Coach Dusan Ivkovic was interviewed by a Greek journalist a few months before his death. He said that if the country had remained united, they would actually try to beat America (i.e. the Dream Team) at the 1992 Olympics!! Would he have had a chance? Well, the 1992 Olympic Final , US vs Croatia, was a close game till the last 5 minutes of the 1st half. Croatia was the only European team that resisted for so long. It had 3 of the 5 starters of Yugoslavia. (Petrovic, Kukoc, Radja). The 1996 Olympic Final in Atlanta was even closer. Yugoslavia (now only Serbia + Montenegro remaining), put up a fierce fight, they actually went ahead 52-51 at the beginning of the 2nd half, US got a 10 point lead only at the middle of the 2nd half, after Divac was sent off with 5 fouls. Yugoslavia was still coached by Ivkovic. Divac, the starting center of United Yugoslavia was still there, and so was Djorgevic and Danilovic, who were coming off the bench behind Zdovc and Petrovic at the 1991 team. 5 players of the 1992 U.S. "Dream Team" were still around in 1996, plus many NBA superstars that had meanwhile emerged. That game somewhat shocked the Americans, Barkley said afterwards "the news are not good for us", meaning that the Europeans were getting closer. So, we can at least say that if Yugoslavia was still united under Ivkovic in 1992 and 1996, it would have probably put up an even fiercer fight, and the Final would have been an even closer game. Yugoslavia of 1989-1991 was certainly the best European team ever.
@onuraksaray833510 ай бұрын
I think the result wouldn't have differed much had SFR Yugoslavia competed in the tournament intact. The three starters who you mentioned at the time were also the most prolific players that were leading the Yugo team in previous tournaments. Drazen was the undisputable leader in that team in scoring and actually in every aspect,Kukoc led Yu in Euro'91becoming the Mvp of the tournament while Dino was the second scorer behind him.Yes Divac wasn't there but there were Vrankovic and Arapovic, who too competed in Yu in the previous 88' Olympics.The only difference would be in the bench of the Yu team in 92' , maybe a bit deeper than the Croats had. Overall maybe the point margin would be less, if not 33 maybe 27-28 instead.

To be honest, this team was as automatic as a Machine. Of course their legendary intense training programs paid off, especially in combination with living together for long stretches, and knowing/trusting each other like brothers. As a result they were so well oiled as a team, I honestly believe they indeed could have won a game against the '92 USA Dream Team. The crazy amount of talent in this group had it all to match them point per point. And as mentioned, they had played with each other for years, the DT members definitally hadn't and some of them were either already retired (Magic) or on the verge of retiring (Bird). But DT had prime MJ and Pippen, the American defense would no doubt have been the challenge of a lifetime for this Former Yugoslavia United Juggernaut! Petrovic and Jordan both were Wolves! Kukoc and Pippen the versatile do-it-all's Radja and Barkley both strong, quick and tenacious under the boards Danilovic and Mullin couldn't miss from deep even if they tried! Divac/Vrankovic and Ewing/Robinson the Big Guns! As far as Magic goes, every above mentioned Yugo player was a good to phenomenal passer in his own right!😮 That Divac dime at 8:25 🤯! And off course Zarko Paspalj and Larry Bird, the European and American Legends 🤟🤟! Both of them were my childhood Heroes 🔥🔥 PS: Realistically the team with the best bench and defense would win it however, so USA normally would win I think 7 or 8 out of 10 times.

Think of it this way: in Barcelona 1992 Croatia's starting five matched up well against the starting five of the United States. The United States pulled away when Croatia had to go to its reserves. Now imagine if instead of Croatia, Yugoslavia played. Starting five for Yugoslavia: Petrovic, Djordjevic, Kukoc, Radja, Divac. Now add the reserves! I am not claiming that SFRY would have won but it would have been a great game. One more thing: in 1996 in Atlanta the same story repeated itself, except that instead of Croatia, FR Yugoslavia played against the so-called Dream Team II. Damn all those petty politicians who profited from the destruction of SFRY!

