break it to ya buddy, but that vaguely musical stuff has sold about a billion more records than anything you’ve produced. Keep huffing on your own farts bro 😂

Weird that you infer that from someone providing free information. Where’s this “pompous attitude” you’re talking about? I think you just hate that you probably suck at guitar and this lesson is causing you rage.

He was making a point. 5 seconds later he showed an example of something he considers not-at-all musical.
