It can be easy to misremember the early evolution of the game as a pretty gradual build up to what most competitive players would be more familiar with in the GX era and beyond, so it's always pretty sobering to look back and realize how volatile Duel Monsters could be. Series 2 and 3 both featured stark balance crashes that could have potentially killed the game, similar to what the Urza and Mirrodin blocks did to Magic the Gathering.

Outstanding video. I had no idea about the prevalence or even existence of Meanae Virus as a reaction to BLS/CED Chaos Control - basically what the banlists of late '04 through '05 did for the TCG, except it was partially player-driven in the OCG as opposed to the unfettered Chaos dominance of mid-late '04 over here (since we didn't get CCV until '07 and it wasn't widely available until GLD1 released the following year).The early metagame over there sure was *wild*.

Well the Yugioh OCG was always a complex game. I mean yes, New Rulers made it more complex, but remember the OCG is mainly for a teenage player base in Japan. I mean the OCG packs, decks and sets all say to this day “対象年齢12才以上” (Translation: “Target age 12 years and older”) That implies early to late teenage demographic. And even the earliest Konami released sets all said this since 1999 of it’s first publication. So Konami is clearly telling us this. And this game was meant to rival MTG. Hell, it was the inspiration for the Yugioh OCG’s creation and existence as Takahashi himself has confirmed.
@JanjoZone Жыл бұрын
Well the original game in the manga was called Magic & Wizards! The game is meant for kids, but as it expanded beyond cardass machines, they do need older people to buy it for they're the ones with money.
@Shadowrulzalways Жыл бұрын
@@JanjoZone The OCG or the Bandai one? Or are you referring to the in-universe portrayal of the game in the manga? Cuz I wouldn’t say the game irl is meant for kids. Because the OCG packs confirm the player demographic being early to late teens as I have just pointed out earlier. And they have since 1999 and still do to this day. And let’s not forget the inappropriate artworks with the Harpies, Soul Release, Ultimate Offerings and etc. So that’s something we can’t overlook. The only official Yugioh game that is meant for kids is the Yugioh Rush Duels card game. And Konami made that officially clear. So saying the OCG was “meant for kids” is a huge contradiction as Konami wouldn’t have put “Target age 12 years and older” on the back of every single pack, deck and set in the OCG as a target age range, if confirmed otherwise. It wouldn’t even make sense, marketing wise either. They literally put that on the very first set that came out and still continue to do so, to this day. So it’s pretty obvious that Konami intentionally did that because they knew what player base they were primarily targeting. And judging by the official age range, it’s clearly intended to be a teen demographic. It’s just common sense. Remember, it’s targeting the same age group as MTG and trying to rival it. Also Konami official OCG tournaments are age restricted. They only allow junior high school students at very least. Also the Yugioh series (except Sevens and Go Rush) is a Shonen series which means, it’s main target demographic are early to late teen boys (12-18). And keep in mind, Weekly Shonen Jump is confirmed by the current chief editor himself Hiroyuki Nakano, to mainly target that said demographic as stated in his interview back in late 2019. And he is still confirming this in multiple interviews. This matters cuz Yugioh was published in that exact magazine and all spin-offs were published in the sister magazine V-Jump. And if you have watched the original Japanese version of the anime or read the original manga, it has swearing, violence and extreme dark moments. And sexual content, though on a teen rated level. But still, something you can’t overlook. So the series was definitely not marketed a kids in Japan. And the OCG wasn’t trying to market to kids at all. Not under the teen range. No offense to you man, I enjoy your videos, but I have researched the OCG deeply for years and the evidence is just way too indisputable. That’s all.

OCG History, especially the earliest years is definitely an interesting subject. Given the fact there were cards the OCG had for years before they finally got imported to the TCG. Nowadays, it's not that interesting since things are almost entirely going to be identical, with maybe a few differences.
