if you watched Game knights where Jimmy played this, you know giving people mana is not something you want to do, unless you can stop them from using it pr unless they play decks that can't use it. Yurlok and magus of the vineyard were huge bombs for the other player, Namely Ladee Danger, she had so much mana and could use all of it. she played Doran the siege tower and had an outlet for all the mana. suffice to say, that didn't end well for Jimmy. it was the Christmas holiday episode.

No mention of the infinite combos with Yurlok? Both Umbral Mantle and Sword of the Paruns in addition to any mana increaser for Yurlok (Leyline of Abundance for instance) will give all your opponents infinite mana - which in turn makes it infinite damage to opponents.

On War’s Toll: opponents may choose to tap some/all those other lands for mana in that moment, else they just become tapped. Spectral Searchlight is great because I doubles as a mana rock and away to mana burn your opponents.
@hoppeltrottel74844 жыл бұрын
I've spent some time brewing with Yurlok over the last few days, so this video is very welcome. 😊 It's always a dangerous thing to give my opponents extra resources; they will try to use every single mana for spells and abilities. Therefore I'll include permanents that allow me to exploit all that spellcasting. Ruric Thar, Blood Seeker, Essence Warden, Cindervines, Arasta of the Endless Web, Taurean Mauler, Lurking Predators, Hamletback Goliath, Dragonlair Spider, Managorger Hydra... Lavaborn Muse is also a good inclusion. Immolation Shaman an Runic Armasaur to punish the use of mana sinks were already mentioned by a fellow commentator. Kheru Mind-Eater, Hunted Wumpus, Painful Quandary, Wild Evocation, Widespread Panic and Thought Prison empty my opponents' hands in a fun and interactive way (I don't like straightup discard effects in casual EDH). Tangleroot and Blinkmoth Urn give my opponents even more mana they might not be able to use. Triskaidekaphobia is a fun card with Yarlok. Kederekt Parasite, Fate Unraveler and Underworld Dreams punish card draw effects. The deck isn't finished yet, but oh boy it's going to be fun! 😁🤡

Jimmy played this on a recent episode of Command Zone. The deck's huge weakness is opponents with mana sinks. As such I think you need a lot of targeted removal to keep these things off the board, especially enchantment and artifact.
@jeffreyjohnson36874 жыл бұрын
Or just Harsh Mentor, and his friends. Burning-Tree Shaman, Immolation Shaman, Runic Armasaur. Cindervines is also quite nice in case somebody wants to let Yurlok's mana out through instants.

Using creatures, artifacts or enchantments that also increase the cost of spells they could cast may help with that.

Wrong,Mana sinks do not save You,Cause your not spending the mana in the mana sinks,So you get burned for the mana you sank into it (I.e. Kruphix)
@jeffreyjohnson36874 жыл бұрын
@@bilbobaggins7558 I think you misunderstand what we mean by a mana sink. We're talking about things like Staff of Domination where you can spend mana so you don't get burned. Effects like Kruphix, btw, DO prevent the mana burn as it replaces the effect of mana leaving your pool. Interestingly enough, as long as you have Yurlok out, you can still fireball them for their entire mana pool once you REMOVE the Kruphix or similar effect.
@mrw2104 жыл бұрын
@@bilbobaggins7558 Huh? A mana sink is something like Staff of Domination. It's something you can activate at instant speed to use up any floating mana you have left, therefore you don't get burnt.

How well does that strategy work? Does it backfire a lot, meaning do players tend to find ways to use that mana instead of just getting burned?

@@Volkbrecht from my experience personally, it backfires if there’s any deck who has a commander with a mana sink on it. I have a friend who plays slimefoot and I play kenrith, so giving excessive mana to either deck turbos both of them to a super fast win.

Mitch, I am missing you talking about the mana base and ramp. I guess it is boring for you to say every time the same things, but they are cool. We love hearing the first off is Wayfarer's bubble and The golden pig is... These things made your videos unique. The ten tactics chopped the decks into small digestable chunks, which made them much easier to understand and they educated us, commander players, how to build more effective decks on a budget. For newer player can be interesting whether you should use the thriving lands in 2 colour decks or whether you use a dessert package to add some extra spice. I love using the budget lands which have some extra utility e.g. the Memorial cycle from Dominaria. Seeing whether you put them into a deck or not helps how much are you happy to sacrifice of speed versus a little utility. Thanks for the experimenting though. I know you need to see what works and whatnot.

