I bought a pair of these about seven years ago on sale for use in a music-only 2.2 stereo rig. They sound great to me running w/dual 8” subwoofers. Good imaging and clear detailed sound quality. Excellent on female vocals imo. They are well-designed & built. I wouldn’t pay $600, but a bargain @ $300. I felt the “Quality” of the build when I was unboxing the Q-100’s. Front-ported and comes w/port plugs. Good value.

I've owned both, the q100 and q300. I prefer the q100s. They sound more balanced and if you use a sub, there's no advantage to having the 300s. The 100s are very close to the elac ub5.

Have you tried the JBL LSR305 against the Q100?
@ExplorerBob7 жыл бұрын
The q100 have been superceded by the q150. They work best in a 2.1 setup. These speakers have a beautiful mid-range, vocals and imaging. The q300 has deeper bass but is more susceptible to cone break-up. It's more noticeable with the q900's. The LS50 is a 5.25" design and there is no LS model based on 6" woofers.

I have a pair of Black Q100's. I was actually disappointed in their sound compared to my DIY Open baffle active crossover-ed speakers. I finally decided to go true active with My Q100's by removing the tweeter capacitor and soldering a jumper wire in in place of it. I also De-soldered the red wire coming from the woofer, from the PCB board and re-soldered it on the the solder side of the board to the input wire there by bypassing the inductor coil going to the Mid-Woofer and making sure to unscrew the jumper knobs on loudspeaker input terminals. I am using a Audio Control DXS Digital 24db per octave car crossover at 2500 Hz between the woofer and tweeter and 280 Hz between my Hi Vi W10 woofers. WOW! What a difference. This put these at a whole new level. Now I love the sound of the Q100's. I tried using the DXS active crossover with the Q100 crossover components in the circuit but was not satisfied with the results. I am powering these with 2 Yamaha DSP A1 amplifiers. The DSP A1 amplifiers have the jumpers on the Pre-amp outputs to the Main and Center amp inputs allowing the ability to put the active crossover in that circuit. I use one Yamaha DSP A1 as the control Pre-amp using the Pre-amp outputs to go to the DXS crossover inputs. I have been doing active crossover setups for more than 30 years as the sound and performance is much better as long as you use a decent active crossover and you have the ability to make the proper adjustments. The Audio Control DXS only requires only 12 volts and dras only 250 milli-amps of current.. I am powering it with a 120Vac to to 12Vdc 1.5 amp Wall Wart power supply. This DXS crossover has a true 120db signal to noise level and is capable of more than 5 volts output. Of all the many different crossovers I have used over the years, I like the performance of DXS the best and it is very easy to program the many crossover points by simply pressing a couple of buttons. Having a 24db active crossover slope rather than the 6db passive crossover slope in the Q100's greatly improve the sound quality and power handling of these Q100's Tweeter and Mid-Woofer. The Q100 tweeter must be very well made to be able to be crossed over at 2500 Hz with such a gentle 6db slope. The difference from using the 24db slope and the 6db slope is night and day. These Q100's play so much louder and cleaner with more detail than I could have imagined.

Thanks for reviewing the Q100's, they are one of my favourite bookshelf speakers, even over my B&W's, The imaging as you say is amazingly accurate, the coaxial driver really helps keep you feeling the imaging and soundstage even when you're outside the sweetspot, one thing I will say is, yes these are front ported speakers, but I've found they still don't like being shoved right up against a wall, it does tend to make the bass a little bloated, the same goes for when you just plonk them on a desk without any stand or isolation, I don't think they make the best 'monitors' for audio production, or analytical listening, but they are very fun to listen too, smooth, but still quite resolved. I know you may not believe in burnin but now and again I come across a headphone or speaker where it really seems to make a difference, the Q100's definitely benefit from a good 60 hours of playing music at a moderate volume, it helps smooth off the tweeter a little and they also sound more balanced. Does this speaker have a standout negative? imo yes, on some types of music, opera, and piano in particular, they can suffer from a slight metallic sounding distortion at particular octaves, I'm not sure why this is, I've heard on two sets now. If you can get these speakers in a sale I honestly don't think they can be beat 'for the price'.

