I have a school plagarism story. So, in some English class or another, for one singular class session, the teacher gave us logins for some internet-based auto-grading essay thing. Like, it'd give you a prompt, you write out an essay on it, and it would be auto-graded. This is somewhere 2009-2010-ish, so obviously the autograding is absolute shit and means nothing. Anywho, I got a prompt that was basically "write a report on a book you liked." Fuck it. I had been reading the "Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" light novels, so I wrote about them, something I highly doubt anybody else in this tiny school of 285 people total across all grades had read. The program gives me a perfect score. I get called in to detention later. Turns out, another kid had copied my essay on, of all things, "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" light novels, changed a few words, and thought he wouldn't get caught. Problem was, the teacher, she couldn't conceive of a world where I had nothing to do with this. What happened next was a lot of me sitting there getting more and more annoyed, and adamantly saying I had nothing to do with this; while the teacher got more and more annoyed because of course she could tell a paper about some dude named "Kyon" had been copied; as well as the guy that copied my paper feeling more and more guilty. Eventually, he caved and admitted he copied me and I had nothing to do with it. "How did you copy him without him being involved?" What do you mean how did he copy me?! You gave us standardized logins and passwords based on our names! 😂
@ilvanezzo
@ilvanezzo Жыл бұрын
Should have made that kid explain the Haruhiverse timeline lol Also props for the choice of topic. One time I got a passing grade for an assignment I did not prepare for by rambling about Rumiko Takahashi's Ranma 1/2, fun times

Yeah, standardised usernames, that's one thing. Standardizing passwords though is asking for trouble. I remember my old school's username format all these years later. It was a number (For my year it was 96, the year after us got 97, etc. flipping back to 00 by the time we'd finished at the school) our surname, and our first initial. If two usernames were identical up to that point, they would add more letters from the first name until they stopped matching. So a kid in my year named John Brown would have gotten '96brownj'.

“‘Woah dude!’ Ohhhhhhhh I’ve only just BEGUN to pull the thread on this sweater, friends! You would think, in a game where there were only two possible correct choices, that one would STUMBLE into the right answer every so often, wouldn’t you? In fact, the probability of never guessing right in the full game is a statistical wonder, and yet, here we are. Introduced at the top of the game as a champion, what do you think that means? Icarus, flying too close to the sun. But it seems Daedalus, our master crafter over here, HAD SOME WAX WINGS OF HIS OWN, DIDN’T HE? Wanted to see his son fall. Fall from the sky. OH, HOW *CLOSE* TO THE SUN HE FLEW! WELL I’M NOT HAVING IT! I SOLVED YOUR LABYRINTH, PUZZLEMASTER! The Minotaur’s escaped, and you’re gonna get the HORNS, buddy!” … “That was an incredible monologue.
