One huge rule change that people don't really seem to think about anymore is the change to maximum Deck/Extra Deck sizes. Prior to the release of Duelist Genesis and the Synchro mechanic in September 2008, there was no upper limit to how many cards you were allowed to have in your Main Deck or Extra deck. At the time you were allowed to have an Extra Deck with 3 copies of literally every Fusion Monster ever made(barring Thousand-Eyes Restrict, who was banned back then), but it was fine because Fusion Summoning was a fairly weak mechanic. The best cards that could easily pull monsters out of the Fusion Deck were either banned or restricted(Metamorphosis, Cyber Stein, Future Fusion, Overload Fusion, etc), and the few remaining good ones like Miracle Fusion and Instant Fusion were held back by low-quality payoffs. If this was allowed to remain in place with the introduction of Synchros, there would be zero incentive to not always carry around a stack of 3 copies of every single Synchro Monster in existence. The change had to be made in order to force players to weigh their options carefully when building their Extra Deck, and it became as big a part of deckbuilding skill as putting together the Main Deck itself.

@@historyking9984 I think if we were still in Synchro era and discussing this, I'd agree with a slight increase, but not in the modern era. There are too many generic extra deck cards with very powerful, almost always accessible abilities. I think keeping the limit to 15 (especially with cards like Pot of Extravagance, whose value is intrinsically tied to the number of extra deck cards "spent" to draw 2) is probably required now. It really does force the player into deckbuilding decisions, especially if they're particularly extra-deck reliant. If we were still at the dawn of the Synchro era with a larger extra deck limit, we might see more hard once-per-turns, stricter summoning requirements and less ways to "cheat" out extra deck cards, but there are far too many now to increase it without needing to reconsider a lot of extra deck tech.

The Biggest issue with Yugioh using Keywords is it just doesn't work, there's not really any simple effects in yugioh that aren't already key words (Piercing, Banish, and Excavate there might be a couple other I'm missing but still)
@justinschwieger712 жыл бұрын
@@rescuerex7031 There are actually a lot of duplicated abilities though that could be condensed to keywords. So many archetypes have monsters that all start with the same 2-3 sentences that could have been a keyword related to that archetype. An easy example to look at is Gemini monsters. Gemini could have just been a keyword that had its effect summarized on the first set of cards in the archetype and then dropped and replaced with the keyword Gemini. This is what MTG does when they introduce a new keyword. The rules for it are given on the first cards that use it and then they just use the keyword on future cards. Every card that locks you into a Type/Attribute/Archetype for the rest of the turn could be summarized with "Dark-Locked" "Fiend-Locked" "D/D-Locked" etc. Piercing and other keywords exists but are poorly used, why do the cards have to say "If this card attacks a Defense Position monster, inflict piercing battle damage to your opponent." when they could literally just say "Piercing" like how MTG uses Trample. Lets take Gabrion, the Timelord as an example card that can be cleaned up by keywording the effects that other cards in (and out) of the archetype share. The current text for the card reads: "Cannot be Special Summoned from the Deck. If you control no monsters, you can Normal Summon this card without Tributing. Cannot be destroyed by battle or card effects. You take no battle damage from attacks involving this card. At the end of the Battle Phase, if this card battled: Shuffle as many cards your opponent controls as possible into the Deck(s), then they draw cards equal to the number shuffled into their Main Deck. Once per turn, during your Standby Phase: Shuffle this card into the Deck." "Cannot be Special Summoned from the Deck." could be "Deck Sealed" " If you control no monsters, you can Normal Summon this card without Tributing. " could be "Lone Warrior (Normal Summon)" "Cannot be destroyed by battle or card effects. " could be "Effect Destruction Immune" "You take no battle damage from attacks involving this card." could be "Shielding" "Once per turn, during your Standby Phase: Shuffle this card into the Deck." could be "Timeloop" You could take these types of keywords and list them at the top of the cards textbox. And then the card becomes: "Deck Sealed | Lone Warrior (Normal Summon) | Effect Destruction Immune | Shielding | Timeloop At the end of the Battle Phase, if this card battled: Shuffle as many cards your opponent controls as possible into the Deck(s), then they draw cards equal to the number shuffled into their Main Deck." This is just a random example using crap I pulled off the top of my head but having the card go from 6 sentences crammed on a card to 5 keywords and 1 sentence makes it much easier to parse. MTG still has plenty of cards with entirely unique effects and uses walls of text for those cards, but the vast majority of cards can be understood at a glance due to their keywords.
@rescuerex70312 жыл бұрын
@@justinschwieger71 That Timelord Effect would be nonsense to people who didn't know the Keywords, and pretty much every Archetype has its own Unique Mechanics that means every Archetype would need it's own Flavor Text with Reminder Text (at that point just describe the effect Normally) that's probably actually the reason every Archetype has different mechanics, and even stuff like Unions sometimes work different so not really Too Complex but too diverse

Field spells used to do relatively little and they were rarely played. Once they started releasing really good field spells (especially ones that go +1 on activation), they became a lot more prevalent. Playing a field spell over your opponent’s field spell was always a +1 in relative card advantage, but once the field spell itself became a +1 as well, the old rule essentially made playing a field spell often a +2. That was way too much. That rule really had to change because of those changes in card design. I definitely agree with you that field spells should generally affect both players, even with the newer field spell rule.

