How to set up and tune a guzheng 古箏上弦調音

It took me four hours to do something that actually takes 15 minutes because I kept being a baby about breaking my strings. Slowly stretch your strings guys. Place the bridges on, tighten it to where it's till about a cm bendable and wait for three days before fully tightening. Don't be scared to go super tight on the first 8 strings (after the three day wait). That's what got me. Kept wondering how to make such high notes without breaking the strings

Hi I found this very helping for my friends what I did when I began tuning was removing my bridge first and then tighten the strings then when you feel like it’s tight enough just pull the string upwards FROM THE LEFT NOT RIGHT and place your bridge. If you feel like it’s under tunned just remove the bridge again and tighten the strings again, then put the bridge back on. If you hear from the tuner it’s a bit to high you could just tilt the bridge to the LEFT and then looses. tilting the bridge to tune higher is also possible, but for beginners it’s better to take off the bridge and then tune because you would need to be more in control and if you accidentally let go your of your bridge while running it would snap. The reason why I removed the bridge to tune because the tension is higher on the right of the bridge which has a higher percentage of snapping when you tune with the bridge on especially when it’s a new guzheng with new bridges, but when you remove it and then place it back on the tension would be equal in both sides which is much safer and easier to tune. The reason why I tilt it when I loosen my strings because the same reason “unequal tension”. once you get use to all of that crazy ness your strings would get more and more stretched which means you don’t have to do the taking off the bridge stuff anymore and you can just tune it like how you would do with other instruments. I've been playing Guzheng for a while now haha so I'm much more comfortable with the strings but I'm about ready to change all 21 strings. I get a little confused when it comes to looping the strings into that knob you use to tune. Any advice? The way I do it is sloppy

took me about 2 hours to tune mine i think my bridge positions are way off on the low strings but at least its in tune for now ill try lowering tensions when i have to retune it again and see if i can get a better bridge layout and easier bending - very pleased with my instrument!

hello again, I am still waiting for my guzheng but I did a little research.. in this video you used a tape measure while some new guzhengs have like a strip of brown paper on where to place the bridge.. which one is more accurate, tape measure approach or brown paper approach.. thanks...

The brown paper is adjustable by where you placing the first one. You can move it closer or farther from the side. So I won't call it accurate or not, it depends on where you place it. It's purpose is to give the relative distances between each bridge.

I am still in my 20s, but I thought before I get too old, I want to pick up this instrument as I've been in love with it since I was a child. I was looking through your selection, which model/make would you recommend for an extreme beginner (male if that really matters)? I take the bridges off when tightening the tuning wrench on the high-pitch strings. Those are thin and fragile. It's ok to tune with bridges on, but the chance of breaking the string is higher.

i did this on some of the high strings to make very very tiny adjustments when moving the bridges more would cause them to touch if you do it very carefully it should be ok but its best if you can loosen the bridge first a bit by tilting it to the side and then stand it back up after small tuning wrench adjust when fine tuning to get the tuner to hit the mark consistently - i think theres sympathetic vibrations in other strings throwing it off a little bit because the instrument is so beautifully resonant

This is a Musedo T20Z tuner. I found it very convenient to use. The old one, I used a Seiko 501SAT.

This is the standard full-size at 64". I recommend you do the same bridge measurements for all other sizes, because the strings need this much distance to get the right tension, no matter it's a big guzheng or a small guzheng. Some guzheng under 125cm don't have enough space to get the right tension, so you will need to shorten the measurements of the bass strings.

The Musedo is convenient. We have instruction in English for this device. Seiko is more accurate. You can use either to tune all Chinese instruments under chromatic mode.

This is a full-size guzheng. For a smaller guzheng, you need to place the bridges at the same position like a full-size to get necessary tension.

@@chandeleerjet5637 moving the bridge is kinda safe but overused it might damage the wood surface. Loosening it won't cause anything but tighten it too much can lead to string break so just do it slowly to reach the pitch. And new guzheng string usually don't stay in tune, you will notice after a few day that the tune will loose a bit, just re-tuning it again. It will take time for the string to be stable cause during using, the string will be more loose, softer cause you press and play it. Hope you can understand. If there is anything question, please feel free to ask, i'll try my best!

It doesn’t look too complicated but I’ve always been afraid of breaking strings on guitars so it’s even worse with this. It’s the most beautiful instrument I’ve ever owned though and I’m going to make sure I take things slowly with it.

@@chandeleerjet5637 it's okay to be confuse on 1st attempt cause i broke mine too 😂 the string from 1-5 is the most fragile so the guzheng usually come with the replacement for those 5 so don't worry. Just keep in mind that you should only tighten the string by bit, move hand very slight to avoid accident hehe. And even if the string is already to tight but the pitch is still does not high enough. You can loosen the string then move the brigde toward the right side a bit. In another situation when the pitch is a bit higher and you do not want to loosen it by tool, you can press the string on the right side of the bridge, this can help softer the string. English is not my 1st language so it might be hard to coherence, but here are some of my tips, hope it can help you grow love with this instrument cause i really love this too
