I remember when I first started learning, I was crazy enough to ask a half-Japanese friend if I could join her Japanese class for Japanese people...taught all in Japanese. No joke, I didn't understand ANYTHING the teacher was saying and everything had to be translated for me. I felt like a meiwaku TAT. The first class I went to I came out crying...yet that was probably the best decision I made. I took off and learnt Japanese, in Japanese. That's probably the best advice I can give :)

@PsyIn2D Hi! Check online, I'm not sure if you have a Windows PC or a Mac, but it's possible to input Japanese on a regular QWERTY keyboard simply by changing your settings. I'm not sure of the details, since I bought my laptop in Japan, so go check google for exact instructions how to do it!

Thanks so much for this. I'm thinking about studying Linguistics and Languages in University, and sometimes I just feel super bogged down with all the people saying, 'You'll never learn a language at your age! You can't learn to be fluent after the age of *whatever*' So you're a pretty big inspiration!

Great video! I am lucky to be taking Japanese language classes at my university, the 4 day a week class schedule keeps me constantly learning (whether I "feel" like it or not) and it's improved my Japanese immensely. Still a beginner, but moving forward!

thanks for the tips. I'm learning Japanese, but only because I'm currently living in Japan. In two months, my Japanese has improved immensely. Of course, it's not easy. I study for 1-2 hours every day, and on days when I 'm tired, atleast 15-30 minutes. Repition really does work. You must have a routine! I make sure to study two times a day. Once when I wake up and once before I go to sleep. These are the best times to learn, I heard from an English learner here.

Wow... You've just inspired me to write a blog post about my secret to my Japanese success. When I first started Japanese classes in high school, people thought I used Rosetta Stone, but it's only because I had studied long before high school. And now, I'm learning Russian too. This video was great, and congrats on 100 videos!

I moved to Miami about 4 years ago. Living in the States really pushed me to get better at English. I never felt insulted when people criticized my accent or words. Instead, I encouraged everybody around me to feel free to correct me. It helped tremendously! In the end I started a blog to improve my writing as well. Much like life, it's an eternal learning process. I still have much to learn. :]

I'm currently studying Japanese at college and I agree that it does help to gain friends that speak the language you want to learn. I have conversations and I hang out with some of our Japanese exchange students which not only helps their English but my Japanese as well.

On the side an advertisement keeps showing for the pimsleurapproach. I'm actually using that. My local library has a copy. Best way I have tried so far. About 40 minutes a day just learning to speak without being distracted with kanji. My retention has been close to 100% thanks to each lesson challenging me on what was previously learned as well as new things. I will learn kanji later when I have finished learning what the words mean. This is how we were taught our native language.
I started learning Japanese early September this year, and going to nights courses etc, I agree that you have to totally immerse and surround yourself with it if you want it to sink in....I'm struggling with retaining a lot of what I learn at the moment....But i'll hang in there, as I'm really enjoying it! Hopefully things will ease up eventually............the trip to japan next year :) Great vids by the way, congrats on the big 100!

Hello! Ok,so I have been in love with Japan and everything related to it ever since I was 12. I don't really know why,I probably never will, but it's just that I have always been attracted to this other kind of world One of my dreams would be to at least get to visit Japan,if living there would be impossible for me I am currently studying Japanese and although I am only at the beginning, your videos have helped me so much not only for the language, but to also understand their world Thank you lots!

I think learning any language is valid as long as you find it interesting. Linguistically Japanese (like a lot of Asian languages) is so different from the Germanic and Romantic languages we are used to, and thus makes for a bigger challenge. However, spending money on learning a language is in my opinion only worth it if it looks like it might be worth it in the future, if that makes sense. And honestly wanting to learn it to be able to enjoy its culture is to me as valid a reason as any other.

I have taken German, French, Japanese, and am now taking Mandarin Chinese. The one thing I've really noticed helped me while I was NOT constantly exposed to the language was audio files. Instead of listening to music in the car, I'd listen to mp3 files made by NATIVE speakers (keyword) that taught me basic phrases then more advanced. Also, if you can find a dictionary made by NATIVES that translates into business English (specifically), you can really learn a lot about how the language works.
I was actually scared to click on this video because the last one you made, made me feel bad about myself lol Anyways, thanks for the videos and keep making more vlogs!

I have studied Japanese for about a year now. i learn best with book work mixed with listening and doing. For those of you who are like me, i would suggest Living Language. Living language is a book that you can right in. it teaches you usefull vocabulary, and the sentance structure and grammer. along with the written language too! they have CDs that you can listen to and learn how to speak and listen in japanese. They also have a website with interactive games to help you remember! it works:)

I'm a German and Spanish major and have spent some time in Japan and Korea when I was younger. My advice would be to not get discouraged. I still have trouble with this because your entire confidence can be blown by someone pointing out you pronounced something wrong or your grammar was incorrect. Be content with what you did right and embrace correction. Perfection may never happen, but you can get to the point where know one will notice because NO one is perfect. :)

Thank you~ You inspired me again. I'm in that awkward point that every language learner comes to that feels like you aren't getting anywhere. You know, when you aren't a beginner, but can't exactly form perfect sentences yet. I'm also pretty bad at reading and writing, but I will work hard to change that! For the songs, I got a hold of learning a bit of Japanese from music such as VOCALOiD, or show openings. I learned another good portion of the Japanese I can remember from watching drama's and anime. As for characters, I've been trying to study some of the basic charts. I use multiple language programs online and on some of the other electronic devices I know. I practically submerge myself in the culture everyday. Especially with music. I hope to one day move to Japan myself and get a job there.

@Natashakiable18 That's great! It's awesome to practice with friends. I'm really competitive, so I hate when someone is better at something than I am-- when I study with friends, it always inspires me to make sure I'm at the top of my game.

the best way to learn is... joining a language school and use japanese while you speak with your friends or mates(from L-School) just try to SAY it... even if it´s wrong. next time you know you were wrong. you can also watch japanese anime without sound just subtitles (that was one thing that worked 4 me)

I do agree with the music thing, I've learned a few phrases in Italian because of a song, I'll probably never have a need for "Mani grandi" which means "Big Hands" or any of the other words, there was also a Japanese song that I listen to that taught me some words, but I don't remember the meaning... I think lang-8 is a very good site!My husband uses it for French. But I don't think japanese songs is a great support because the grammar and construction of sentences is different especially in pop songs XD(I agree with the karaoke part tough) Movies, dramas, animations of quality are better to learn tons of vocabs and grammar sturctures. Especially when you study for JLPT. Congratulations on your 100 vid!

OMG, great minds think alike! I told other people this too. I was just in Japan 2 weeks ago doing this at lounges, slaying a lot of it and being laughed at, but hey, that's half the fun. Today I was at the Ren Faire singing Irish Drinking Songs... in English. Much more in my comfort zone.
