Whoever lands in San Francisco will hit the jackpot. Not only is it a QB friendly system, but their team is ready and the QB likely won’t be rushed into it. I personally think any of the top 5 would really succeed there.

Nostalgia Junkie Thanks for being so pleasant- I’m sure everyone enjoys that! But QB friendly in terms of using bootlegs and getting the ball out quickly generally to quicker reads in more of a west coast and zone running game hybrid offense built around their physicality. That’s what I’m referring to. Have an awesome day and I hope things get better for you.

@@crackmeup6784 lol worked out for Goff, just throw any old high prospect in a new wave west coast offense, it’ll work out great! Sarcasm aside, I agree that the strategical position the niners are in rn is absolutely ideal for a QB, getting to ride jimmys coattails in the offense during his last dance starting. Hopefully he’s healthy, but I think it’s a bit of an overstatement to call the offense a “qb friendly” system. Having watched all their games the last two seasons, I’m excited to hopefully see their receiving core at full steam and healthy for the first time, aside from the tail end of 2019 when they traded up for sanders, kittle was the only consistent weapon on the team, so many of Jimmy’s interceptions came from dropped and receivers tipping the ball up. Here’s to hoping they draft someone who can throw off platform and execute complex play actions and pick up pre snap reads, but hey what team doesn’t look for that

As a BYU fan that watched every game of Zach's career I can tell you that he definitely has a tendency toward playing hero ball. He would fit well with Bruce Arians because he will always take a deep pass over a short ball. I think when he throws the double teamed post it seems to me like when the over gets slammed by the umpire he immediately come off of that route and throws the deep ball.

Right now if I'm a quarterback needy team. I'm going over Sam Darnold with a fine tooth comb. Darnold has a lot of meat left on the bone. And got a real bad shake in New Jersey. Darnold is just a broken QB right now. His mechanics are bad. He misses open guys (by not seeing them and and physically missing throws). He doesn't read the field well. Honestly he's at his best when a play breaks down and he makes a great play and you go wow this guy has talent. And he does. But he just has no confidence and throws way too many picks. He's more of a project then Wilson or Fields right now. He needs great coaching.
@craigcollins6904
@craigcollins6904 3 жыл бұрын
I agree that it's possible that Darnold's career can be resurrected, but at a minimum, I think he needs a change of scenery and needs to sit for a year. If he doesn't fix his footwork, it won't matter where he goes or who his coach is. He also needs to learn to read Ds and make sound decisions. If he can't do that, he'll be yet another JAG backup, or out of the league within a few years.

Drafting players is just pulling a vision out of a context through which you must filter out the noise. 1. Wilson didn't select his schedule, so that is ZERO KNOCK on him. Those who say otherwise can debate me. 2. He threw the screen pass JT mentioned 0.5 secs too early (lineman about to deflect, so no longer). Seems like Wilson hurried throw (perhaps hand gripped ball too angled). This play has less weight than the pro day throws, IMO. 3. 8:00, like many other plays we see at BYU, is a case of good defensive look (receivers not open, except for a tiny window) and 4. others where Wilson fits a ball in that he should have run with. When he does, it is a strike. OK, COLLEGE players ALWAYS play like they are 20 years old. Even Rodgers. When I rank variables for scout (which I have a decent record doing), the stuff on this video just doesn't stick out as important. When you see Wilson go through reads, he is consistently faster than all QB's in this draft. That counts for more than JT is giving credit, because Fields is quite poor in the same area that JT is hitting in this video.