It's interesting reading your opinion after watching GR Research's recent video on upgrading these speakers. When he talks about one of the issues with the crossover in this speaker, he mentioned that there would be an audible issue with pianos. Keen ears 👍

I'm running a set of KEF Q100 powered by a Denon AVR-X1300W for my desk setup. I went through so many speakers on my desk till I ended up with this setup. I started with the Pioneer SP-BS22, moved to the BiC FH-65B, then to the JBL 305s, then finally moved to the Q100s. Also went through almost as many amps, every Tamp I tried had a twitter hiss that I found very unpleasant. The Q100s are the best sounding thing to me that I've tried so far. It's the first setup that I've had on my desk that doesn't leave me wanting more (outside of adding a sub of course). I play mostly games and watch movies with them and they are amazing. Makes me want to look into the Tower versions for my home theater setup, have the HTD Level 3s for my HT now and while I like them they sure are ugly next to the KEF speakers

How would you describe if you had to compare the JBL 305's with the Q100's? I'm buying new speakers for my Yamaha RX-V781 AVR (which accepts both passive and active speakers combined) and I'm torn between these two, especially as I do not have the opportunity to audition them.

Keeping in mind the size and price of the Q100, they perform admirably and I hear very little that's wrong with them. A few things could be a little better; their tweeter is decent but it's no AMT or ribbon in terms of speed and clarity, and by necessity (to fit within the woofer coil former) it needs to be a bit smaller than optimal but it does pretty decently. The Q100s sound better than the Sony Core bookshelves, which already ain't bad for the price paid, but that's just as you'd want them to. The next bookshelf speaker I'd like to get my hands on for comparison is the UB5. But really good two-way sound doesn't start at these price points. I have a set of Thiel CS1.7 and they are superb two-way speakers, with indistinguishable crossover transition and unified voicing, and high technology drivers that give a really nicely dynamic sound. The only thing they lack is true deep bass, and for that you need a 3-way speaker because mid-woofers won't shove enough air to give you that true deep bass unless they fall apart in the midrange while doing so.

KEF are not show off sound, I.e massive bass and cheap treble, therefore in a show against other speakers they appear inferior. However, give them a chance by living with them, then you notice these are enjoyable good speakers. These are cheap KEF’s to be fair, and are very slightly harsh IMO, spend time with the LS50’s and you’ll really notice the sheer musicality and excellent balance! BTW, Manningsgems on eBay in the U.K. are selling and shipping worldwide the Q300 at the cheapest around new, but they are the last pair, I enquired and they said it’s unlikely they will be getting any more. KEFs are like a poet at a rap festival, everyone else is loud, shouting, dissing, busing off rhymes...take them away from all that, have a glass of 🍷 wine, and let them reiterate their sweet poetry to you. then you’ll get it, holographic imaging, mellow ample bass, open natural voices, perfection! Excellent review Sir, 👍

What I noticed is they are rough. Shrilly you might say. They will be cranking along resonating a good sound and then a note hits and it's just terrible. I like a variety of different sounds including dynaudio, B&W, morel, Martin Logan so it's not that I have a really finicky preference and have to hear things a certain way. The problem I have with the Q100 is when you play EDM or even alternative like say Depeche Mode you get some really terrible sounds coming out of these things at very random times. It's a small speaker that needs a good deal of space to tone down a little which is yet another issue. Absolutely terrible near field monitor even though a coaxial in theory should be good at that. If someone really has only $300 to spend on speakers I would probably tell them to go look for a used B&W 601 S3. In my opinion they absolutely put these q100s to shame and the larger 602 s3 bookshelf really will
@matt881697 жыл бұрын
Random terrible noises could very well be clipping that is occurring at the level of the recording. Static/pop/tearing. When you are listening to the real hifi stuff, or even lo-fi stuff, it sounds like you're killing a tweeter or crossover when in reality it is the crappy ass compressed music ruining the experience. True story. Been there.

