Anders is my favorite DA character. You first start out meeting him, as he is healing a sick kid for free making him a selfless man. Later, he's a complicated rebel who sees the reality of suffering of mages.

I really like the fade and the risk of possession as metaphors for the beauty of the openness and creativity with the legit serious danger of mania. It’s almost a perfect analogy- bringing dreams into real life, the fade being an essential connection for all humans but some having the ability/curse to go deeper, the need to help/control people at risk balanced with those people’s need for freedom and respect... and, especially with Anders, figuring out how to manage yourself without giving up on life. Cautionary tale.

Then he gets arsey if you shut down hit flirting. Seriously, early one you get a dialogue with him where he's asking if he makes you uncomfortable after flirting and the responses are two flirts, one that's very blatantly returning the interest and one where Hawke says "Doesn't mean I want you to stop", implying he does make them a little uncomfortable but they either like the attention enough to go along with it or are still mildly interested in him, and one none flirt option which is basically a, yeah not into you, sorry mate, and that's it. You either flirt back or shut him down completely and the git gets arsey unless you pick one of the flirt back options.

Chose Fenris. Anders is a hypocrite who thinks it's fine to send an abuse victim back to their abuser and basically sell a friend into slavery. Also he's very emotionally manipulative, if you don't go along with what he says he pulls the "if you really cared about me you'd..." card way to often and way to quickly instead of giving a rational argument for why we should go along with him (probably because he is literally INSANE and incapable of coming up with said rational argument) Add to that he blows up the Chantry, killing countless people both in the initial blast and in the following chaos both in the streets of Kirkwall and later down the line because he's actions directly lead to Mage Rebellion, which leads to the Templars leaving the Chantry and the resulting mass slaughter on both sides, which is where the main villain in the next game is able to get most of his troops from. Which means if no Anders, no mage-templar conflict in Inquistion, which means weaker Corphy-snit. Also he deserts the Grey Wardens... who "saved his life" by conscripting him AND got him away from the circle, which is what he claims he's always wanted, for what reason? Because they told him he couldn't bring a cat into the Deep Roads, uh yeah, mainly because said cat would probably be eater by a giant spider if you did so. He claims the wardens (Nathaniel and the Warden Commander especially) are his friends but doesn't think twice about turning his back on them, hmm... I wonder who long it'll take him to turn his back on Hawke if things get serious? In short, he's an insane emotionally manipulative, disloyal hypocritical terrorist who is the main cause of rampant death and destruction. So yeah, pick Fenris and the most you'll get is a few smashed wine bottles and him needed help to work through his PTSD from his slavery and abuse, which Fenris will accept if you give him time and unconditional support (you also don't have to agree with his opinions on mages, heck you can be a mage and he still feels the same about you as non-mage you, you just have to be willing to hear him out).

@@fiercetin I think a mage Hawke is the perfect romance for Fenris because it actually helps him realise the whole Not All Mages thing when he talks about the horrors he saw and how he started to associate magic with evil. Remember his first time being free that he remembers he was amoung the Fog Warriors who sure were rebels, I think they were technically Tal Vashoth but I don't know 100%, but even Tal Vasoth hate mages (or Sarabas) so even in his short time being free before he ran for good, he wasn't exactly exposed to the best in terms of mages. Then he meets Hawke (who in this scenario we'll say is a mage) and not only are they strong enough to turn down demons, they show they able to actively fight against demons in ways he's probably never seen mages do before. It's why he approves when you criticize Merrill's flippant use of blood magic and why he's so harsh with her himself, Merrill acts like so many young apprentice mages in Tevinter and I like to think she stands in clear opposition with mage Hawke's (especially in Inquisition) clear line against blood magic. I think a mage Hawke gives Fenris some kind of hope that maybe magic won't ruin the world despite mages like Anders trying their best to make that happen, even if mage Hawke doesn't romance Fenris. Of course I've only ever done the friendship romance so I don't really know how he reacts during the rival one because I've never been keen on the rival romances (except Sebastian, before I saw Fenris I was going to do a Rivalmance with Sebastian so much like my Cousland married Alistair, my Hawke could become a Queen (I know it's princess but it's the ruling family of Starkhaven so it's basically a queen)).

