Another major factor to consider that is not really included in the software calculations is one spouse dying years before the other, putting the surviving spouse in a much higher tax bracket. This risk alone makes completing conversions earlier than later a very smart idea in my opinion. Not only are you going to pay more income tax as a single filer, but you could end up paying more IRMAA penalties and a higher percentage of your SS payments could be subject to taxation as well.

Boldin does account for this if you input it into the life expectancy for each spouse, you can make a copy of your main plan, and then adjust the new scenario as an early death. Boldin will show how much RMDs and taxes will apply to the one surviving spouse. I agree that getting it done earlier is generally better!
