Outstanding. Just yesterday he sang this exacting lead role at the Internationale Handel Festspiele in Goettingen: he blew the audience away, not only with this signature aria but moved me to tears with his rendition of Aure deh per pieta. He has the build, the personality and the male aura to really make you feel you are witnessing an emperor or ruler at work. Plus his acting has developed to an astounding level.

As for Fagioli, his usual brilliance with a bit of comedy thrown in. I am still looking for a similar platform appearance where he wasn’t in tails as far as I remember. It left a sharp memory in my mind because the horn player, who was standing on Franco’s left, I think, went to sit down at the end. But the applause was so tremendous that Franco invited him back not just once but two or three times, to the front of the stage to take his bow as well.