Since I did spend time messing with Yurlok for my next deck to focus on, here are the differences I have. Note, I am going off the upgraded list: So I focused a bit more on constant taxing of the opponent and here are the cards I had that are not on the upgraded list and a quick reason as to why: Creatures Klothys: Additional taxing on the opponent + graveyard disruption if needed Zo-Zu Punisher: Again, even MORE punishment for playing lands. Combined with destroying lands through Shaman (and potentially other cards) if you wanted this seemed like a good include Mogis, God fo Slaughter: Again, I focused on taxes Karvek & Ruric: 2 cards... even more taxing Deathrite Shaman: Taxing + Mana Outlet Enchantments/Artifacts/Spells: Assassin's Trophy: Might be due to the budget here but do I care about giving an extra land? Ehh.... not really Staff of Domination: Price went down on this, just a great outlet for unspent mana Overabundance: Double tax potentially. It deals damage on tap and produces extra mana for the opponent (and you). Spellshock: Again... more tax Ankh of Mishra: More tax I definitely, though, like some of the Discard elements you've done for your version so I think I will seriously look into that as a different tactic and see which I prefer. My guess is I'll keep some of the taxing I can control (Klothys, Mogis, Deathrite) and rid myself of some of the opponent taxing (Karvek, Ruric, Ankh) in favor of the discard strategy. This is the first commander in awhile I am absolutely excited about bringing to a table to play.... once we can... I even grabbed a Foil Etch of Yurlok =)

I've been working on a Yurlock build myself. I really like some of the cards you included in this. Awaken the Erstwhile is a card I have glanced over and I didn't really consider it until I looked at your list, now I'm definitely including it. My build is a little more politics heavy. Kind of a group (bear) hug. Two cards I would recommend you take a look at that I really like are; Theater of Horrors, and Pir's Whim. Theater of Horrors can be a fun way to draw some extra cards each turn and also provides you with an on board mana sink with its three and a red to ping someone. Pir's Whim is a little less budget at two bucks a copy, and maybe not as on theme with your build, but I still think it's worth a mention, (and totally not because it's one of my favorite cards.) Since on board mana sinks frequently come in the form of artifacts having artifact removal that can force everyone else at the table to sac an artifact while you ramp is a pretty sweet deal. Not to mention you can use it politically, declare someone else who's behind in land a friend in exchange for a favor. Also if you ever do a break the bank for this, you should definitely consider Xantcha Sleeper Agent. (Edit: Just realized there's a break the bank for this.)

I know these cards aren't exactly "Budget", But Nyxbloom Ancient and Staff of Domination will grant your opponents infinite red, green, and black mana! and that's an OTK for ya! (that's assuming that no one has a mana sink to pour the mana into)

Great tips for Yurlok, I have already built mine, but I'm always looking for different cards to increase it's power. Citadel of Pain, Overabundance and Tectonic Instability are 3 quite old but amazing enchantments to dump your opponents' Lands. Cards that deny players from casting are also great, although they aren't so common in Jund collors, I got Dosan on my list right from the start, because you want to assure they can't use the mana you give them with your sources of mana. It's important to put mana sinks on the Deck, so you can spend all the mana you can get, black and red are great for this. At last, some creatures to hold your ground and stop attacks are really good. Scorpion God is a nice addition, it can spend the mana you get dumping you opponents' creatures and draw you cards, Ruric Tar is quite funny, but you have to be carefull if you haven't already casted your core enchantments, and Nyxbloom Ancient is a beast with Yurlok.

Why do I love Yurlok? Well I play Kenrith a ton and I’ll happily accept free mana. Real talk though, Yurlok is pretty fun to play against and really makes you have to think about how to spend your mana in order to not get burned out.

I would add Jade Mage. With a deck that generates as much mana as this and has an incentive to use it, mana sinks are very relevant and Jade Mage is very practical. Ant Queen could also be used and is more efficient but Jade Mage sits very low on the curve and so would get in before the Queen. Gemstone Array is another good choice since it lets you bank your mana just like Horizon Stone. While obviously not as efficient, you can keep it as colored sources, which can let you spend it at instant speed in case the Array comes under threat.