@justinschwieger712 жыл бұрын
Newer cards (post ~2010) are written in a way that uses a few keywords. "When... You can" effects are optional and will mistiming if you cannot activate them while the timing condition is the last thing to happen in the gamestate. For example, if you tribute a card that says "When this card is sent to the graveyard; you can..." in order to tribute summon another monster the first thing that happens is the monster being sent to the graveyard and then the new monster is summoned. So after the summon resolves the card being sent to the graveyard is not the last thing to happen in the gamestate and it cannot activate. If a card says "If... You can" then it would still be able to activate since "If" effects do not have to hit the strict response timing window, or if it says "When" but it is a mandatory effect because it does not say "you can" then it would activate at the next possible window.

Mtg did a similar logo change where they exchanged their older yellow stone like letters for plain solid white letters. The modernized versions of these logos reflect the sterilization of the games. Stripped of all characteristics that made the game feel like it had an ancient quality, which took a lot away thematically from the game. Right down to modern card frames, which have also subtlety gotten "sharper" in the name box and increased the artwork size just slightly, but it doesn't look as good as old prints of cards to me. I will agree with the change to "priority" is good and just logical. now priority is really just, you get the first chance to activate a card effect during an open gamestate during your turn. So your opponent can't just activate a quick effect as soon as you start your main phase. They have to wait for you to either do something first or pass priority like attempting to move to another phase. I think one thing they could do to give the player going second an additional boost is to allow the second player to open 6 cards, but skip their first draw phase. "Priority" I remember Priority meaning something slightly different. From what I remember, If I summoned DAD and you Bottomless,you would start Chain Link 1. Then I would activate DADs effect as Chain Link 2. DADs effect would resolve first,followed by Bottomless. That to me seems more fair than using Bottomless and treating the situation as if you played Solemn Judgement. I wasn't even aware that they had changed that (I've been gone for years and just spent $300 on boosters but the more I learn,the more discouraged I am). I told my buddy who still plays that the game is broken beyond repair and he said "well yeah,but there are shops that run tournaments with no new cards and they use old banlists" but that sounds stupid because Yugi as a whole is broken. Quick side story. I entered an official Yugioh tournament that was held at the Los Angeles Convention Center back in 2013. My opponent set Newdoria face down. I summon Sasuke Samurai and used his effect. My opponent claimed that Newdorias effect still goes through and I said "no,it doesn't." The only subtle rule changes that have affected me are that "when this monster leaves the field" effects don't activate if the monster is returned to the deck anymore, and that your opponent doesn't doesn't have to reveal their hand when you use a card like royal tribute or mind crush. The first effect change irks me, I don't like it. After some thought I do agree with the second rule change though.
@shadowfan1152 жыл бұрын
i mean i can somewhat agree with the fist one but the second is BS they can hard lie and say they dont have the declared card and freaking not have to provide proof which can happen a lot
@outwithayang71532 жыл бұрын
@@shadowfan115 That's a risk yeah but the reasonings I saw were that in a tournament environment with a lot of people watching, that kind of cheating would be too likely to be picked up by someone. And apart from that, it basically gave you full hand knowledge from cards that didn't have "opponent reveals their hand" as part of the effect. No doubt someone's cheated over it, but overall I feel it's more balanced this way.

No mention of ‘removed from play’ changes? Used to think removing from play was the best method of outing a monster vs destroying, banishing, or returning to hand. But now that removed from play is just another word for banished, and the fact that banishing cards is detrimental when used against certain decks, it feels weird reading card effects with that design change in mind.
@HopUpOutDaBed2 жыл бұрын
removed from play and banished have always been the same thing. They just changed it to banish because it's less words and more clear that they can be used again. It was never a mechanic change just a wording change (like how "inflict the difference between ATK and DEF as battle damage" was changed to piercing)
@KaprisReflexx2 жыл бұрын
@@HopUpOutDaBed i must be remembering wrong. Wasn’t there also a game where banished and removed from play were separate piles? Is that a recent fix of the wording or was ‘removed from play’ always suppose to mean ‘banish’?
@HopUpOutDaBed2 жыл бұрын
@@KaprisReflexx They were never separate piles. I don't remember when it was but a all of the old cards were errata'd to say "Banish" when they originally said Removed From the Game. You might be confused because you saw an Errata'd card from the same era as non-errata'd and assumed they were different things. Also old cards like "Banisher of the Light" and "Banisher of Radiance" have banish in the name even though originally they said removed from the game in their effect text.

