This sort of thing happens a lot in Yu-Gi-Oh where a character is possessed or brainwashed and they’re duelled to snap them out of it. Jaden was possessed by the Supreme King Shark has been brainwashed by Vetrix Joey was possessed by Marik Yuya was possessed by ZARC

Come to think of it, I really don't understand why they cut so many episodes from season 2 (especially since they kept in that Kalin arc which had nothing to do with the main plot; I'll admit I didn't like those episodes much but I'd have thought keeping things like a major character vanishing and the antagonists changing reality would have made more sense).

It gets complicated. Byron(Vetrix) was betrayed and thrown into another dimension alongside Kazuma(Yuma's Dad) by Faker. While Kazuma was lucky enough to end up in Astral World, Vetrix was lost in the parallells and wandered for who knows how long. This warped both his body and mind. And when he returned, he became a bitter, vengeful, and scarred man who was only fixated on taking his ultimate revenge on the person who he thought was his friend but tossed him aside and ruined his life. He failed to realize how badly he hurt his sons in his agenda. It wasn't until a later Duel that he realized how bad he had it, and that it would be better to let go of his anger and work on fixing things for the better. He even saves the others at a critical moment! On the other end, Faker was an increasingly frantic man hoping to do everything he could to save Hart from his illness, and time was short. He felt he NEEDED to succeed, even if it meant using his eldest as a tool and sacrificing his closest friends. Not to mention striking a deal with sinister powers from another world, dooming another to destruction...These, as insane and drastic as they were, are all the work of an extremely desperate Father trying to save his child. Both were caught up in terrible circumstances, and did all they could think of at the time to rectify their situations. Were they wrong? Yes, definitely. Is it fair to feel for them a little? I'd say yes, too.
