Today's review covers Yuusha oh GaoGaiGar, the most popular Yuusha entry. It's easily the most beautiful super robot anime I've ever seen, filled to the brim with excitement and amazing transformations, but it's not quite perfect.

GaoGaiGar's main strengths is how.... different it feels from the other Yuusha anime, and in fact against most Super Robot anime in general. The battles as mentioned is one of the series' stronger points, since they emphasize strategy and tactics into the mix, where logic and reason are major components of how they defeat the enemy instead of just increasingly more powerful weapons; and the enemies in turn are quick to adapt, sometimes the enemies even GGG's own gadgets against them. Though GaoGaiGar isn't devoid of the occasional asspull, at least they make it entertaining when they do. GaoGaiGar also eschews many of the old Yuusha tropes like the sword finisher, the "Great" ultimate mech, and others, in favor of sticking to an established theme for the GGG machines, especially GaoGaiGar itself which despite having the least amount of weapons and gimmicks certainly packs the most punch and truly sells its thematic combination of destruction and protection. There's also the fact that in terms of action, GaoGaiGar is not only better animated than many of its predecessors in the Yuusha series, they're also imbued with a power and weight that is often lacking in many mecha anime, which culminates in the over-the-top hotblooded attitude that most of the cast has, which is something which imo Gurren Lagann definitely took inspiration from.

Guy is a cyborg, not an android. Commander Data would be so disappointed in my mixup. Also, here's the bonus GGG material. Enjoy! pyroxenescanning.wordpress.com/hakaiou-toc/

I can agree that the cast the cast aren't the most complex, they're lovable, and an example of how to have interesting flat character. Having said that from what seen of J-Decker in 30, the Brave Police Robos have more developed characters than the 3G Braves.I can see where coming from, even as someone who has only seen about 10 ep of each Brave aside GGG and Mightgaine, you often go into the most popular entry of a franchise and hear so much good things about it, especially after being massively impressed by a previous entry, only to be let down or not as impressed when finally got to it. Having said that, as Strike Noir stated, GGG's main strength seems to be in it's variety of equipment that aren't just another big gun or ultimate sword. Maybe it's not strong in plot or character, but it could excel in the technical side of things. I showed it to two friends and both came to the same consensus about Za Power, it being totally deus ex machina that was outside 3G's control, especially when the prior battles like with EI-01 and Combined Primeval were won with the long foreshadowed Projectile X and the Gatling Driver Solitary Wave Projectile. Then there's the multipurpose use of the tools. Dividing Driver and Gatling Driver were used in a few ways beyond a safe battle area, such as when had to dive into the ocean, stop that Railcannon shell by using it to slow the shell, etc. The dimension pliers acting as a makeshift tongs for Goldion Hammer, It's that kinda thing were people call GGG proto Gurren Lagann, in way, it's the antithesis as the answer not blow it up harder, but blow it up smarter, though Final and Hakaioh are more Gurren Lagann proto. Not saying past Braves didn't do any logic or tactical approach, if recall, J-Decker was methodical in gradually shooting down that structure that was in space which makes sense as both 3G and the Brave Police are actual government funded organizations rather than either space aliens of Exkaiser/Fighbird, Earth Spirits like Da-Garn, Vigilantes like Mighgaine, cool adventure bots like Goldran or sentai like Dagown. Itt's definitely more something that benefits from a rewatch or two as you pick up a the little technical aspects and details in it,

I can think of a few reasons why GaoGaiGar is the most popular PROBABLY because of its... 1. Soundtrack 2. Creative and BEAUTIFUL appearances/combination sequences 3. Famous attacks like Broken Magnum/Phantom, Protect Shade/Wall, Hell and Heaven, etc. 4. Humongous eye candy for fight scenes and action 5. Unforgettable weapons/tools like the dividing driver and, of course, GoldyMarg/Goldion Hammer. 6. A slew of attraction for the famous Hikari Ni Nare/Hammer Hell and Heaven finisher 7. The grandiose reveal of the Yuusha-Ou's true form: the strongest destruction god, Genesic GaoGaiGar 8. Intensity, maturity, and fanservice of GaoGaiGar FINAL 9. Amazing voice talent 10. TOYS! (I got the Soul of Chogokin GX-68 GaoGaiGar toy during summer break this year) I think it's because of these 10 reasons that GaoGaiGar is a very popular Brave entry. In fact, it's also quite well-known in mecha anime pop culture. I mean, Galaxy Convoy (Cybertron Optimus Prime) and some other transformers like Hot Shot/Exillion, Fire Convoy, and twins Jetfire and Jetstorm from TFA were all based on the robots that made GaoGaiGar famous. IMO, Gurren Lagann should NOT be GaoGaiGar's successor. That title belongs to Galaxy Convoy/Unicron Trilogy/Cybertron Optimus Prime

The King of Braves GaoGaiGar is one of those classic mecha anime that people should at least check out once. This reminds me. GBR-01 GaoGaiGar is getting a Real Grade release along with a P-Bandai release for RG GMX-GH101 GoldyMarg.