Some feedback though. Your opinions and lack of awareness of double standards shine through A LOT. I’ve heard you comment about #5 a lot, almost to say that you might believe his play is partially the reason for Wilson’s great play. Why doesn’t Fields or Lawrence get the same treatment with their 5-star weapons, great offensive lines, easy scheme, etc. I think Fields and Lawrence are studs but this is where Simms separates himself from you. He is able to view QB skills and make accurate projections of their play in the NFL. All love on this too, it’s exciting to know that so many people are diving deeper into the game because of you. Thanks again JT for the awesome film review. For me, the thing is, he makes some of the same mistakes as Darnold, but will do so for significantly less money and with seemingly fewer issues to correct. He also lengthens the leash for the coach and GM. As a fan, I also wouldn’t be upset if the Jets traded down to build depth across the whole roster, but his upside is difficult to ignore and it is risky to pass on that when the rest of the roster is ascending and could be ready to compete in his second or third year in the league. I’m just praying that whatever choice Douglas and Saleh make, it’s the right one. Their process seems much more professional and sound than anything the Jets have had in a long, long time. Seeing what you’ve shown here is enlightening

18:48 When he hits the bottom of his drop, look where #2 is as the colour is flashing him in the face. If he sees him in that split second, he looks double covered. I can definitely see how he should avoid, come up in the pocket and hit 2 for a big first down, but to be fair, how many QB's in the NFL are making that read with an unknown of who's got off their blocks properly right behind you. I don't know. It's definitely a good play to look at and try and make a determination on, especially to see if he improves on it later in the year.

@@klipzgod1503 That's fair, but from the time he hits his drop, he's flashed in his face with a free rusher, avoids and hits his checkdown. While he doesn't make the eye popping amazing throw in this individual situation, not a whole lot of QB's are going to be able to avoid the rush like that and at the same time make the perfect read. Not to mention, he comes more open only due to his threat to run there and until after he avoids the rush and starts moving forward, the LB is dropping back. He only gets more open when it's paused because he's already hitting his checkdown so the player is starting to move towards the play. Hey JT, I think 11:11 is actually a super smart play, just unconventional. Sees the safety cheating toward sit route pre-snap, so after he checks and sees slant coming open he fakes toward sit to get safety to bite down. Then, trust receiver to stay open, make throw to slant. 5-7 yard play turns into a 15 yard one. Great breakdown though.

People see glimpses of Mahomes and Rodgers with his arm and ability to make things happen when a play breaks down. However, I think he misses too many reads for me to consider him a top 5 pick/day one starter. I busted out laughing at the "he could punt it to him" on the flea flicker, and it's true. Mahomes and Rodgers let the plays develop and read it before improvising. He is too quick to improvise and has to improve staying within the structure of the offense when time allows.

Also, Houston's DBs coach should hide this video cause there were so many picks and PBUs left out there. He won't be on the board that late, but somewhere like Tampa would be a good first round pick for him. Let him sit behind a veteran for a year or two and then take over when Brady retires just like Mahomes and Rodgers did. Brady is the opposite of improv and Wilson could learn from him on how to stay within the offense a little more and make NFL reads. I think it's a huge risk asking him to be a day one starter on a bad team because he's going to throw a lot of 50/50 balls and miss some plays as well.

It's not that simple. Everyone said the same thing about Baker, Josh Rosen, Johnny Manziel ooh ooh the arm angles ...man, QB in the NFL is not sandlot football. The only reason why Aaron is able to make everything he does look so easy is years and years of studying film knowing nfl defensive coverages so you know where to go with your reads once you spot what look it is. Wilson to me may pan out or he may be just another bust that could've polished his game better under certain sets and styles. However I wouldn't say this is a Manziel or Rosen scenario- Rosen was a pure system QB who really had no right to be drafted that early and was thrust into a god awful O-Line scheme that didn't really fit him. Manziel was a QB who got egotistical in college and didn't attempt to refine his immature aspects of his game- he was bound to fail because he played like a college QB, not an NFL QB. Bakers comparison works though, and I think he will be very similar to Baker. Baker struggled his second year in a crappy O line and played way too risky (like a college QB), but he seems to have found his rhythm in year 3 and hopefully stays that way for year 4. Given time Baker panned out, but struggled early and could've benefited tremendously from sitting for a bit and learning the game (which he obviously did in the 2020 offseason, and he's on the verge of being a top 10 QB). He needs time and hopefully the Jets understand that and give him time by signing a cheap QB to let him sit- or acquire one through the imminent Darnold trade (maybe Teddy, Foles or someone else).

