Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes!
Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
Somewhere beyond the barricade
Is there a world you long to see?
Then join in the fight
That will give you the right to be free!!
Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes!
Will you give all you can give
So that our banner may advance
Some will fall and some will live
Will you stand up and take your chance?
The blood of the martyrs
Will water the meadows of France!

Japan was the only non-Western country to participate, and I am proud that Takeshi Kaga, the only person of non-European sang in Japanese, an Asian language. And Japan is the third country where Les Misérables has been performed, after the United Kingdom and the United States.

It is only about 20 or so countries that have translated versions though. I'd argue that this song actually represents a very Western view of revolution. Which makes sense, it is a French song. I'd say that it's not as translatable to other non-Western cultures as it may seem.

I doubt there was any evil intent behind the performance. I'm pretty sure that a Nigerian Valjean would have been perfectly welcome. As for the gender thing, Valjean IS male in the play. You could change the script, like performing Hamlet with all-female roles, but then you would have a new piece of art, not the original. I agree that the message in the song is universal -a call for people to overcome persecution and adversity.

Among them, the singing voice of Michael Burgess in Canada was the most transparent I've heard, and the lyrics directly touched my heart. What can I say about this gathering...each performance is breathtaking and leaves you replaying the music in your head for days. Live theater, there's nothing else like it. 🥂💃

Ok to be honest, I like Ireland’s the way best because it just sounds so much more powerful and expressive. But I’m so impressed by how synchronized everything is. Considering that most of the people here doesn’t understand most of the languages and how many strangers from different countries worked together to create this amazing performance

Who care's about who's best! - it's a song of freedom and brotherhood, and that's all - it does'nt matter what country you're from this is the world's song.

It's a pity the orchestra starts to drown them out halfway through + the audio quality of 360p leaves a lot to be desired :(

The odd thing is that ‘Irelands’ part is sung by a Scot 😀

@@stephenthompson4912 Several of the Valjean's aren't actually from the country they represent but they appeared in a production in that country. The other one I remember is Jeff Leyton (Ireland)who is actually from Scotland.

There isn't actually an Englishman here. Colm Wilkinson, who's representing Britain, because he originated the role on the West End, is Irish.
