Why is it that they aim for the bulls eye instead of the triple 20 in 501?

no idea.A 701 can be done in 12 darts using the treble 20

My friend told me the reason. The triple 20 is a smaller target than the bull and the entire bull is 50 (not a split bull). Since the triple 20 is a smaller target than the bull you'll miss it more often. The difference of 30 points isn't worth the risk I suppose, but with players of their level I wonder if it still would be.

thanks Cameron.Ive been playing steel darts all my life.First 3 darts i ever threw on a soft tip board i hit a 180..Compared to a "standard" board the trble 20 is massive on a soft tip board.Just wondered and thanks :)

Yeah every target is bigger on soft tip as well as the diameter of the board. I suppose it was designed with the intent to be easier than steel tip boards. Soft tip boards are nice though because they do the math for you as well as keep track of your stats. Obviously you can in steel tip but it's just easier in soft tip. I started with phoenix boards myself. I'm not really old school I admit.

+animaltatz suppose you didnt miss using t20: you will hit 10 T20 and 1 Bull and 1 T17 and finish in 4 rounds(12 darts) suppose you didnt miss using bull: you will hit 13 Bull and 1 T17 and finish in 5 rounds(14 darts) But going for the bull is much much easier then T20 since the bull size is larger and the entire bull is 50. If you miss 1 darts going for T20, you will need to correct the mistake in round 5. If you miss 1 darts going for Bull, you can use the 15th darts to end the game. SO......you can do the math