So if Wilson was looking at his read there, he’d see that and could have anticipated the reciever was gonna get behind the inside db and thrown the ball at that point for the big gain. Instead he probably has his eyes on the rush that’s just starting to break free at that point, so he doesn’t see that throw and cant anticipate it. But too often by then they've found the learning curve a big hurdle to overcome and the league has dismissed them as bonafide starters. Some guys it takes longer to 'figure it out' than others, and then there's guys like Darnold that get put in a no win situation and the opportunity to figure it out is thwarted by the team itself. I will say though that the 1-2-1 play earlier in the video looks clever on tape even if it's not technically sound or responsible. Locking the safety inside with his eyes opens his outside receiver to get more of the separation he was clearly exploiting already and turns a short play into a big one. Greedy and maybe purely incorrect/lucky, but there's an argument there for a very advanced and aware play. Would love to see the big talking heads hyping Zach up sit down with guys like you for a few hours and hash out the details though. He kinda sucked last year and came back this year as a top QB because he dedicated the summer to learning how to play. He studied every team (except Coastal Carolina... Don't get me started there) and came into the game with a clear plan. Some of his throws seem like he's already made up his mind on where the ball is going and reads the field a little less because of that planning. I've never really liked how he plays buddy-ball with Dax Milne (#5), but they do have a good connection and the other receivers tend to drop balls a lot.

i was thinking the exact same thing watching his film, but when you stack him up against fields and lance, fields reads the play way too slowly and doesn’t quite move through reads at an NFL level yet which could cause problems with presumably less time in the pocket, and trey lance is a wildly inaccurate passer who is as raw as any QB prospect i’ve seen in recent years to be rated so highly, so comparatively, a QB with as good of ball placement and accuracy as wilson has, with as quick as he’s able to release the ball i would put him firmly in the same breath as fields and definitely above lance, despite him being the exemplification of a “first read” QB. all three prospects i believe can be coached out of their flaws, lance will need a lot more than fields and wilson though

Just remember, while he will be facing NFL db’s, he will also have NFL receivers. I get what your saying about reads, but that can be taught. His athleticism, structure, arm strength and desire can’t. No doubt he’ll work on that with any time that takes him. He has the potential if he’s taken by the right team with the right coach. Maybe I was just getting caught up in the hype, but I thought he became noticeable more consistent with timing and hitting guys in stride during the back half of the season.

You're not off your rocker! You are calling it as you see it & you don't have to apologize for being a nice guy. Everyone has hyped this kid as a prospect including that loon Simms Jr. Yet the tape doesn't lie!!! Against Houston & the rest of BYU's marshmellow schedule??? Yet Fields is dripping with talent & criticized over the Indiana & Northwestern film? I didn't see Wilson pressured into many of these miscues & my drunken uncle could cover better than those corners. Yet the Hoosiers threw the kitchen sink at Fields & their D has players that will be drafted. Don't be fearful of an honest critique sir, it is why I personally trust your learned judgement. Thank you so much for this breakdown JT, it's refreshing to know I'm not alone...

18:50 Technically, it's not 1 to 2. That RB swing is his 4th or 5th option. Probably 4th since TE#83 motions to max protect.

I don't know if you have done the bowl game, I have looked at a few of your other videos, but I feel like that was probably Zach's best game this year. This Houston one was probably one of his worst, especially that first half. As far as your analysis, I think you are correct. Zach has struggled with these issues his whole career at BYU. He doesn't make quick reads and is sometimes inconsistent with his ball placement. However, he has significantly improved these things as well. So I think he can get better. I am a little surprised at his placement in the draft, but as a BYU fan its very exciting. But again I think you are correct with his issues. I believe he has the arm talent, but he needs to do some more maturing in his reads and consistency.

Okay, this is the fourth analysis you've done of him. He's had games that you've watched that are just nuts on how well he reads the defense and chucks the ball. This is a bad day for him. Most people want a bad day as bad as this.

