The NY Phil’s 2023 residency at Bravo Vail came to a close last week with an exhilarating performance of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 from Yunchan Lim, the youngest-ever winner of The Cliburn, conducted by Marin Alsop.

I was there and this concert was wonderful! In the video you can see and hear only a small portion of the full audience, which was likely over 2,000 people. Yunchan had round after round of standing ovations -- plus applause from the New York Philharmonic orchestra members -- and he played two encores, an excerpt from Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, and one from Chopin's Etudes Opus 10. Without a doubt, Yunchan is a rising star with a great career ahead.

All the modern players are cold and colorless like Zimerman Kissin Trifonov Pletnev Buniatishvili Yuja Wang Hamelin Stephen Hough and so on! The best beautiful colorful players are Really=Wilhelm Kempff Emil Gilels Artur Rubinstein Radu Lupu Vladimir Ashkenazy! You can hear differences between this performance and the Cliburn/2022 version. It's exciting that it's not a cookie-cutter performance and that Yunchan's interpretation changes as he grows as an artist - he truly plays in the moment, according to his inspiration. Hopefully, we'll get to hear the complete version.
