The West is growing fearful that developing countries are finding the “China model” more appealing than liberal democracy. But what exactly is the China model? Professor Ang’s research reveals that the China model changes depending on where and when one looks for it. Recorded 2018.08.27.

IF THE WESTERN COUNTRIES THINK THAT THE REAL CHINA MODEL IS THREATENING THE POPULARITY OF DEMOCRACY , THEN IT IS NOT BAD TO STUDY CAREFULLY WHY CHINA MODEL CAN LEAD TO RAPID RISE IN CHINA , IN TERMS OF HIGH GDP GROWTH , MILITARY STRENGTH , SOCIAL HARMONY , MINIMIZATION OF POVERTY , ETC

Deng's quote: "Black or white, that one catches mouse it's a good cat." Get results, or be replaced. "Feel river bedrocks to get to shore." Don't be afraid of making mistakes, be determined to reach target. "Signal left, turn right." Talk noble communism, practice dirty capitalism.

The key point which I disagree with Ang's talk is her slant towards endorsing "democracy". Anyone who has been watching UK's Brexit (followed by Boris Johnson's rise to become UK Prime Minster), or Donald Trump being POTUS, and so many other examples of autocratic personalities elected through the democratic systems around the world, should see big red flashing signals. And that leads to the second point: the word "autocracy" clearly carries very negative connotation, especially in the west. Not that "One-Party Rule" is too different. Ang is still very negative towards autocracy, or one-party rule. Yet if democracy is the pathway for autocrats to gain power, such as Erdogen, Orban, Duterte, Trump, etc, then it is hard to promote democracy while denigrating autocracy, as she did.

Clueless comment. The non-democratic elements in the U.S. and the U.K. have nothing to do with the President or the Prime Minister. The non-democratic elements are to be found in the intelligence agencies, the media, entertainment programming, the education system, etc.

I am surprised Ms Ang limiting Meritocracy to competency. In fact, meritocracy has a broader meaning that includes patrionic and factionism as well. Any performance evaluation, loyalty and networks in a company play a big role affecting the result of performance evaluation.

What she meant is an government official can be promoted even if he has got rather low performance evaluation as long as he's the secretary of the party chief, for example.

The term meritocracy doesn't have the same meaning depending on when you are. Chinese have their own comprehension of meritocracy that may not be exactly the same in europe or usa.

Cambodia along with Laos, Vietnam & Myanmar differ to China & many other Asian countries is that Cambodia never had the most favored nation trading status (MFTS) so that Cambodia didn't have FDI to build manufacturing base. Lately when China pump investment in, Cambodia have huge obstacles to export to the US & its cohorts. So that the "democratic" American modeled Singapore, Sth. Korea, Taiwan, Thailand prosperities largely due to easy access to WB, ADB, IMF loans, FDI & the MFTS. Even when the late comers Cambodia, Laos, VN & Myanmar have access to loans & the US/UK EU, Australia, Canada & other rich markets, most the market shares has been taken by the "democratic" American modeled countries. So local resources would go no where under US embargo. Poor war-torn Cambodia cannot compete with Thailand. Apple & peanut comparison. Democracy & market orientation are important for effective economic development. However, international finance & political interference (Economic embargoes, tariff, boycott & demonise communist brand) also major factors make or break the economic development.

for Prof. Ang was on the same topic but in shorter time & more specific & interesting, follow this link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJDFf3VqiMR7itk For accusation but posed as the last question: to what extent that China colonised the Cambodia vis a vis the French. Ref: www.smh.com.au/world/fury-in-cambodia-as-us-asks-to-be-paid-back-hundreds-of-millions-in-war-debts-20170311-guvxyp.html that I extract: "1/2 a century after US B-52 bombers dropped more than 500,000 tonnes of explosives on Cambodia's countryside Washington wants the country to repay a $US500 million war debt ..." Since Cambodia refuses to "pay" this $500 Million war debt, the World Bank never lent $$ that effectively put the Red Light to most Western Investors or FDI. This makes Cambodia depends on China investment. In other word, the US force Cambodia into China hand - qui paie il est le patron: Who pays he's the boss. That boy, who exerted that China is a new colonial master is either ignorant or some China hater or political agitator in Hong Kong. Since he just made an accusation without any evidence & not even had a courtesy to give any fact, figure, stats ...

I do not agree with her about the element of democracy and autocracy that made China works. One cannot make a distinction of what contributed to the success of China. It is probably both. She did not mention the it is not democracy that made the colonial power, the West and Japan, rich and powerful it is unequivocally their military might, their ability to loot and plunder, the ability to force global rule-based order to advance their agenda. She is wrong.

The superiority of the West arose from the superiority of its intellect: it invented science and achieved vast superiority in technology. The rest of the world still hasn't caught up.

Well, you gotta be at least somewhat palatable to liberals to speak there :D But yeah, I agree, her talk is insightful in some ways, yet very lacking in others.
