What i like in the acrylic family is the compact setup : nest and outworld without any long jonction, like the mercury or the saturn. For big mature colonies it may not be appropriated but for foundations i find them perfect

Which do you prefer for your ants? 🐜

Personally, I really like Ytong nests! They are very good at keeping a constant level of humidity, and are also very cheap and easy to make! 💪🏻

Doesn't make sense. If Ytong lets air and water through, how can it hold water and humidity? On the other hand acrylic does not let air and water through, it should hold the humidity much longer, as long as you have a sponge or test tube to feed into it. Try to breath with some Ytong over your mouth, now try to breath with some perspex over your mouth. Which one keeps the air and humidity in?

Hi! First of all, thank you for watching! Ytong, being a porous material, can allow some air and moisture to pass through, but it is also extremely effective at retaining water and humidity due to its capillary action. Acrylic, on the other hand, is a non-porous material, and enables the water to evaporate at a faster pace.

The capillary action only spreads then water and humidity around the nest. It doesn't retain anything. That's why Ytong nests need to be pumped with water every 3 days. Try to breathe with some Ytong over your mouth, now try to breathe with some acrylic over your mouth. Which one keeps the air and humidity in?

Ok, listen... Here's what you need to do. Buy a Ytong nest and an acrylic nest, use a siringe to water both nests with the same amount of water, and use a chronometer to see which nest dries out faster. You will be amazed by the result. I have a ton of different types of acrylic and Ytong nests (plus one made by myself), and I can assure you that the water in the acrylic one runs out in a heartbeat. That's why a lot of companies keep making nests made of Ytong, which are extremely harder to make if compared to acrylic ones.

Hey Burma ants i been having some problems with my Messor Barbrus Colony I live in the UK and my messor barbrus colony workers have all died of in hibernation and the queen is on her own i think i keep feeding the seeds just in case but i have not seen one worker ant in a while can you maybe explain to me what is going on here
@BRUMAAnts Жыл бұрын
Hi! I'm really sorry for your colony! Don't worry, these types of rapid die off are very common in ant keeping, especially during hibernation. I had some of those too! The only thing you can do in these cases is providing your queen with a good source of water (a test tube), some easy to break seeds, put her in an isolated spot, and she will do the rest! Don't worry, this summer your colony will thrive again! 😜