I believe they changed a ruling on flip effects in the last year or two. Something to do with battling and it not activating anymore idk. It’s like did they really need a nerf?

Even in the anime there were fields on either side sometimes. I remember it being relevant in the weevil fight. In duelist kingdom people got a free field card effect based on the terrain, umi, sogen, yami, etc. Their fight was on a terrain that was half Forest, half Wasteland, so it ended up powering both the insects and mammoth graveyard.

A change I thought about was neither player drawing for their first turn, but the 2nd turn player starting with 6 cards. That way you're more likely to draw interruption on your opening hand but you don't end up with a huge card advantage for the 2nd turn player for turn 2.

I wonder could Konami implement new restrictions for going first. I'm an exclusive Master Duel player and there are so many decks that can go full combo going first and you can't do anything if you didn't have that nibiru and is really frustrating to see 3-4 negates when you start your turn. I would like if they test something like a special summon limit and if it's to opresive they could always retract it.
@yorukazato80742 жыл бұрын
Problem with that is decks that require a lot of special summoning to do anything but end on mediocre boards getting hurt unjustly. Control decks and handtraps become over powered at that point, banlist balancing is a nightmare with such a big rule change, etc. It's not a bad suggestion but it would need a lot more with and a lot of thought to truly pull it off
@ratiuvictor95332 жыл бұрын
@@yorukazato8074 and what do you think is the solution? The summoning limits would heart the combo decks but maiby those decks will start playing some traps again. Maiby if you go first you change 3 hand traps with 3 judgements and the second match when you go second you put the 3 hand traps back. I'm really new to yugioh but the cards that where made in the past 2 years or so are to overpowered going first. Especially this format in Master Duel it feels like a coin tos. You go first 99% of times you win. I don't think I ever played a card game where you can't play the game if you go second
@yorukazato80742 жыл бұрын
@@ratiuvictor9533 personally i dont think there is one. Anything to 'fix' yugioh would be big changes that are hard to justify and implement. At the end of the day Konami is a business also, so any changes come with a risk factor. While some people want slower yugioh back, the majority of sales are by the competitive yugioh players who enjoy the high speed and power level to a degree(not saying they dont see issues with it of course) but changing it to a snail pace like the days of old will upset many and hurt sales. The speed need to be similar but the ceiling of power needs to be limited....
@yorukazato80742 жыл бұрын
@@ratiuvictor9533 ...i think banning/limiting generic boss monsters and extenders, spells, etc and giving archetypes their own such things with reasonable strength could work. But the logistics of doing so are a nightmare. Too many new cards would need to be made and distributed before such bans/limits to not totally flip the game on its head immediately. Then there's the money issue of having so many cards invested practically worthless now and the need to overhaul. Maybe gradually this could work but it would take years to do properly. No solution is perfect when you encompass all players interests, konami's need to stay afloat, and the logistics of any changes.

In a world where starters can be OP or bait so that you build a board and hand traps are typically 1 in hand… (2 and you’re good or May not be able to fully combo, hopefully your deck isn’t that combo dependent for 3 or more cards) Konami has no definitive answer to how they can solve game balance. We still play tho so no reason for them to gray hair over it
@Zetact_2 жыл бұрын
One of the issues is that Konami makes cards with the intent to balance out the game but then makes newer cards with the idea to make those counter cards irrelevant. Like Nibiru was a huge blowout and a game-changer but then Konami started making decks that could get a negate on board in fewer than 5 summons (for instance, Swordsoul or Adamancipator), or can recover easily even after having their board wiped, or in the case of Splight they simply say "haha no Nibiru for you."
@kingkhi202 жыл бұрын
@@Zetact_ I believe there are making a new Nib in the form of a fairy that plays on your turn. The only problem is you’d only take monsters that activated their effects on your turn. Power creep was okay when it came to general non archetype cards, but when a deck no-effort counters one of the best HT, we have a problem

I've been playing since 2003, I've never encountered that ignition priority. Traps have always been faster than monsters; if anyone tried to do that with their JD or Exiled Force, I'd've called them out on it and showed them the spell speed page of my Yugi Starter Deck rulebook. If anything, this sort of thing has been reversed so that modern monsters often ARE faster than traps nowadays, which I think is mega broken.
