I can’t read or speak Japanese…but I want to say that I really like your channel, especially this episode…I was trying hard to understand the script and was using the translator at the same time. 范雎 is definitely my favorite historical figure of all time. There were a lot of interesting and charming figures from the Warring States for sure, but they were either too heroic or cold-blooded. Compared to them, I think 范雎 was so real as a person--he was emotional, sensitive, revengeful, yet brave. Actually, I think it is even unfair to label him “revengeful” because he was merciful enough to forgive 须贾. If it were me, I would not forgive 须贾 to be honest. He was often blamed for causing the death of 白起 and the defeat of the Battle of Handan. But neither of these could necessarily be attributed to him directly. 昭襄王 was making all the decisions, and it is really hard to assert how much influence did 范雎 assert on him to make those decisions. It is also a great transformation story. A lot of people accused 范雎 of being selfish (advising 昭襄王 to kill Baiqi to advance his own gains and selecting 王稽 and 郑安平 based on his personal favor). It is indeed partially true. But 范雎 was a selfless person to begin with, and he had refused to betray his mother country in the face of bribery. Maybe what happened to him later made him believe that both loyalty and righteousness were undesirable. During the second half of his life, all he wanted were fame, status, and title. All I can say is that this transformation was tragic, but understandable. In fact, according to historical records (战国策), when 昭襄王 asked 范雎 whether he would be disappointed and sad if he lost all his prestiges, 范雎 answered that he would never be sad, because he could not asked for more from his life. He said that he was born a commoner and then raised to the top position after suffering from all these insults and misery. He said that this was all he could asked for. He also told 昭襄王 that he did not care about his own wellness, but the victory of the state of Qin. Again, I think he was just a normal person with unimaginable strength. His life story is very inspirational
