Bennett Markel Are you seriously comparing a hand waver to a great composer and a virtuosa pianist? Please.
@timothybolshaw7 жыл бұрын
+darren motise I agree with +Beenet Markel about Abbado. You tend to lose sight of his contribution because of his lack of ego. He inspired musicians rather than dictating to them. This was especially true of the young Yuja Wang. He recognized her mature musical intelligence (even at such a young age) and encouraged Yuja to express herself freely, something I doubt she would have had the nerve to do with most distinguished conductors. Claudio's genius here is his ability to listen to what Yuja is trying to achieve and transmit to the orchestra what they should be doing to follow Yuja's lead. It is difficult to think of another conductor able to do this as skillfully, and the result is an outstanding performance by all concerned. Abbado was probably Yuja's favorite conductor, and she was devastated to learn of his passing. On the audience reaction, I do not think they were unappreciative. The Swiss are not as demonstrative as, say, the Americans. By all accounts, the reviews of the performance were uniformly extremely positive.

This is 22 years old Yuja Wang´s superb interpretation of Prokofiev´s 3rd Piano Concerto. Yuja had first met Maestro Abbado in Juni 2008 in Paris. In an interview with China's television in September 2012, Yuja tells of the meeting that led to the performance to be seen now in the video: "In Juni 2008 I was in Paris to replace pianist Murray Perahia. After the concert, my acquaintance took me to Claudio Abbado´s birthday. He introduced me to Abbado and asked if Abbado wanted to listen to a fresh CD from a talented young pianist. Abbado said, ´We may listen to it now for five minutes.´ He, however, listened to the whole track , which was Liszt's B minor Sonata, until the end (32 minutes). After that, Abbado said, ´I want to invite her to play at the opening ceremony of my Lucerne Music Festival.´ Yuja then played Prokofiev´s 3rd Piano Concerto with Abbado at the Lucerne Music Festival in August 2009 and performed many times with Abbado until his death in January 2014.

We can all have our favourite performances of this piece. For me, Yuja's talent is huge and as she matures she will bring so much more to pieces like this. But let's not criticise what she chooses to wear, shall we? She's a remarkable talent, as this performance shows (with the great and much lamented CA at the helm), and we should be celebrating this. Those who don't like skimpy dresses should look away and listen to how much she brings to the music. Brava, Yuja!

@timothybolshaw2 жыл бұрын
@@robertocollo2890 Exactly. Claudio knew the capabilities of musicians, and how to get the best out of them. He totally respected Yuja's insights into the music. He knew the way to the best performance was to push the young and insecure Yuja into taking the lead, and interpreting the piece as she felt it. He relegated his role to understanding what Yuja was trying to achieve, and transmitting that to the orchestra. The orchestra responded. Claudio was definitive proof that telepathy to a degree exists. It was the combination of Yuja's insights and superb piano skills, Claudio's genius as a conductor, and Claudio's ability to subjugate his ego in the pursuit of the best possible performance that led to this result.

BUT people will differ and argue a lot with each other, when judging and comparing a pianist's performance (interpretation, expression, depth, spirit and errors). The bottomline is that I will admit that I am not an expert (or professional) critic of a pianist's performance, but I am an expert in judging her legs.

Prokofiev is a sort of anomaly - his music is like fingers and music running Sorcerer's Apprentice amok. His patterns are specific and ironically while the music is tonally modern, it is not complex and actually fairly easy to memorize - that being a marvel in itself. Yuja does a splendid job with this - I've heard this 100's of times and this time, I just can't turn it off. I think Yuja is absolutely stunning. She is as beautiful as her music - and I want to see more of both!
