Love your shirt! My wife is from Costa Rica and she's going nuts to have this plant in the States; last week her friend spot one in a garden's house not far away from us, so we went today to talk to the owner and we came home with 3 cuttings. They eat the flowers in different preparations. It;s kind a National dish in C.R. Good tips thanks!

Thank you! My Yucca plant is 32 years old and is over 10' tall in my office at work. Too large to transport, I can't take it with me when I retire. I feel confident now that I can take part of it with me!

Great Videos Phil. Thanks for being so enthusiastic. I live in London UK and a good 50 years ago my mum planted a 1 ft high Yucca pulled from a small pot. It is now a five stemmer with the main trunk about 20ft high. Everybody here said it would die in the first year, with all the winter frosts and snow we get here every year, but this great plant has proved them all wrong. Thanks to your videos I am now stripping off the lower leaves and making cuts. This plant must go on to make more. About 10 years ago I noticed never seen before very different branches with tiny berries on them growing in the upper part of the main stem, about 15 feet up. Some have since shrivelled and died but newer similar branches are growing even higher in the canopy amoung the usual sword-like leaves and look very green and healthy. Is this a forty years cycle or such like, or just something that happens in mature Yuccas?

Very helpful advice. I have had a yucca plant for 20 years+ I am in no way a gardener but I'm glad to know my yucca has been looked after well, I honestly don't have clue, After watching, I now know i I was watering enough but not too much. I know yucca are very good for low maintenance. I am having it repotted very soon and hope to let it grow more. I do have a question, the size of the plant is small, would repotting in larger pots over time, develop into a larger plant. Or would taking a cutting be an idea? Thank you

I’ll post the video to my KZbin channel…Native Images….so you can see what I’m dealing with….thank you….

Question about stripping hail-damaged leaves off an existing plant. How far up the stem is too far? I see you cleared these right up to the full white stem. Can I do that to an in-ground plant without killing it off? I’d like to really renovate the plant well and good. Thanks- love the video and the back-story.

What kind of soil do these like? Do they prefer to be a little root bound?
@daleandrews35523 жыл бұрын
Let me just jump in to say that they prefer asandy soil, a succulent mix you can buy at your local nursery. I bought some to repot my echeveria Perle von Nurnberg. It came in a small squarish green plastic grower's pot and I transferred it to a terra cotta pot only 1 size larger straight into the pot with some Miricle-Gro cacus and succulent soil especially blended for these type plants. It couldn't be happier!

Very informative! I've had one for a couple of years, but I never cut back any leaves. Is that why the trunk is still so thin? Also, could you have used the pieces you cut off of the cuttings to propagate? I would think that October is too late to propagate. (Mine is indoors.)
@philatv4 жыл бұрын
YES if you cut the top off it'll grow babies

@@philatv thanks! This was my main question. Here yucca's only grow in-house and I found one on the green trash. I repotted it and got rid of the small flies that came with it ...👀 And now I will trim the two upper parts of and try to make three good plants from them and the mother stem. Nothing lost of it doesn't work out! But I sure hope it does.

Will yucca be invasive in the garden? I'm wondering if I should keep them in pots.
@pamelasanchez95042 жыл бұрын
I've never cut my leaves off either and the trunk is very thin also. I'd like an answered to that question also. I repotted in the spring but feel that the pot isn't big enough. I thought I was going to lose it be because the trunk was so thin and the leaves on the bottom started turning yellow. I had to prop/hold it up with a stick and sring for a while while it got strong. Mine is over 10 ft tall and I have to cut it down which I had never done. I'm glad I found this video.

I found a dead/dying potted yucca by the dumpster and I took it inside to inspect it. All three trunks were rotted but they each had a single branch with a few leaves that were still green. I cut the small branches in hopes of propagating them. Should I just stick them straight into some fresh dirt like you did?

lots of wasted stem, if you cut them to about 6" and put them in an inch of water they'll get roots and shoots