I'm glad to see you review and like these. I watched a ton of your vids in my learning about speakers, and eventually ran across reviews of the Q1/300 being a league above on the sound image and listenability anything under $500. Snagged 'em at $400 just before the new Q1/350's came out (which have the magnet grill and are no longer are front firing and upgrades inside) I am so happy with them. They are amazing for both music and movies. I felt they were weak at first, and had to mess with levels, but once dialed in they are great. They don't have big low end punch and really benefit from a sub.. but absolute crystal clarity high and mid's. Will add a center, but it's going be something wall mounted (their T series perhaps?).. their Q650 center is too massive a beast a wall mounted 55" TV. It's nice to feel validated by your good taste Zeos... I got a SVS P-1000 per your SVS recommendations. For a small room it just unreal.

I will answer myself maybe will be important to someone. Definitly ELAC are better speakers. KEF IQ100 are too bright and a bit fatigue similar to Klipsch. They are super clean right, but too much for my taste, specially if someone use them nearfield. ELAC are more neutral and sound perfect, also ELAC have much better kick on bass. I only add a bit treble +2dB and sound amazing with Loxjie A30. KEF IQ100 I will return. Oh and I use them on nearfiled on comupter desk. ELAC sound similar to Sennheiser HD600 headphones. So I do not know why Zeos do not like them much, maybe he had worse day during review them :)

These q100 speakers depends on the amplification. I had the Klipsch R-51m and replaced them with these. I own the q100 and q150 and the 100 is not nearly as bright as the Klipsch and digs deeper in the lows. However the caveat is Both the 100 and 150 and benefit from quality amps

Be careful with your loudy tendencies if you get the LS50s in - the cones are a softer metal. There's a heap of photos of distorted LS50 drivers out there from people who gave them a bit too much juice. Also, having owned the Q300s and now the Q700s, I'd have to say that while they /can/ be used with a receiver, they sound a lot snapper with more headroom (the Q700s specify a max 150w @ 8 ohms, and I'm driving them with a 200w Rotel). They seem to love power. The Qs are nominally rated at 8 ohms, but tests seem to suggest it's more like 4 ohms and they just called it 8 to avoid scaring casual listeners off.

I ended up pairing the q400 subwoofer with kef LS50s for my computer near-field desktop. Sounds amazing for music hands down. I wouldn't use the sub woofer for home theater as it only hits 28hz, it's more of a musical sub. I was curious to try these after I listened to this review. So I ordered a pair and right away I was blown away by the pin-point imaging and by how they detail. But it stopped there. They totally lack body below 300hz, and sound boxy when bass/lower-mid gets loud (+-1octave around piano middle C). They etch so much in mids and up that they feel loud and fatiguing. In a low cost home movie theatre, I can see them if you don't care crossing them over to sub at about 250Hz if that's possible. in brief, I would not pay $300 for them. I don't know how much better the new Q150s are; if the Q150s are the R100s with lower quality cabinetry, then the sticker price $550 would make sense.

Interesting that you would review this at the end of its product life cycle! It's been replace by the Q150 & KEF is closing them out. The $299 price is nothing special as they offer them directly for this price a couple of times every year. That being said they are good speakers offering good bass for their size & tons on detail. I've own a pair for a couple of years & my opinion of them is that they excel as speakers for music playback. They fall short as multimedia speakers. I also have a pair of Klipsch RP-160M's & they run circles around the Q100's when it comes to being a dual application speaker. The Q100's still get the nod in a music only setup especially when used for acoustic music like jazz or classical. They tend to be brutally honest & are very revealing. A bad or bright recording is not going to sound flattering.

