The downfall of Japanese Semiconductor was due to three factors: Plaza accord (1985) is the more well-known factor. The lesser-known, but in my view is the more impactful one, is the 1986 Semiconductor Agreement, where Japan had to 1. implement a price floor for memory chips outside of Japan (making it less competitive), and 2. open up Japan domestic market to foreign competitors (at least 20%). Since Japan was selling the memory chips at higher cost (thus higher profit) in Japan while lower cost elsewhere, these two measures ensure Japan loses its pricing edge elsewhere, and unable to reap as much profit as before to finance its R&D. The third one is: US grooming S Korea and Taiwan in semiconductor manufacturing to compete with Japan.

Filled with lies. Japan continued to manufacture semiconductors until the 2000s

@@MrBlueoasis yes there was a decline, but 20 years after the Plaza Accord and the Semiconductor act. Not sure about decline in quality, though.

广场协议的内容根本就不是美国打压限制日本的芯片制造和价格!而是要求日圆和马克升值,让美元贬值,减轻美国庞大的赤字!《广场协议》(英语:Announcement of The Ministers of Finance and Central Bank Governors of France, Germany, Japan, The United Kingdom, and The United States,简称Plaza Accord)是美国、日本、英国、法国及德国5个工业发达国家财政部长和央行行长于美国纽约的广场饭店会晤后,在1985年9月22日签署的协议。目的在联合干预外汇市场,使美元对日圆及德国马克等主要货币有秩序性地贬值,以解决美国巨额贸易赤字。

First of all, Japan's chip forte in the 80's was DRAM, which since then have rapidly become a commodity. Japan had no logic chip manufacturing... Thus no CPU, and associated computer industry. Yeah, they missed the entire 90's IT revolution. So much so they are still using faxes! Also, their entire work culture seemed to be stuck in the manufacturing era. There was none of the energy the IT and software industry need.

They didn't develop a lot of CPU production because DRAM was profitable, not because of USA pressure.

@@darshanchungDRAM as indeed the money maker in the 80's. The lack of Japanese products in logic process is indeed not related to US pressure... There was no money in logic process back then. Well, the rest is history...
