In June 2022, Yunchan Lim became the youngest person ever to win gold at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition; his performances throughout showcased a “magical ability” and a “natural, instinctive quality” (La Scena) that astounded listeners around the world. The depth of his artistry and connection to listeners also secured him the Audience Award and Best Performance of a New Work (for Sir Stephen Hough’s Fanfare Toccata).
Just 18 years old, Yunchan’s ascent to international stardom has been meteoric. His final Cliburn Competition appearance with Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 3 delivered the defining moment of the three-week event; as one critic noted: “The applause that followed was endless: a star had emerged before our eyes” (Seen and Heard International). The video of that performance trended globally on KZbin in the days after, reaching #25, and has now become the most-watched version of that piece on the platform, amassing more than 5.5 million views in just one month.
Yunchan has performed across his native South Korea-including with the Korean Orchestra Festival, Korea Symphony, Suwon Philharmonic, and Busan Philharmonic Orchestras, among others-as well as in Madrid, at the invitation of the Korea Cultural Center in Spain. His 2022-2023 inaugural tour as Cliburn winner takes him across four continents, with highlights including the Aspen Music Festival, La Jolla Music Society, and Performing Arts Houston in the United States; Seoul Arts Center, National Concert Hall in Taipei, and the KBS and Korean National Symphony Orchestras in Asia; and recital tours in Europe and South America.

I desperately hope someone makes a film about all Yunchan Lim's renditions so that classical music fans can listen to his music while he is playing in his teens. I don't want to miss his teenage music because it seems that the sensibilities and pristine innocence of this age make his music shine even more. At this level, it's better he reduces the number of concerts around the world and someone like The Cliburn gets a professional team for him to record in perfect acoustics, and then CLASSICAL MUSIC would be shown in cinemas for the first time. Considering the world's classical fans, I guarantee millions viewers will flock to the cinemas.

아마도 베토벤도 임윤찬의 연주를 들으면 어깨춤을 추었을 듯. 특히 19:12 부분은 마치 베토벤식 바흐같고, 21:25 부터는 베토벤식 모짜르트 같은 발랄함이 너무 좋네요, 물론 처음부터 다 좋지만, 이 곡을 들으면서 느낀 점은 베토벤이 인생의 아픔을 너무 많이 겪지 않았다면, 뭔가 해학과 재치가 넘치는 유쾌한 사람이었을 것 같아요. 물론 저는 베토벤이 어떤 품성의 사람이었는지는 모르지만, 그냥 심각한 베토벤(그의 초상화들이 좀 그렇잖아요)의 모습과 달리, 이 곡에서 느껴지는 베토벤은 쾌할함과 장난기 많고 짖궂은 청년의 모습이 그려져서 듣는 내내 즐겁고 미소를 짓게 되네요. ㅎㅎ

Glenn Gould played these Variations in the 50s and 60s, but they are rarely heard these days. Yun Chan’s is big, full of colour and changes of character. His version of Beethoven’s Bagatelles Op 33-a study for these Variations perhaps? Big, ambitious in scale, not student material. Lawrence Jones

윤찬군의 연주는 악보의 재해석으로 다시 정리해서 들려주는것 같습니다..그동안 뭍혀있던 멜로디, 강약, 프레이즈 등을 이해하기 쉽게 풀어주는 마력의 연주를 해 주네요..그래서 어려운곡, 생소한곡도 넘 좋습니다..

You can undoubtedly hear that he has worked and mastered Bach contrepoint. I had the impression at some points that he was playing some Bach. For me he is the top-notch pianist of his generation. Perfectly mesmerising 👌

I have been to The Cliburn since 1981 and blessed to see hundreds of marvelous pianists. Obviously there have been many deserving winners - I was floored by Kholodenko in 2013 and absolutely mesmerized by the blind Nobuyuki Tsujii in 2009 (I swear they was not a dry eye in the hall when he played), but this young man is truly beyond description! I hope he brings the joy of his incredible talent to the world for years to come!

임윤찬의 Eroica, 피아노 연주는 독보적이네요. 이 연주곡 들으니 저절로 레너드 번쉬타인처럼 몸짓을 하게 되네요. 셈세하고 열정적인 연주 너무 즐겁고 행복합니다. 2:15~3:30 8:00~8:15/ 8:40~9:13/ 11:30~12:38/ 21:20~22:09/ 23:25~23:30.너무 아름다워, 평화가 밀려오고 나의 심장을 뛰게 하네요!

항상 자신의 의도대로 작곡가의 모습을 보여주는 실망없는 거의 가장 완벽에 가까운 예술가같이 저는 느껴져요 나이가 숫자에 불과하다는 말이 임윤찬님의 커리어를 봐도 그렇지만 음악을 듣고 보면 더욱 잘 이해가되네요 항상 감사합니다