@ilirvelja563 жыл бұрын
@@bijou201 I think you are young and you probably did not see Petrovic in the 80s, because I do not think that a comparison can be made between Drazen and Tony. Drazen was an individual penetrator. Perfect scorer especially for 3 points. Petrovic was very dominant in Europe and also started dominating the NBA in the Nets (his statistics in the NBA are much better). Tony was a very good player in passing but I do not think he was at the spectacular levels of Petrovic, Sabonis and Bodiroga in terms of passing. Petrovic is much more complete both in Europe and in the NBA (although he has played a little, but has left great impressions). The greatest European player of all time from most polls. After him Sabonis and Nowitzki.
@bijou2013 жыл бұрын
@@ilirvelja56 no, sir you are wrong. Im not young and im not noob. Im their countryman. Watched them live both several times so dont patronize me. Watched Drazen from Sibenka days and Toni (it would be nice of you to spell his name CORRECTLY!) from Jugoplastika and Treviso days. While Drazen was amazing shooter and scorer he didnt have "all aroundness" and agility Toni had. Toni was the most complete basketball player and way more succesfull on both sides of Atlantic. In case u just wanna mention some fan "polls" just check wiki (if u that lazy) to see what Toni has - only in Europe. To be fair, he was already better both by stats in team and as individual before Drazen died. Oh, and I want to remind you about very recent poll organized by all giant media houses in their country where Toni was elected in all of them as the best of all time. You can check it out. I have interviewed many sportsmen and coaches and almost every single one of them said Toni was the best and that all the hype around Drazen as the best ever came after he died. Now, dont get me wrong - i consider him the second best ever in Europe and in Balkan states. He was for sure the best captain and team leader ever and among greatesr shooters of all time. But basketball isnt only about just scoring. I remember very well USA media in 92 during Olimpics. The talked a LOT about Toni. Most of the media was mentioning only Toni as Croatian sensation. Recently MJ - the greatesr of all said that for him Toni was the best both Croatia and Europe had. So its always gonna be is it Petrovic or Kukoc. Personally i appreciate more when player is more complete and with more inteligent and creative solutions, great vision for entire team, and great servings/passes etc....than only scoring. Thats why for me Luka Modric is the greatest footballer of all time in Balkans. Unless someone will do better than him in future. So, your opinion is your opinion. We disagree. I know my comment probably made you angry or hurt but dont need to take it on personal level telling me how old i am. You r the one who is probably. You can say whatever you want about Toni but saying that Petrovic was more complete than Toni is utter shit. Nonsense! Also Sabonis behind Petrovic. Really? Lol
@ilirvelja563 жыл бұрын
@@bijou201 I think you did not see basketball in the 80s, but I think you followed it from the 90s or in the late 80s. For this reason I said that you are young, do not misunderstand me. I say this because, only those who do not have seen Petrovic basketball, can say that Kukoc is more complete. I invite you to watch on youtube Petrovic's performances in Europe in the NBA and with the national team. Petrovic has been trumpeted by the American media and American players as a shooter and scorer indeed (in a match in the Yugoslav championship he scored 117 points), but he was above all the best one-on-one player of all time. His passes were inimitable until then and even today some of his passes remain exemplar.So more complete than that? In Barcelona 1992 Kukoc had psychological problems, just like the rest of the team, in the face of the publicity given to the Dream Team.Only Petrovic was not scared because of his character and mentality.He almost played alone against the Dream Team in both games. And in the NBA he had no problem ignoring the basketball stars among them and the MJ. The confrontations between them were won mostly by Petrovic individually, but as a team by Jordan. Kukoc never came out of Pippen's heavyweight. In the most important poll conducted by FIBA Europe, before the European Championship 2013, the players and coaches are decided as the best of all time Petrovic. while Kukoc was 7th after Petrovic, Parker, Sabonis, Bodiroga, Nowitzki and Gasol. Petrovic was above all an extraordinary penetrator and one-on-one player (similar to Maradona in football)

