Wow, it's rare for one of these capers to have an entirely nonviolent resolution...if not for the scuffle between Murphy and Gillis, there would have been no violence at all. I'm actually a little moved by the happy ending. A bit odd to think that talking dogs do actually exist in this universe... I was expecting we'd find out that she had some kind of then-revolutionary miniature gadget hidden in her fur, which played a taped recording of the daughter saying the slogan whenever the dog's throat moved to indicate she'd just been barking. I feel like a device of such sort, though ridiculously expensive, would not have been impossible for a master electrician to invent back then.

Well if the canine is female, her owner is lucky Johnny called her a dog, instead of the accurate term.

Several modern theorists, both humorous and serious, have speculated that the same social forces that made yesterday's racism unacceptable today will gradually make today's pet ownership unacceptable tomorrow. This script provides an illustrative example, since at the time this show came out, it was still not uncommon for "polite" society (including agencies such as Planned Parenthood) to speak of immigrant ghettoes and black communities in the same kinds of terms with which the Humane Society currently sells having your cat or dog spayed or neutered. To observe the effect, just rewrite this script to the minimum extent, thus that Ming Toy is now a legally owned "negress" or "Chinaman". When you're done cringing at the result, remind yourself that the logic behind these dehumanizing attitudes back in the day was accepted just as matter-of-factly as the current reality of canines and felines being considered subhuman animals, rather than just a different type of people who speak their own language, are used to a different environment, and shouldn't have to adapt to living within our cities, because we're all patriarchal colonizing oppressors whose civilization stole the world from it's free-roaming autocthons.