I think the 4th and 1 play was nitpicky, but other than that these criticisms were on point and fully warranted. Def stuff teams like the Jets and niners are going to have to consider. 4th and 1 play: he’s doing a funky fake botched snap, he moves through his progressions like you want to see him do there, and then with 3 defenders barreling in on him he’s ever so slightly off on his placement. So I’m not gonna fault him too hard there. Yea it would have been nice if he placed the ball 1 yard further down the field for the TD. But with the unusual nature of the fake and 3 guys in his face, I’m not going to fault him too hard for being a yard short on the throw.

you mention his Mahomes like drifty-ness and pop on the throw. i'd be willing to bet mr wilson played baseball growing up. it's a similar motion to fielding a grounder and cocking your hips as you run or lining up a fly ball to pick off an advancing runner

Here's my thing, if you went back to the 1979 Cotton Bowl and dissected every single throw Joe Montana made against Houston (albeit in frigid conditions), but take any of his best college games as well, you'd see missed reads, underthrown balls, overthrown balls, etc., because even the greatest players are human. I do appreciate the analysis for sure JT, and yours is a great one to watch because you played the position, and in my opinion played it well in your short stint with my Niners, but I also think sometimes our over analyzing can blind us a bit of how gifted this guy is. He isn't perfect, no one is, Brady coming out of college sure wasn't, and I'd argue that he wasn't HALF as talented as this kid. He was a very accurate passer at Michigan, and his arm was CLEARLY underrated, but he would get sacked on several plays that Zach can scramble on for 15-20 yards, or make a play with his arm. All that to say, he's not the player today that he will be if given the right environment and NFL level talent around him, but trust your eyes when you see him show several examples of elite level throws, because not many before him or currently can make those plays

The thing about Wilson it looks like he's reached his peek unlike, say, Josh Allen coming out of college who still doesn't look like he's reach his peek. It would still be hard to pass on him if I were the Jets.

As a Jets fan, for me it's always been Fields at #2. Wilson is definitely my QB3 just because the high's can be so high, but I'm just concerned he is significantly more talented than the players he came up against and he took full advantage of that. If it were the Jets picking #3 I'd have to be pretty happy about all the noise of Wilson jumping Fields to go #2 as I think that is a flat out wrong assessment of these two players. Think Justin Fields is getting nit picked to death by the media, they only focus on his flaws, but Wilson receives heaps of praise and minimal talk about his flaws.

@JT as a Jets fan you’re breaking my heart bro. I agree with you on 95% though. @ around the 11:00 mark, I think he made the right play. It seems like he’d have to throw a super bullet to get it over the top of his G(?) and passed that LB. So, how much of this can be cleaned up through coaching? Or is that more of a “we’ll see” situation? I appreciate it this!! I’ll go to you before all these other dudes in KZbin world for a real analysis. The other guys are good but yours is the real deal.

For what it's worth, I think this video is mainly a response to people anointing Zach QB1 or QB2 off hype alone. This is still a good vid for whatever fan base gets him, just set realistic expectations. I really like Zach, have been saying he has the best pure arm talent in this draft for months. Now people are going overboard comparing him to Mahomes and Rodgers, who showed less flaws as prospects (they had mainly mechanical issues not as many errors or blind moments as Zach has). I like Tlaw and Fields better than Zach, but he's still a great prospect worthy of a top 5 pick. I think Fields could still be the pick at 2, Jets haven't leaked any of their moves in the Joe D era, so I think Wilson at 2 is still speculation (based on DJ) just like Mac Jones at 3 (based on Simms) its all pure speculation at this point.

I’m very curious in your analysis why you say he can’t attempt these jump balls vs. NFL cornerbacks without acknowledging that Mims and Davis are both bigger the their cornerback counterparts at 6’3” 215 and considered excellent at 50/50 balls? Aren’t 50/50 balls commonplace in the NFL? How come only cornerbacks are included in this analysis?
