I remember seeing the original The Price is Rice for the first time and I was laughing my ass off so much that I have got in trouble for laughing too loud in school. Now, seeing this 10 years later and remastered of all 3 of them made me a bit emotional for me because it really has been a decade since I first saw them, and to laugh at the same jokes, even if it’s not as loud as before because I watched it so many times that I can remember it from the back of my head, it still is an absolute great video to see. If I could experience seeing it again as if it’s the first time, I’d do it all over again. Anyway, cheers to 10 years of The Price is Rice.

18:00 - The Actor and the Troll: A Fairy Tale In a prosperous town at the heart of a prosperous kingdom, there was a stage actor who garnered great renown. His performances drew the adoration of many, and any play in which he performed was anticipated by fans of theater throughout the town. But over time, his fame and fortune led him to pride and boastfulness, for such is the way of the limelight. One day, word came to the town of a grand theater that was to be built in a nearby city. The actor, hearing this, said to himself, "I must make myself known there. Surely such a magnificent stage will bring me more fame than ever before!" And so he set out to travel to the great theater. On the way, he came to a wide river, and a bridge crossing it. The moment he set foot on the bridge, a fearsome troll leaped out from beneath it to block his way! "Stand aside, beast!" said the actor. "I shan't be stopped by you. I make for the newly built theater in the next city." "What business have you there?" said the troll. "Why, I shall perform there. I am the greatest actor in all the land, you see, and I deserve the boundless fame I'll find there." The troll knew then that the actor was corrupted by pride. "You deserve to be drowned in the river," said he, "and so it shall be if you try to cross my bridge." And so the actor was forced to turn back. But the actor still yearned for the adoration of the crowds that the grand theater could hold. And so he put on a costume from one of his plays. He took with him a wooden scepter painted to look like gold, and he wore a crown of gilded iron, and he returned to the bridge playing the role of a king. The moment he set foot on the bridge, again the troll leaped out to block his way. "Begone, peasant!" said the actor, mimicking the refined voice of a king. "I am a very important monarch, and I must be away to the next city." "What business have you there?" said the troll. "I have no need to explain myself to thee, peasant. I am a king!" said the actor. "Thou art far beneath me and should know thy place." Although the troll was fooled by the acting and the costume, he found the king even more disagreeable than the actor. "Come closer and I'll drown you in the river," said he. "Then we'll see who is beneath who." And so the actor in the guise of a king was forced to turn back. When he got back to his home town, the actor was just about to concede that he could not overcome the troll. But he came across a traveler who had come from the city that held the grand theater. She was speaking to the townsfolk, telling tales of the theater's splendor and the vastness of the crowds it drew. "You must tell me," said the actor to the traveler, "how you managed to cross the bridge between there and here. A troll guards it, and he vexes me to no end!" "I came by a different path," said she. "Farther upriver is another bridge with not a troll in sight. But you know, a troll won't stop you if you merely show him that you have a good heart." "I'll defeat that accursed troll yet," said the actor, too stubborn to take the other path the traveler had told him about. "I simply need the right role." And so he got together a new costume of fabric that was made to appear tattered and worn, and he got a walking cane and leaned on it heavily. He returned to the bridge playing the role of a kindly old man. The moment he set foot on the bridge, the troll once again leaped out to block his path. "Hail, creature!" said the actor, mimicking the frail voice of an old man. "I am traveling to the next city. If you let me pass, I would be most grateful." "What business have you there?" said the troll. The actor had rehearsed the lie he told. "Merely to visit my granddaughter, whom I have not seen in two years." "Very well," said the troll. "You may pass." And he retreated beneath the bridge. Once the troll was out of sight, the actor congratulated himself for acting well enough to fool the troll. He tossed aside the walking stick and stood up straight, and he began to walk lithely away. But the troll could see him from where he hid beneath the bridge, and once he saw the actor's youthful gait, he knew he had been fooled. He leaped out from under the bridge and chased the actor until he caught him. "Wait! Let me go!" the actor cried. Then he remembered his role. "Ah- What quarrel have you with an old man like myself?" "I'll not fall for your deceit again," said the troll. "A skilled actor you may be, but your arrogance has made you a deplorable man, unfit for any stage." And all the actor's boasting and begging and blubbering would not dissuade the troll, who dragged him into the river and drowned him. As the water filled his lungs, the actor's final thought was of how he could have avoided this fate if only he had not been so prideful. - The End -