@rajkoradovic96994 жыл бұрын
In literally every position on the court, a united Yugoslavia of the mid to late 90’s would have had a legitimate chance to beat even the USA dream teams. @1 Petrovic could defend and score against the very best in the NBA: including Michael Jordan. At times he was an almost unstoppable scorer, and as many know, literally scored 100 in a professional game. If his backup was the same Djordjevic who scored 9 3’s in eurobasket final 1995 that’s a legitimate game-changing player. @2 Stojakvic was winner of nba 3point contest twice! Bodiroga was already rocking the eurostep before Luca Doncic was even born. Danilovic a top-notch & seriously tall backup. @3 Kukoc was one of the best clutch shooters and visionary passers of all time and was 6ft 11 tall! Underrated in hall of fame terms because he wasn’t always used properly in the nba, but when given the chance to play freely (like Antetekoumpo is given the freedom now) kukoc had the confidence and ability to change games, especially when the stakes were the highest. In a word: ‘Clutch’. Paspalj dependable, level-headed in all areas of the game and a part of that core group. @4 Dino Radja had the footwork, fundamentals and strength that regularly made a fool of even the very best Nba defenders in the low post. A hall of fame player with a massive heart and could run the break strong. @5 Divac is a Centre who could gave a hard time to literally every nba hall of fame centre from the 90’s: who were basically the best NBA centres of all time, and none of them ever had massive games against Divac. People who didn’t follow his career talk trash about him flopping. What they don’t talk about is the fact that he was one of the leading shot blockers in the NBA in its undoubtedly toughest era, arguably one of the best passing centres of the 90s, could score off the dribble as well as down low and could do all of that creatively and fearlessly and galvanise his teammates. And like all of his top ‘Yugo’ team mates, in the end he was not the least bit intimidated by the dream team players because he played against them most of his career. In 1990 most of these guys easily beat a USA team that included David Robinson, Alonzo Mourning and various other rising nba stars, not just because they were seriously talented but because they were a legitimate TEAM who knew how to play together selflessly and Like a real team. Not just a bunch of stars thrown together. These guys grew up playing together. Yes the dream team were more athletic. But when Larry Bird and Kevin Mchale were making fools of an entire league of unbelievably athletic superstars, nobody was focusing on pure athleticism. They were watching immensely skilled players destroying the competition through ability and teamwork. And this ‘Yugo’ team - if they’d been able to stay together and if Drazen hadn’t died - were capable of doing exactly the same on the world stage. Those who genuinely watched world basketball and the nba during this era - provided they are not discriminatory against the former Yugoslavia because of world propaganda will know that not only was Yugoslavia potentially capable of winning it all in world basketball, but was in the conversation for various team sports: e.g football, volleyball, handball. In the football (soccer) World Cup of that era they were close to beating Maradonna’s Argentina with only 10 men. So for those who might be watching this thinking this was a backwater Eastern European country trying their luck or that this thread is ‘dreaming’... it really isn’t. (the only thing I will concede is that they could have taken their physical strength and conditioning more seriously, but that has almost always been a shortfall of euro players. And only goes to strengthen the point that as far as potential, theirs was immense.)
@bogdanbackup4 жыл бұрын
The 1989-91 version of this team would have been a conference playoff finalist in the NBA, BACK THEN, under NBA rules. Too much depth not to. The USA have 300M people and the former Yugoslavia had 23M, so it's a fair comparison. I sincerely think they would probably win a NBA title, after a year or two of adjustments.

World Federations in all team sports would have fundamentally changed the rules of the 5 sports, only if Yugoslavia had remained to live a few more years. Or it would have allowed other countries to make contingents among themselves (because no matter how the rules have changed, Yugoslavia would have been equally dominant) . We were so dominant in team sports, both representative, and club (clubs Yugoslavia were only made from domestic players, which did not bother, given the aforementioned dominance). That way, Yugoslavia would have imposed new integration process (mentioned contingents) at the global level, instead of entering process of disintegration during 90s!