Yep, your review of these seem to mirror my personal experience having owned them for a couple years myself quite well! I wouldn't take the Q300 over these though; They are a bit more of an oddball and the 3-way design just doesn't seem to work as well as the 2-way design of these. The Q100 thus is more balanced and better overall if you ask me. Plus they are cheaper. Kinda bad analogy but I suppose the Q100 vs Q300 could be compared to the M40X and M50X where the Q100 is the M40X's; Both cheaper and arguably better.

I have the Q300s and have had them since around launch, initially thought this was those from the thumb lol. Advice Please. Gear Polk RTI A9 fronts Marantz AV7702 Pre Tuner Emotiva XPA-5 Gen1 5 channel true 200 watt per channel (all channels driven) Rears? Now the question. Would these be better than the old school Klipsch RF3 II that I have currently. Size not an issue. But like the look of the Kefs. Or could you recommend something I could replace the RF3's with? Or should I just be happy with them?

I'm looking for a new set of tower speakers, debating from Elac F5 F6, Kplisch RP 260, or the SVS none primes. Which ones would you recommend? Mostly for watching movies, planning on a 7.1 or 7.2 setup in the near future

Ya I have the full surround q300 mains, q100 rear and 600 center sunfire 8" sub got all for the price of the price of 1 pair of r100's.

I have these KEF's running in 2.1 with a sub through an old Onkyo receiver, would there be any benefit in upgrading to a better amplifier such as the Emotiva A-100 you reviewed a while ago? I still would like to make use of the sub. Is there a way to use a stereo receiver like the A-100 with a sub and still maintain the volume control?

I need to drastically downsize and simply don't have the room for any subwoofer of a respectable size. I'm mostly music but some movies, and yeah, I'm probably a "loudy". $500 to spend on a 2.0 bookshelf sized pair. Elac B6, Q100, or? Thanks in advance!

I got these as my first speakers and I love them. I'm powering them with pretty much the cheapest ok amp you can get, s.m.s.l sa-36a pro, and they get more than loud enough. What I'm wondering is would I be able to get noticeably more out of these with a more expensive amp?
@user-ch5ij5yd2g7 жыл бұрын
Those tiny integrated amps usually have a bad noise floor and you can hear a hiss. Any decent receiver should be an upgrade
@lelionmusic7 жыл бұрын
Really? I seriously can't hear any white noise at all even when I turn the volume to max. The sound goes through a focusrite scarlett 2i2 if that matters

New to audio. Would you recommend getting these for a desktop PC or should I just go with jbl lsr305 since I guess from what I've read around I can't go wrong with those?

I run my Q100 with plugs in a low tech non-HPF with a sub. I agree they image super easy, but they do sound a bit muddy/smeary, compared to my main speakers Sierra2. For their price I love them.

Hi! Tanks for a great review. How do you guys think that kef q150 in a living room 16*20 ft. Are they to small?

I'm a Loudy. Definitely.

Do the windows directly behind the speakers affect the sound whatsoever? I’ve read that windows tend to muddy things up but I’m not 100% sure.

matthew. I wouldnt say that they do because they are front ported.

I would say... Review PSB T3, GoldenEar (anything), Focal Sopra, B&W 800 D3 series, and others... EXPENSIVE I know. But maybe they can lend them to you, like they do to Stereophile, or other outlets. Just a thought.

Zeos.. would they sound good in a 10x13 ft (3x4m )room on a desk (near field) or could be too boomy in your opinion? thanks.

Hey Z have you ever considered reviewing a subwoofer like the HSU vtf15h gen 2? I've been looking at that for my home theatre for movies like inception and interstellar with the awesome bass in those amazing tracks, cause that's a pretty highly rated sub that goes down to 16 hz. Put it with good speakers that just don't have the sub power and I think you'd be pretty set, but they're gigantic and heavy so I'd understand if you didn't review subs in general.

You mentioned all bookshelf speakers still requiring a sub. Do you often run your Buchardt S300's with a sub? It seems like the low end on those are insane-o
@ZE0SPantera7 жыл бұрын
I do not. But I am a purist. A sub would still bring something extra to the party.
