So, I haven't watched season 2 yet, but I came across this video and just had to watch it, because I didn't know why the hell would anyone ship Zach and Alex. By the end of the video, I was almost certain that they'll become a couple on the next season. I mean, seriously? Alex couldn't get an erection by kissing Jessica or watching porn, but he got one by fighting half-naked with Zach? After some very suspicious close-ups on the closeness of their hips? And the dance scene speaks for itself. They are alone in the room with a dim light, then Zach pulls Alex up to teach him how to dance in his current state. They touch each other tenderly, their bodies are close, there's a romantic song playing in the background... and they DANCE together. I mean, there's just so much hinting at a romantic development that it would be ridiculous if the romance doesn't happen. It would make all of these scenes simply unnecessary. This is quite different from the Clay/Justin dynamics that I've also seen on a related video. Those two are meant to be funny. There's intimacy between them, a very strong bond of friendship, but there's no intimacy in the same sense as in this dance scene (physical intimacy). So, yeah, that is bromance. This is romance.

*Season 4 Spoiler Alert.* 13 Reasons Why is often pretty "in your face" about stuff, but I actually think that they have been quite subtle with the Zalex stuff, including in Season 4. I don't know if anyone else noticed, but Zach really DOES keep hiding Alex from his Mom. At first glance, it just seems odd. But then you think of how there was one other person he completely hid from his Mom: Hannah Baker. And why did he hide Hannah from his Mom? It was because he had a RELATIONSHIP with her. Some have tried to spin what happens in Season 4's first episode (when Alex kisses Zach and Zach politely says "no thanks") as "a beautiful example of how straight guys can still be really good friends to gay guys even if they get hit on." I beg to differ. The banter that continues through this season, with Alex joking, "If you're hoping to get another kiss from me, then you're going to be disappointed!" and Zach's joking about "picking him up" meaning he's going to pick up Alex and lovingly carry him in his arms, well. . . . Normally straight guys simply wouldn't choose to make such jokes. Just as Winston tells Alex that he waited all night long for Alex to kiss him, I think that deep down inside, the REAL reason Alex was hesitant to be in a relationship with Charlie was that he was still waiting for Zach to kiss him. Everything changed when Zach told Alex to "go find Charlie and make sure he's OK" during the riot at the school. That was Zach's giving Alex the green light to go for it. The sad reality is, Zach probably simply would not have been able to handle a relationship with Alex because the football guys would have wanted them to be the Prom Kings as Charlie and Alex ended up being, and Zach simply would not have been comfortable with such a public relationship. I thought it was so sad that Zach ended up going to prom with a prostitute. I think it showed both his fears of people's thinking he was alone and his fears of a real relationship's being held to public scrutiny. In Season 4, I would argue that Zach may very well be the character who suffers the very most. He has no support at home. He does not see a therapist. And he hides nearly all of his troubles from his friends. He suffers silently, and the only real clue anyone seems to have is his alcoholism and generally reckless behavior. The irony is, more people demonstrate clearly that they care about Clay, but Clay still doesn't believe anyone does. Maybe if Alex had returned the favor and helped Zach with his issues earlier on in this season, then Zalex would have ended up being a thing after all. By the time he did help Zach, he was already comfortably with Charlie. And while Charlie was sweet, I just feel like what happened in the end felt a little "off." Oh, well.

Couldn't have worded it better. Holy shit I totally forgot about him hiding both Hannah and Alex from his mom! I've complained everywhere about how nobody seemed worried about him spiraling into alcoholism. The whole season was so weirdly put together, he was this apathetic drunktard the whole time but he flipped to S2 Zach every time he was with Alex. I don't know it just feels like in the middle of writing the script they decided to change Zach for Charlie and make it a couple. He could have used some psychotherapy just as much as Clay, having his sadness cured after the teacher offered him a job feels like the writers wanted to fill some "there's good adults in this show, not all of them are bad" trope to correct their past mistakes.

The only times anyone really confronted him over it, it was because they were worried about how it would impact Justin. It didn't seem to be truly out of concern for Zach himself. I think many people think an addiction to alcohol is somehow acceptable--perhaps even normal. But it can be just as dangerous as a heroin addiction. As for the coach's helping Zach in the end, this actually didn't surprise me too much, as the coach seemed to be pretty kind to the kids throughout the season. But Zach's having resolved his academic and professional issues does not mean his relationship issues have been resolved. They have not. This show is infamous for not delivering "happy endings." The series finale is no exception. An obviously unhappy ending was Justin's sudden death. A not-so-obvious unhappy ending was that Zach clearly still had feelings for Alex. He simply could not bring himself to follow through with them. The scene where Alex and Charlie talk Zach into going to the hospital to visit Justin proves it. After Alex asks Zach to think back to the night when he kissed Zach and explains to Charlie that the kiss was a disaster, he makes a nice little speech about how it is time for him to make Zach feel safe as Zach did for him that night. And what is Zach's reply? "Actually, that was a nice kiss, per se." Charlie understandably is puzzled by this and asks Zach to confirm it, and Zach confirms that yes, it really was a nice kiss! That was NOT a normal reply--especially in front of Alex's boyfriend. Zach was feeling regret. I truly believe that the character of Zach Dempsey was a bisexual. I think he really DID fall in love with Hannah Baker. Chloe, too. But he also fell in love with Alex. The show has done a lot to promote the acceptance of gay and lesbian relationships. They had a golden opportunity here to address bisexuality, and they threw it all away. Just as society often seems to make bisexuality magically disappear, so has this show. What a shame.

I think they wanted to give Alex a healthy and innocent relationship with somebody less fuck up and Zach was not in a good position. They are both to messed really. It could have been different, I agree and I feel bad for Zach but at least Alex has some sane and healthy love and Zach can pursue his music dream (now he doesn't have football anymore). I don't think the ending is too bad for them. Sometimes writers don't consider your ship, that's all.

I actually think Zach realized about his feelings kinda late. I don't see Alex as a person who falls in love quickly as Winston does, I don't believe he is IN LOVE with Charlie at all. He loves him, yeah, but not that kind of love he actually feels with Zach (a blooming story after all). Alex felt love and went for it because that was what he was looking for for a while. Zach knew he couldn't give him what he deserved because he himself was broken... that's why Zach told Alex "why are you with me and not with Charlie?", who hesitated for a while before running out. It's so sad because if they wanted us to truly believe Zach felt nothing but friendship towards Lex, they could have showed us Zach being the happiest one in the crowd when his best friend and Charlie became prom kings... but they didn't. Instead, they gave us a "the kiss wasn't a disaster, it was a nice kiss perse" of a sad and drunk boy who felt happier when Alex told him he loved him in front of his boyfriend. Instead, they gave us a sad look on Zach's eyes when Charlie hold Alex's hands in Monet's. I mean... I really tried to move on and convince myself that Zach just didn't love Alex that way. But it was impossible after the final episode.
