To be honest, when your job is to perfectly cut a dude's head off in one fell swoop, it's a bit easy to fuck up
@hipwave5 жыл бұрын
The samurai never liked that kind of, er, job. It was difficult even by their standards because if properly executed the head had not to be severed off all the way , just _almost_ , and while success brought no honor, failure was regarded as utterly disgraceful. Things can't get more Japanese than this... One samurai dude has to disembowel himself because he ripped a fart in the face of the shogun; so he asks a friend for help but the friend flunks it, resulting in the friend having in turn to slice his own belly open. He calls another buddy for the same courtesy but his mate sucks also at the _lop-head-off-but-not-entirely_ thing so he is dishonored too... and so on, and on... *and that's how the era of the samurai came to an end* :D

@@jordanmc9015 there is no difference between those two things: those who voluntarily commit seppuku/harakiri do so specifically because they believe in a code of honor, personal or bushido, to uphold. Mishima had planned out his final day years in advance and knew the speech would be probably unsuccessful and mostly symbolic. One of his principle beliefs was that of Japan’s cultural degradation from the times of war obsessed, honor bound samurai. The difference you see is one due to cultural differences in the concepts of defeat and honor. While you think it’s brave and honorable to go out fighting, dying on their own terms, easterners think it is also honorable to see battles are won before they are fought, dying on their own terms.

decapitation with a combat sword like a katana requires an insane amount of skill, the edge allignement must be perfect, the strike must be powerful and it has to hit precisely between the vertebras. You'd need an extremeley well trained swordsman to pull that off in one sing, and it looks that, for all their talk about bushido, Morita neglected the practice of kenjutsu.

The problem is that a samurai serves a daimyo/lord. While Mishima claimed to serve the emperor, his services were not wanted or encouraged by the emperor. Mishima knew this since he wrote an introductory book to "Hagakure" which outlines the way of the samurai. His death was theatrical and self-serving. It had nothing to do with the duty towards the daimyo/lord since he had none.