if you friendmance him then yeah, he's a manipulative liar in Act 3 and he never fully trusts you. on the rivalmance path, however, he is much more open and honest with you and there's the conversation where you can see for yourself what he's been going through and after that you just cannot hate him. his "please forgive me for failing" line goes right through your heart like a sharp knife and stays there :( rivalry with Anders is one of the best thing about DA2, esp cause it gives you totally different perspective on both Anders and his feelings for Hawke.

How can ANYONE like Anders after that. Was going to romance him my next playthrough just so I had a different story in Inquisition but after seeing that scene... @@fiercetin Fenris is a precious baby wolf who must be protected from all evil in the world... especially a mad Abomination who can't see that most of the Kirkwall mages we interact with kinda need to be locked up considering I think all but two jump to blood magic and demon summoning as soon as you meet them. And his former abusive owner. Those two can both die in fire for the way they treat the precious. In fact Anders can bog off to Tevinter, I'll sell him to Danrius instead if Anders doesn't think there's anything wrong with sending an abuse victim back to their abuser. I'm sure the two of them can come up with many lovely tests to run on the Abomination and Anders will enjoy it as much as he must assume Fenris enjoyed his mistreatment if he's okay with sending Fenris back. Anders constantly whines about mages being oppressed but his comment about how he is all for sending Fenris back with Danarius completely invalidates ANY right he has to complain about whatever imagined abuse he faced at the Circle in Ferelden, which I think is considered one of the nicer and more relaxed Circles in terms of mage oversight. He's a damn hypocrite! Though since in my next play through of Inquisition I'm gunna leave Hawke in the Fade because the Warden I'll have with me will be Alistair and I need to protect him almost as much as Fenris, I can't have a Fenris romance Hawke... as I said, was gunna romance Anders because I kill him at the end anyway but now I can't do that and I'm stuck because if I don't have a firm plan to romance someone else, I'll end up romancing Fenris so the like 8th or 10th time XD. Fenris is like Garrus from Mass Effect. I didn't plan on romancing either of them the first time I played the games but once I did they because the ONLY ones I can ever romance XD. I love them both equally despite being VERY different characters... and Cullen, we'll add Cullen to those two as well in terms of preciouses who must be protected (Sorry Solas but you broke Lavellan's heart and are apparently going to be evil next game so I'll snuggle with the yummy ex-Templar who SINGS for Mythal's sake!)

I think you’ll be able to help him overcome himself in the next one. I think we will have a new villain in the next one. I also think Hawke survives the fade if you leave them in there. And if you can’t romance Anders or Fenris, romance Sebastian, I know he’s kinda boring, BUT he likes it when you kill Anders, and his voice actor has a great voice👌🏼 I like the rivalry romance with him, cause they don’t have to have a chaste marriage then😂😅

