I remember when I was like 14 or 15 and a freshman in HS, in like 2009, I wanted to paint my nails so bad and used a black sharpie, cuz I was too nervous to ask my parents for nail polish. Then in the morning before I had to go to school I got so nervous about it and tried to take it off, but it was permanent marker so it wouldn’t really come off. So I just went and honestly most people didn’t really say anything. It was the first time I really outwardly expressed myself with fashion and to my pleasant surprise most people where actually pretty chill about it, especially my peers. The teachers where actually more critical and assholes about it than any of my friends or peers where. That’s right around the time I found and fell in love with Gaga too, so my fashion exploration just got bolder from that point on haha. Gradually discovering the tolerance of my peers through simple acts of expression like that was what gave me the courage to eventually come out shortly after I turned 18, in 2012. I was still nervous that I might lose friends, but it was the complete opposite, I gained more friends and got closer with the ones I already had. They where really happy that I was being honest with them and myself for the first time. I think all of us in the 18 to 30 yo age range have had very similar stories, feelings and experiences growing up, which is sick cuz it’s comforting to know a lot of us where going through and feeling the same things.

I know your comment is already three weeks old, but your story really hit me. I grew up at the same time as you-- 14/15 years old in 2009. I'm a transman who was questioning...everything in 2009. Unfortunately I didn't have that support in embracing who I was back then so I repressed a lot until I came out at age 22. Now at 26, I am completely Elliot. I'm overjoyed that YOU got that support from your peers. That is so incredibly important and it gives me relief that stories like mine weren't the only ones from that time. I'm glad you got that support and hope others are receiving the same.

I know what “love song” is about but when I listen to it I think of it a bit like a letter to oneself (to whoever is listening, from whoever is listening) about finally being able to love themself and I find it really comforting since I’m still learning how to love myself and I’m not quite there yet but the song gives me hope that I will get there one day