It does certainly look nice, I find TV Anime by the late 90s had really nailed the cel paint down well. A lot of shows have very bold colours, as opposed to the more washed out look a lot of older TV Anime has.

The grand glorious gathering TV thing was made to fill in timeslots supposedly since those are super valuable and it was to make the connections between the 2 series more overt for the upcoming planned project Z which… took a long time to get brought out. There’s a 3rd in the same universe though like Betterman it’s hard to see any connections which is Brigadoon Marin to Melan. It’s made by the same writer and character designer duo of Betterman and GaoGaiGar

Great vid man! I just found your channel from coming across your excellent 6 year old LOGH review and am pretty stunned at how different you look. The 3 piece suit was iconic! The quality is still excellent though and it seems like you’ve honed your craft over the years. Would you ever consider reviewing the new LOGH: Die Neue series? I loved your analysis on the original and think your insight into it would make for an excellent video covering its remake.

I wouldn’t say it’s a direct connection. I looked at the staff and the people at the tip of the creative totem pole worked very minor positions in the Yuusha series, so I’d say it’s a minor connection. Still episode 1 was pretty good, looking forward for more

This was a good review, but i have to heavily disagree on your thoughts on the second half. In my opinion, this is when the show finally started getting interesting. The plot was actually progressing, fights became more engaging and were allot more intense, the stakes were raised much higher, and we were getting allot of neat answers and plenty of lore in the show. Thats not to say the first half was bad, but it just felt like a drag for me because I’m personally just not a fan of episodic monster of the week style shows. Thats not to say i hate it in general, and i understand why its done. But for someone like me who had to binge watch the show, it just felt like a complete drag. Yes i took multiple breaks between my viewing, and yes i am aware that show like this were simply not made to be binge watched in one sitting, you’re supposed to watch the show in small chunks so you wont get sick of it. Basically the equivalent of eating 10 pieces of cake. One or two slices is fine, but anything more than that and you’ll be sick for the rest of the day. But still, once i got to second half, everything began to step up. Yeah we still got some monster of the week stuff, but nowhere near as much as in the first half. Even the villains i felt were more interesting. Sure the Zonders in the first half had more memorable designs, but once the show is done with them they’re just completely forgotten about and the Primevals fully take over, making me wonder what was even the point of having them be the main antagonists for the longest time if they were just gonna be abandoned once the new villains came around? The only one of them that gets any semblance of a character arc being Pizza, who later becomes Soldato J, but thats really it. But thats it really, the others are just never mentioned or heard from again once they’re defeated. And another thing, i really wish the dub continued. I get that the dub wasn’t finished because the DVDs didn’t seem as much as they wanted to but………. Come on if you’re gonna dub a show, either dub the whole thing or don’t bother dubbing it at all. Especially if the dub is gonna be exclusive to DVDs. As for the OVA, my biggest gripe would have to be the fan service. Seriously, we did not need to see so many gratuitous ass and panties shots. Especially the dominatrix bee lady. And lets not even talk about her since one of her scenes is so very infamous and not for the right reason. So yeah id still give it an 8/10 but not for the reasons you stated in the review

This you might find hilarious, but I learned of this show a few days ago from Anime World Order podcast (a source I trust, seeing how they are almost always correct about stuff), and they had the opposite opinion from you (later half is better). I will still watch it no matter what, I have a good feeling about this.

Great review Bob. I personally feel the opposite, where the second half was even more engaging for me, just because it felt like the show had left its monster of the week format for a more serialized story (plus Soldato J is just such a good character imo). Not to say the first half was bad, not at all, it just really picked up for me in the second half. The original FINAL ova is great imo, but yeah Grand Glorious Gathering definitely was only made to remind audiences "hey, this is in the same universe as Betterman". But hey the opening for that version is godlike so I can't complain.

Honestly the Betterman connection felt flimsy at best, even in the sequel manga Hakai-Oh GaoGaiGar vs Betterman. Betterman is just too disparate of a story from GaoGaiGar that combining the both of them feels really disjointed.

It's been a while since you made a vid, I was starting to miss you since you used to upload a vid everyday. You are the only person that talks about anime I even watch now. This show is weird for me. It was reccommended to me by a dude I had a falling out with back in 2018 and he recommended this show to me after I dogmatically attacked My Hero Academia for how popular the latter was at the time. I didn't even know there was a franchise called "Yuusha" at that point and this series was up on KZbin as well. Space Runaway Ideon was up on YT back then too. I feel like I may have to watch the other stuff before jumping into this one, but mecha anime tend to be long running franchises with lots of episodes in each series too. There's so much mecha anime that going to a con a few weeks ago seeing a bunch of military dudes go into detail as to why actual mechs would never be used in actual warfare was interesting. I rambled enough lol.
