Ms. Wang seems to have extended the range of what is humanly possible in terms of speed, clarity and evenness of tone. She is also a very sensitive and musical pianist. Still, she could learn a thing or two from Mr. Volodos. But why would you want everybody to play the same way?

A second to none is maybe a bit much. Listen to the 12 etudes Marc-Andre-Hamelin wrote for example. They refere to composers like Charles Alkan, Chopin, Liszt and others. In my oppinion those two composers and interprets, Volodos and Hamelin share the 1st place when it comes to virtuosity. Interpretation is won by Socolov or Trifonov. (Taking into account living pianists only, of course ;-)

@TipoQueTocaelPiano7 жыл бұрын
It's clear that Volodos plays it much better. He cares for the clarity of the polyphony and rhythmic subtleties, Wang plays fast and accelerated. Volodos chords have much more power than Wang's. But they both play the "tinker bells" (2: 13 and 2:57) so sluggishly.

Just so you know that this Turkish March variation is arranged by Arcadi Volodos himself, if there's anyone who can play better than the arranger, it'll be none other than himself. Since whatever he play would be the original interpretation of what it should actually sound like. To achieve how Volodos played is no simple feat, in fact, it's almost impossible. Each pianist have their own musicality that is unique and differ from one another. in this case, Yuja Wang is an absolute genius to deliver a totally different expression to this piece. It feels light, graceful and elegant, like a fairy dancing beneath a beach blossom. In contrast, Volodos piece feels heavy, solemn, dignified, with endless energy. Almost like a commander in a war, giving a war cry to charge farward.

Does anybody remember when Volodos first showed up on the international scene? After a few years of "...there will never be anyone like Horowitz..." Volodos showed up, played Horowitz' transcriptions and the main difference was that Volodos had a "warmer" sound and better phrasing. People were gobsmacked. He was considered the artistic alternative to Lang Lang (I don't know if Lang Lang has improved but he had some pretty distorting liberties he would take at the time.) After that virtuosic shockwave, Volodos developed into a truly profound interpreter of the restrained and spacious repertoire. His Schubert is deeply moving.

Yuja may have slightly more technical ability when she plays, but for this piece I much prefer Volodos. His arrangement was meant to be grand, loud, and full of energy. When Yuja plays this, she sacrifices power for speed. Her playing generally sounds very light and fluffy. Volodos adds musicality and volume to every single note. And nobody, NOBODY that I know of is able to play the last portion from 3:24 till the end like Volodos can. His octaves are like a machine gun. He makes the finale so powerful and so grand that it rings. Yuja, on the other hand, attempts to play forte at 4:19, but all that results in is her banging right hand A octaves. Also, it is worth mentioning that this may not be entirely Yuja's fault. This piece by Volodos has no real sheet music anywhere. Anything you find online are other peoples' attempts at transcribing this piece, which tend to have many inaccuracies. Aside from a few of her own interpretative changes, she seems to have followed the most common sheet music online, which in some parts doesn't even closely match what Volodos himself actually plays. A good example of this is 3:20-3:24 and 4:02-4:06.

i feel like the microphone positioning and quality between the two used made these vids unfairly comparable. In Volodos vids it sounded like the piano was right next to my ear, whereas in Yuja's vids there was noticeable distance. They're both Great though.
@gwapster135 жыл бұрын
It's quite a bit silly to compare another pianist's version to the original pianist who actually transcribed it. They are both great, but the original deserves much credit and will always be the "correct" or "reference" version by default, as far as this transcription is concerned. (Don't get started saying Mozart is the correct one, well of course LOL).

@Moptohor2 жыл бұрын
I think the main point here is not only the speed and virtuosity but the vastness of mind of mr Volodos. He is unreachable for Yuja mostly in this. She cares about speed and virtuosity and that's her main aim and she rushes and she is warrior of speed... But Volodos... Virtuosity is just one of his many-many instruments. Yuja cares about how to repeat this even in more virtuosic way than Volodos. But... Volodos cares only about music. Btw: some of his new videos: Arcadi Volodos plays Mompou These gradations of sound are so beautiful.

@michelvenchiarutti1165 жыл бұрын

Very entertaining and fascinating for the jealous pianists! Direct comparisons are neccessarily artificial; if one hears one or the other separately, they're both absolutely fantastic. However, for me, cruel to say it as i love most of Yuja's work, but she makes less effect in the direct comparison. People who only understand speed will prefer her, but, for me, this is a fine demonstration of how, so often, speed is the enemy of true virtuosity! With Volodos i hear wit, humorous timing, color, texture and unbelieveable clarity, all with immense mass and power. The Turkish "crash", (musical term!), is really in character here! Yuja speeds thru lightly, missing the witty character, the colors, the harmonies, (admittedly her "Volodos version" is slightly different; i've heard her live, playing it differently again from here!). Yuja goes too fast for absolute clarity, impressive tho she is. I've always been annoyed that she skips the repeat of the recap, (2.57), throwing the scheme out of proportion and missing the chance for an extra-witty grimace, (Volodos' holding back here is marvellous...), and she lightens the LH octaves near the end. Volodos remains an absolute original, Yuja will surely go even further than this; i'm deloght that she tackles all these brilliant encores already, but the effect will be even greater when she masters the art of holding back at important moments.
@MrMgioiello4 жыл бұрын
Is this some kind of sick joke? Comparing Yuja Wang who plays with absolutely no tone colour, no musicality, no passion. She just plays correct notes and uses sex appeal, which should have no place in classical music. Volodos is one of the greats without a doubt.
