I can tell zendaya deep down likes him but is just good at holding it all in because she knows she’ll get more shit than zac does if people find out she likes him- if you see whenever zac quite open and publicly calls her amazing or compliments her in anyway she literally acts like she hasn’t even heard it she doesn’t seem even slightly phased by it now this would suggest one of two things that either she really does not care about this man and doesn’t want him to get the wrong impression off her so purposely goes out of her way to show him no receptive emotion back- which would draw up the question of why he would continue to compliment her in the first place if she was entertaining it in no evident way at all? This means she must entertain it just off camera and by entertain I do just mean saying thanks and complimenting him back in that ‘little more than friends’ way he does to her. I figured it was this second option more than the first because at 1:19 you can see that when he is evidently laughing because she just said something awkward that she 100% herself knows hit a nerve in some way either they have an inside joke about it or they both know it’s not true either way zac would not react like that if there was nothing behind the ‘our.. our... our...friendship.’ Now the way she literally was not phased AT ALL she did not even flinch a muscle in her face shows she is very very publicity trained and this emulates her reaction to every other time zac compliments her or anything else just acting like she hasn’t quite noticed that he’s trying to compliment her and takes it on the chin just with a ‘oh thanks’. As to not give the public’s preeing eyes anything to latch onto. I hope this made sense to some of you, it’s only evident at 1:19 on that she really is good at acting like nothing just happened and there isn’t something deeper underneath which is what we see in most interviews between her and zac. She probably does like him and just has to pretend she doesn’t to not get a negative reputation she inevitably will because of not only their age gap but also because of how loved zac is by his huge fan base. Gender roles also determine that it’s okay and even ‘cute’ for zac to like zendaya but if zendaya is shown to be receptive or to actually be the one who ‘likes’ him she’ll be labelled as a fangirl, unprofessional and generally hated upon. This is not a good move publicity wise for someone who is on the brink of stardom.

This is an interesting theory and you've put a lot of thought into it. Personally I think Zac is just a very complimentary person, which is part of why people love him so much (I've only recently become a fan so I can't speak for many other interviews across his career to either compare or refute this). I don't know that Zendaya likes him in a 'more than friends' way though, I think they're both just incredibly hard workers who absolutely loved working on this particular project and as she's said in other interviews, there's certain things they experienced during the filming process that only they can relate to. I think they definitely bonded during the filming and rehearsals, but I don't see anything more than sheer professionalism when she's labelling their friendship. It would be hard to define what kind of relationship that they had after working so closely together and the level of trust that they needed to have with each other when holding onto the ropes in the air with no nets or harnesses if I remember correctly. It's so much more than any typical action or romance scene. You can also see in other interviews, like when Zendaya makes the face after saying her dad wanted her to be the first woman in NBA or whatever, and Zac did a similar laugh/expression because it was a funny moment. I think on a personal level, he's incredibly nerdy in comparison to her, which is something she's mentioned before, so I think the bottom line of it comes down to her showing professional courtesy to him, rather than there being something going on behind the scenes that she's brushing off or trying to hide so she's not perceived a certain way. She mentioned in an interview that she didn't have posters of him on her walls or anything from the HSM era, so I think it's more that they have mutual appreciation for each others skills/talents and their respective careers. But also, I wouldn't say Zendaya is on the brink of stardom. She's got a solid working history behind her and from last check, more instagram followers than Zac does. She may not be as well known as Zac, but it also depends on who you ask and what generation they're from. I'm not sure if that's what you were saying or if I completely misunderstood you, but that's my take on it anyway. 😊