@@fiercetin Yeah I've read a theory on the whole Hawke living in the Fade, it's connected to what Flemeth says about standing on the edge of the Abyss and not hesitating to leap and the name of the quest where you chose between Hawke and the Warden being Here Lies the Abyss. I don't know where I stand on that one. But I still couldn't leave a Fenris romancing Hawke there because even if it isn't permenant, the mental image of how Fenris would react to Hawke being stuck in the Fade would just break my heart too much, anyone else and I would be able to deal, but not Fenris. But I also don't want him to be alone when I play the game so I'm always pulled back to romancing him no matter how hard I try to not... XD. It should make me feel better to know if I don't get with Fenris he'll get with Isabela... but no, as far as I'm concerned, Fenris and Hawke is canon and nothing else is correct XD. Really hope you have the chance to save Solas and he was my first Inquisition romance too, but I've had a soft spot for Cullen since Origins so I'm a little more biased towards him, plus I romanced him in my second playthrough so he was like balm on my still Solas broken heart. Love the description of Solas being a crotchety old man. I never had a hard time getting approval from Solas, just ask him question and don't be a dick about him being friends with Spirits, especially because Cole kinda proves Solas' opinion on Spirits and Cole is a precious baboo that in my head my Lavellan adopted. Also understand that the Dalish don't know everything about their own history, which I thought was a given even among the Dalish, heck in the Dalish origin Mahariel can even say to Tamlen that so much of their history is lost to them when they see that statue so I figured the Dalish acknowleged that they didn't know everything. Even Merrill constantly talks about recovering their people's history. Solas is a Dreamer, it's actually pretty likely that he'd be able to uncover truths that were lost when Dreamers became rarer and rarer. I was tempted to do a Sebastian Rivalmance my first time playing before I fell for Fenris (who honestly probably has THE most attractive voice in all of Dragon Age I'm sorry) but it's weirdly hard to get him rivaled, like I have to have a guide on the right dialogue because when I click what I think will rival him, it's friendships him, it's like part way through the things that rival him swaps with the things that friendship him. Plus... even rivaled he's a bit of pretentious snot. I dunno maybe I'm a sucker for elf-human couples, for me my "canon" playthroughs are Fiadhe Mahariel and Alistair (Mahariel remained his mistress when he married Anora because she wants what's best for Fereldan but she isn't willing to let that ruin her life with the man she loves, plus I imagine her and Anora become good friends who enjoying teasing Alistair and Mahariel helps Anora to see things from the elves perspective when cross species issues come up while Anora helped Mahariel understand Andrastians because poor Alistair could never explain THAT religion to her well enough for it to make sense), mage Dorcas Hawke (I wanted to give her a name that would make sense for why she goes by her family name while her siblings use their first names) who sided with the Templars and killed Anders who romanced Fenris and Laoise Lavellan who married Cullen using her Dalish vows while promising Solas, who'd she'd uncovered as the dread wolf, they'd redeem him while bunging Lelianna (who never travelled with Mahariel and Alistair) on the Sunburst throne because Lavellen would hope it would mean she didn't have to work with her anymore after she disbanded the Inquisition. I have done other Origins and Inquisition playthroughs but those were my favourites so they're the ones I considered canon at least to me. BUT, if it is possible to redeem Solas that may change because my Solas romance was also one I was also very fond of.

I know people are divided on Anders. Personally, I love the guy. He is kind and wants to go without so he can help others. I don't agree with him killing innocent people who didn't do anything to him. But in the same breath, he was right. There was never going to be room for compromise, so there was no peaceful solution. And anyone who felt blindsided wasn't paying attention. He made it clear he was about to do something crazy from the get-go. Starting with why he came to kirkwwall. And it wasn't just to hide. He said through about the anger he had in him and how unstable he was because justice/vengeance along with many other hints along the way. Either way, I love him a character, and my female Hawke did too.

Currently going through a vanilla run (because mods are impossible on console) but I think I only had moderate approval and he still gives the I’ll only hurt you spiel. Honestly it was so strong and off-putting that it’s the reason I never romanced him.

Overall, my feelings remain the same in regards to this character. The same as with someone in rl, conflicted asf. Pain and love. As Anders says... you cannot tell where one ends and the other begins.. I hate it. This is why I now stick to the angsty, porcupine elf 🥰 lol Thx for uploading. I do* have to point out, even when I first played this game without knowing how things would turn out, had Anders tried to harm templar recruit Alistair, that would have been *it* . *He would have died right there and then.*

Not sure frankly, depends on what you call good. Most consider that the ending is tragic. It always ends the same way also, with his little terrorist stunt (sorry for spoilers, I tried not to spoil too much).
