I remember being 12 when this set came out and my parents gave me enough money to buy 1 pack. I went to my locals called “duelist kingdom” in Los Ángeles. It was a rainy day and I chose my pack. I opened the pack slowly like when Charlie opened his Wanka Bar. I pulled BLS and a friend told me to go running home before someone traded me crap for it. I still have my original BLS to this moment.

I didn't have that same fear, mostly because I was a filthy casual and I played for fun even though at that time I had Gladiators, Dinosaurs, Ocean and my Horus deck. My Dimensional Prison trap took care of it for me. So every time I would see someone immediately look through their grave and even said to me "I hope you're ready to lose" my only response would be "Ok?...and?" they bring out the BLS wouldn't even bother to use any of the effects, people were that cocky, swing I would be like "Response...Dimensional Prison, remove from game"

I was playing a simple warrior toolbox deck back in the day when I was 7. It was a terrible deck, but I wanted to build a warrior deck because everyone else at my elementary school thought warriors and dragons was the shit and I wanted to impress. I tried to add as many light and dark warrior monsters as possible. I don't think there were that many back then, but I remember Black Luster Soldier always coming in clutch and having me win games in situations I shouldn't had won.

And then I opened the Invasion of Chaos pack that it came with and pulled a second one. Absolute respect for an absolute king of a monster.

Heh, BLS still is a staple of my deck, I still run Chaos Control mixed with some XYZs. BLS is one of my major boss monsters, holding the line and carrying when I'm getting shafted. He may be old, but this weary warrior has not been lain to rest yet. Nor will he be for a good long time to come. Praise the Soldier, and may he continue to hold the line.

A slight correction, BLS was unbanned around the end of the 5Ds era, not the beginning of the Zexal, as I used him in my JunkDoppel deck which was when Starstrike Blast came out

BLS represents the ultimate boss monster as it's an extender, aggressive body and spot removal rolled into one. All it lacks is a surefire way to protect itself, but that's what the rest of the deck is for. However, we live in an age where a Resonator Fiend deck can dump Abyss on its first turn off the back of nothing more than a two-card opener. Ending your turn with a body bigger than BLS can deal with efficiently while maintaining an effect negate and loading your graveyard with self-recursion or recursion targets pretty much locks BLS out of the possibility of becoming a meta powerhouse ever again. However, that's not to say BLS will never see competitive play going forward, only that it has finally reached the point where it must be considered a component of the deck rather than the main thrust of it.

This is my favorite card of all time. When I was a kid, we didn’t know anything about banlists or anything like that, so I ran the one copy I had of this in a Synchro Warriors-themed deck at school. Good times....

I play a lot of Goat Format duels and I'd still say BLS is pretty format defining for goats. Goat Control is still built around accommodating the card, and Thunder Dragon Chaos Control has been pretty pervasive, to the point of it being annoying to see almost every game start with someone discarding TD, in the Goat Format meta. I don't think any other monster has the same potential to swing or end games that BLS does.

During the Goat format, weren't Asura Priest and Big Bang Shot unlimited? (I haven't seen the F&L list in a while.) Against those two cards, Scapegoat effectively conceded the duel. On a different note, how long were RML and Butterfly Dagger Elma playable together before the latter was banned, and how many daggers were permitted?

Absolutely love this card I returned to YGO right when Chaos Dragons hit it big, and this card clutched out so many wins (also LIGHT attribute means Honest). This card, along with DAD can still very quickly win a game when played at the right time.

I was dueling my brother with a warrior deck with some cards mentioned in this video against a yami deck with dark magicians. The BLS is the only man I got in there that can take down dark magician of chaos and Dark paladin. Always feels great to have your MVP pulling wins.

I'm confused at 3:33 you said that if someone bottomless trap hole's the BLS then it can activate it's effect but since it is a spell speed one effect and bottomless trap hole a spell speed 2 card is activated during the summon response period then shouldn't the opponent not be able to use BLS"s effect? or am I just being dumb (which is quite possible lol)

Busybee6 back then turn player can choose to activate ignition effects during the window when the card would be summoned, like the window when torrential tribute and bottomless would activate, meaning u can add BLs’ eff to banish as a cl2 to a cl1 trap

I remember back in the day unless you had this card yourself (and even then) you still feared your opponent dropping this on you. 😂 This guy could definitely make another comeback depending on how the current format is. You run enough light and darks in your deck (or extra deck if you go into that a lot) and you’ve got a 3K monster on the field that could banish or attack twice. Great video always man.

Can someone explain how to special summon BLS? I know it says to banish 1 light & 1 dark monster from my graveyard but how do you actually perform said banishments? Do I literally just remove 1L/1D monster and then summon him or is the banishment done by like card effects or something? Super new to casual play & I have this card but I have no clue how to actually do this.

itselvin just remove 1 light 1 dark from your graveyard and then summon him. Simple as that

Its done as cost, so you banish them, and then attempt summon(and if the summon gets negated by Solemn, the banished monsters stay banished), look up PSCT, Problem Solving Card Text, and it oughta help you understand when and what a given line of text is in an effect

Pulled bls from the first booster pack I had ever had gotten when it originally was released.Never knew the worth of the card and never knew the power it had back in the day. I never got rid of the card. If I were to quit and sell my cards- this is the one I would keep.

I liked the video. One thing I feel like you should also point out is the rule changes that went into affect that changed the meta during the time. Such as for being able to manually change a monsters battle position after a card effect had previously changed it. That made it so you could Tukuyomi a Thousand Eyes Restrict face-down and flip it face-up the same turn (if the TER wasn't in DEF position to start the turn). Without this change Goat Control would never have become a meta deck. Same thing goes with Royal Oppression. When it first came out you were unable to activate it's negation effect unless it was already resolved on the field. Meaning you were unable to chain it to the special summon of a BLS or activation of a Monster Reborn and negate the summon you were chaining to. That's why Royal Oppression only really showed up in top decks in 2007

I have one of the original versions of this card from the IoC booster pack, I traded with a buddy of mine who parted with it. Extremely glad I have it back, seeing as when I first got it. The booster pack had just been released, I was like 12-13 at the time, and I had convinced my mom to let me buy a booster pack while we were at the store. I got IoC, and was excited to see what I would get. Upon opening the first pack of this set I ever got, I pulled a 1st edition BLS, and was estatic so I showed my friends what I got. That was my mistake, I left my cards in my garage, and ran inside my house to grab a sweater so we could go hang out at his place. Upon returning, he was gone. My cards were still there. I searched my deck, and the card was fucking gone! A few weeks later, we were hanging out and the bastard played the card against me! I called him out about it, and he denied it. Seeing as we were at his house, and I started arguing with him and accusing him of stealing it. His parents kicked me out and denied me ever hanging out with him again.
